VICE-CHANCELLOR’S WELCOME
As President and Vice-Chancellor of UNSW I take great pride in our achievements, particularly our status as one of the top 100 universities in the world, and Australia’s premier university focused on science, technology, business and the professions.
Our modern and cosmopolitan campus sees
staff and students from 120 different countries
come together to pursue their academic
passions and to tackle some of the world’s
great challenges. Through research, we are
making a difference in areas such as climate
change and lifesaving HIV treatments. We are
also developing innovative new technologies,
including ultra-powerful quantum computers
that will transform the way we work, and the
groundbreaking bionic eye which has the
potential to give back sight to thousands.
This is a particularly exciting time to study at
UNSW. The Tyree Energy Technologies Building
is our new home for energy research and we
have recently completed the Wallace Wurth
redevelopment, housing state-of-the-art research
and medical teaching facilities. Our Art & Design
faculty has undergone an AUD$58 million facelift,
cementing its reputation as Australia’s leading
school of art, design and digital media. We
have also expanded our on-campus student
accommodation with the Kensington Colleges
and the University Terraces.
As part of the UNSW family, UNSW Foundation
Studies is celebrating more than 25 years as
Australia’s leading provider of pre-university
programs. Our programs provide an excellent
preparation for university study as well as a
university entry qualification. These programs
help international students from a wide variety
of educational backgrounds to meet the
challenging academic entry standards of UNSW
and to develop the study, language and cultural
skills needed to succeed at university in Australia.
By choosing UNSW you will be joining the
brightest and best students from Australia
and abroad. Surveys show their success
in their chosen careers, with our graduates
consistently earning among the highest starting
salaries. UNSW has educated more CEOs from
Australia’s top 50 companies, produced more
technology entrepreneurs in the past 15 years
and has a higher number of millionaire alumni
that any other Australian university. So you know
you will be joining a talented and highly driven
student community.
I wish you well with your journey ahead and
look forward to welcoming you to UNSW in
the near future.

LIVING IN SYDNEYSydney is Australia’s largest and most dynamic city. It is an exciting and ever-changing urban centre. Sydney is vibrant and cosmopolitan with a diverse and unique lifestyle. Importantly, Sydney is considered to be safe, clean and green.
A city of the worldLocated on the south-east coast of Australia,
Sydney is the gateway to Australia and
home to over four million people. Sydney
is also one of the world’s most multicultural
cities, where you can experience the food,
entertainment and customs of the world.
Australians are very accepting of other
cultures, and over 50% of Sydney residents
today were born outside Australia or have
at least one parent born overseas.
Sydney’s energetic lifestyleSydney hosts many major cultural and sporting
events, thousands of eateries and restaurants
from many different cultures, excellent shopping
options and an exciting and diverse nightlife.
Lively weekend markets are a feature of areas
such as the famous Rocks district, Paddington,
Balmain and Chinatown. They provide a
cheaper shopping alternative to the wide range
of department stores and designer outlets.
Our warm and sunny climate is perfect for a
healthy outdoor lifestyle. People enjoy a range
of activities including cycling, swimming and
surfing. The city centre is beside Sydney
Harbour and features landmarks such as the
Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Royal Botanic
Gardens and the world famous Sydney Opera
House. The city is surrounded by beautiful
sandy beaches, national parks and mountain
ranges suitable for bushwalking, hiking and
camping all year round.
Making the most of Sydney’s climateThere are four seasons in Sydney. Summer
is from December to February, autumn from
March to May, winter from June to August, and
spring from September to November. January
and February are the hottest months in Sydney.
Sydney’s winters are generally mild.
Part-time and vacation workAs an international student, Australian
immigration regulations allow you to work up
to 40 hours per fortnight during semester,
and full time during university vacations. It is
important to note that you are not permitted to
work until you have commenced your studies.
There are many ways to find casual and
part-time work. Look in local newspapers,
ask your friends, or enquire at the University
Careers and Employment Office. You can also
look online at www.careers.unsw.edu.au or other

Danyan Zhao (China)
Completed UFS Transition Program – Commerce Stream (2012).
Currently studying UNSW Bachelor of Actuarial Studies.
Danyan is a confident and well spoken student
regarded by her teachers as a high-achiever
who went out of her way to learn as much
as she could. She is currently in her 2nd year
at UNSW, studying one of the most challenging
courses at the University – the Bachelor of
Actuarial Studies.
Danyan achieved good grades in the Gaokao
Examination and was offered direct entry into a
Bachelor course at another Go8 university with
a condition to complete an Academic English
program. Instead, she decided to study at
UNSW Foundation Studies (UFS), believing the
Transition Program would provide her with a
stronger background for her future studies:
“I had never learnt any business subjects in
China and I felt that completing an Academic
English course alone would not be as helpful
as the Transition Program. In the Transition
Program I could spend a similar amount of
time studying relevant subjects like Economics,
Business Law and Maths, which are vital for
me to do well in my degree.”
Danyan was very impressed with the
quality of teaching at UFS: “The University
style teaching at UFS helped me to adjust
from the Chinese to the Australian education
system. The UFS teachers were always patient
and helpful... the knowledge I have learnt
in UFS was very practical and related to my
first year of university so I did not find my
first year as difficult.”
“I really appreciate the staff at UFS, who
had helped me grow and learn. It was
such a rewarding experience that I am
still benefiting from today.”
Danyan completed the Transition Program Commerce Stream at UNSW Foundation Studies and scored an outstanding GPA of 9.6 out of 10.
Daniel Tsang (Hong Kong)
Completed UFS Transition Program – Commerce Stream (2012).
Daniel showed early entrepreneurial qualities
prior to arriving in Sydney to study at UNSW
Foundation Studies. In 2008, he started
writing a blog about aviation, now known
as Aspire Aviation.
He talks about why he came overseas to study
and his experience. ‘My parents encouraged
me to live independently and broaden my
horizons. I chose to study here as Australia is a
safe country and it’s closer to Hong Kong than
the United States. I realise now how the culture
in Hong Kong is very competitive and people
keep things close to their chest. Studying
here people are friendly and we share and
learn together. I benefited from the Transition
program with the consistent academic structure
and study style similar to UNSW. I’ve adapted
quickly to university life as we had lectures
on campus as well as having built close
friendships. Even now, my UNSW Foundation
Studies classmates are my best friends.’
Currently in his second year at UNSW, Daniel says
‘I’m having a very good time taking a Finance and
Economics double-major, although I find Finance
challenging, I’m obsessed with Economics!’ In
addition to his studies, Daniel keeps his eyes
on the skies, having been featured on an ABC
News story Airlines struggle in highly crowded
market and is extensively quoted in many media
publications including The Wall Street Journal,
Bloomberg Businessweek and Forbes. He even
managed to fit in a trip back to Hong Kong to attend
Cathay Pacific’s private gathering where he met its
new CEO, Ivan Chu, who is a fellow UNSW alumnus.
With one year remaining in his degree, he plans
to study an honors year in economics before
getting firsthand experience in an Australian
airline to see how things work internally.
Although passionate about aviation, Daniel
remains open about the future. He has
considered the idea of expanding his skills
and knowledge to other industries such as
retail. ‘Never say never. I think it is important
to be open-minded. I have still a long way to
go to improve and want to embrace all the
opportunities of the world.’
Daniel is currently at UNSW studying Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in Finance and Economics, and is the Founder & Chief Analyst of Aspire Aviation.

Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia including students who have completed an Australian Year 12 Certificate, are eligible to apply for all UNSW Foundation Studies programs.
Cost of UNSW Foundation Studies for Australian Students
All students entering UNSW Foundation
Studies programs pay the same fees whether
they are international students, Australian
citizens or Australian permanent residents.
Entry into UNSW Undergraduate Programs
is via Commonwealth Supported Places.
Australian citizens or Australian permanent
residents enrolled in UNSW Foundation Studies
may apply for a Commonwealth Supported
place at UNSW.
The grades required for Commonwealth
Supported places in undergraduate programs
are determined by the Universities Admissions
Centre (UAC) at the time of each intake, and
are dependent on the availability of places and
the demand for them. If you are completing
UNSW Foundation Studies, and are seeking
a Commonwealth Supported place, you will
need to achieve high grades, equivalent to
other Australian students. The requisite
grades are often higher than those required
for international students.
Progressing to UniversityCommonwealth places for Semester 2 (July)
entry are limited. We encourage Australian
citizens and permanent residents to enrol in
a UNSW Foundation Studies program which
concludes in time for these students to enter
Semester 1 at university.
Applying to Other UniversitiesStaff will provide you with advice if you
apply to UNSW and other universities, but it
should be noted, that some universities may
not offer places to Australian citizens or
permanent residents who have studied in
foundation programs.
Cost of University Degree For Commonwealth supported places you can
either pay your contributions up-front or defer
them and pay them later through the tax system
HECS-HELP.
For further details please refer to the
UNSW website: www.unsw.edu.au. Click
on ‘Future Students’ and follow the links.
CITIZENS AND RESIDENTS
UNSW Foundation Studies qualifications are recognised by many universities in Australia and overseas.
Starting Your University DegreeTowards the end of the UNSW Foundation
Studies program, student advisers arrange
a Faculty Information Day and seminars.
At these events students receive first-hand
information about the many undergraduate
programs the university offers, and are able
to talk directly to the representatives of the
different faculties and UNSW students who are
studying UNSW degree programs. Our student
advisers and teachers are available to discuss
preferences with students before university
placement is made. Students can choose
up to 6 preferences.
Once the final UNSW Foundation Studies
results are released, they are forwarded
to UNSW Admissions who issue offers
to students.
Undergraduate Entry UNSW Foundation Studies has programs for
university entry into Semester 1 (March) and
also mid-year entry into Semester 2 (July).
Main university entry is Semester 1, though
many university programs also offer entry in
Semester 2. See the list of programs on pages
22-25; programs offered for mid-year Semester
2 (July) entry are shown with +.

A PARENT PERSPECTIVE
When it came to their tertiary education,
the decisions were much harder.
I believe my children are modern. They are
a part of a dynamic generation who reflect
the new social and business values that are
becoming increasingly visible in Myanmar. I
also want my children to be aware of their
cultural heritage. As a family, we discuss these
traditional values and Buddhist beliefs, but the
importance of an international education was
still paramount to their future. I realised I would
need to send my children overseas for their
university education.
When selecting a country, I wanted to be able
to see them during semester breaks. I looked
at living costs, standard of accommodation,
safety and my overall peace of mind once I was
separated from them. I’m sure such worries are
familiar to anyone who is a parent.
As I investigated options, I discovered that
Australia was close to home, safe, welcoming,
offered a good lifestyle and had many
outstanding universities. I also realised that
a pathway program, which provided a good
academic introduction and local classroom
experience, was going to be essential if my
children were to succeed.
After considering all the options, I chose the UNSW
Foundation Studies program in Sydney. Not only
did the range of subjects and teaching standards
appeal, but the guaranteed place in a degree
course at UNSW (Australia) meant I wouldn’t
have to move my children to another university.
My eldest son is currently enrolled in the UNSW
Foundation Studies course. My two daughters
have successfully graduated from UNSW
and are now back home working in the family
business. They tell wonderful stories of their
friends, the class activities, the great teachers,
Vegemite, events on campus, good restaurants
and Sydney’s beaches.
My youngest son, who is 11, is so excited.
He’s already looking forward to studying at
UNSW and can’t wait to go to Sydney and
experience it all for himself.
Dr Mya Thidar Sway Tin
Myanmar
I have four beautiful children and early on, my husband and I made a promise that we would provide them with the best possible education that we could afford. We sent all our children to an international school in Myanmar, which gave them a great start in life.
