WhyDoWeCelebrateHolyCommunionEveryWeek?SeveralweeksagoIwasaskedwhywecelebratecommunioneveryweekatFirstTrinity.Aneasyanswerwouldbe,thathasbeenpartofourtra-ditionforthelast40years.SomeofyoumightcomebackatmeandsaythechurchIgrewupin

celebratescommuniononceamonthandtheyhavebeenfollow-ingthesamepracticeforoverseventy iveyearsandmore.Soiscommunityfrequencytheresultoftraditionorsomethingdeeperthanthat?NowhereintheBibleareinstructionsonhowoftenweshouldtakecommunion.1Corinthians11:24-26recordsthefollowinginstructionsforcommunion:“…theLordJesusinthenightinwhichhewasbetrayedtookbread;andgivingthanks,Hebrokeitandsaid,‘Take,eat;thisisMybody,whichisbrokenforyou;thisdoinremembranceofMe.’InthesamewayHetookthecupalso,aftersupping,saying,‘ThiscupistheNewCovenantinMyblood;asoftenasyoudrinkit,dothisinremembranceofMe.’For‘asof-tenasyoueatthisbreadanddrinkthiscup,youshow’theLord'sdeathuntilHeshallcome.”Thispassagegivesalltheinstructionsweneedtoperformtheriteofcommunionandtounderstandthesigni icanceofwhatwearedoing.ThebreadwhichJesusbrokeisHisbodywhichwasbrokenonthecrossforus.ThecupisHisbloodHeshedonourbehalf,sealingacovenantbetweenHimandus.Eachtimeweperformthe

communionritual,wearenotonlyrememberingwhatHedidforus,butweare“showing”itaswelltoallwhowatchandallwhoparticipate.Thisisabeautifulandgraphicpictureofwhathap-penedatthecross,whatitmeans,andhowitimpactsourlivesasbelievers.Itwouldseem,then,thatsincewetaketheLord’sSuppertore-memberChrist’sdeath,weshouldtakeitfairlyoften.SomechurcheshaveamonthlyLord’sSupperservice,othersdoitbi-monthly,othersweekly.SincetheBibledoesnotgiveusspeci icinstructionastofrequency,thereissomelatitudeinhowoftenachurchshouldobservetheLord’sSupper.Itisnotthefrequencythatmatters,buttheheartattitudeofthosewhoparticipate.WecelebrateHolyCommunionweeklyhereatFirstTrinity,andatsomeweddingsandfunerals,toagainremindourselvesofwhatJesusdidforusonthecross.TheArchBishopMacariusNotaraswrotethisinthe18century.“ToreceiveCommuniontheusualtwoorthreetimesayearisgoodandhelpful,buttoreceiveCommunionmorefrequentlyisfarbetter.Remember,thenearerapersoncomestothelight,themorelighthegets.Thecloserhedrawstothe ire,thewarmerheis.Thenearerheapproachessanctity,themoresaintlyhebecomes.Inthesameway,themoreoftenonedrawsneartoGodinCommun-ion,themoreonereceiveslightandwarmthandholi-ness.”Ialwaysinditfascinatinghowsomethingswrittenhundredsofyearsagoarestillveryrelevantandtimelytoday.PastorTomKnoll

“God’swork.Ourhands.”Sundayisanopportunitytocelebrateour25thanniversaryastheEvangelicalLutheranChurchinAmerica(ELCA)–onechurch,freedinChristtoserveandloveourneighbor.Weareachurchthatrollsupoursleevesandgetstowork.OnSept.8,2013,wewilljointogetheras4millionmembers,nearly10,000congregations,65synodsandthechurchwideexpressionforonededicateddayofservice.Theideaisthis:ELCAmembersarecalledtoputtheirfaithintoactionbyengaginginserviceactivityintheirneighbor-hood,surroundingcommunityordesignatedarea.The25thAnniversarythemecomesfrom2Corinthians5:17:“SoifanyoneisinChrist,thereisanewcreation:everythingoldhaspassedaway;seeeverythinghasbecomenew!”OurcelebrationatFirstTrinityandStMatthew’swillprovideanumberofdifferentwaysthatyoucanparticipate.Firstthings irst.Wewillworshiptogetheratourusual10:30amtimeandbedismissedby11:30.Thenwewillgotoourservice

FirstTrinityandHoneyBeesDidyouknowthatthereare4,000speciesofbeesintheworld,oneofthembeingthehoneybee?Beesprovideanunbelievableecosystem,pollination,to80%of loweringplants,and75%ofthefruits,nuts,andvegetablesgrowninthiscountry.Beesareef icientforagers.Oneexampleistheblueberrybee,Os‐miaribo loris,ahardworkinglittlecreaturecapableofvisitingasmanyas50,000blueberry lowersinhershortlifeandpollinat-ingenoughofthemtoproducemorethan6,000ripeblueberries.Atmarket,there6,000blueberriesareworthapproximately$20ormore.Noteverybeethatyousee littingaboutmaybeworth$20,butallofthemcombinedkeeptheworldof loweringplantsgoing.Theworldasweknowitwouldnotexistiftherewerenobeestopollinatretheearth’s250,000 loweringplants.Tohelpourcitygrowitsplantsandtrees,FirstTrinityisstartingahoneybeehiveontheroofofthechurch.Ifyouareinterested,our irstorganizingmeetingwillbeonSunday,September15,justbeforesomeofusgoofftotheNatsgame.Anyoneiswel-cometojoinus.

onthelovelyhomespuncaricaturedevelopedbyGarrisonKeillorinPrairieHomeCompanionandLakeWobegonandallthat.WeoftenhaveparodiesofourselveswherewesaythatallwedoiseatdifferentkindsofJell-Oandgreen-beancasserole.Thatisnolongertrueaboutus.OurgrowingedgesinthischurchareAfri-cannationalcongregationsandLatinocongregations,whichisbringingawholenewwonderful lavortotheLutheranpotluck,theologicallyandculturally.WhatdoestheelectionofawomanmeanfortheELCAandforthebroaderChristiancommunityinAmerica?

Peopletellmethattheythinkitisprettytremendous;Ican’t ig-ureitout—itisjustme,forheaven’ssake.Ourcurrentpresidingbishop,MarkHanson,hasreallyfor12yearstriedtohaveourchurchembodyfullinclusionofallpeople,thatthereisnotjustonebodytypeforLutheranism.Ithinkwhenwearrivedatthispoint,thisweekwastheculminationofhisworkofsaying,“Yes,everyonehasgiftstoserve.”Sothatformewouldbeoneofthemostimportantthingsthathashappened.Whenwesayevery-oneiswelcomeandthatGod’sgiftshavebeenpouredoutoneve-ryone,asitsaysinJoel,thatitcanalsobepouredoutonsome-onewhohappenstobefemalefromOhio.WhatarethebiggestchallengesfacingtheELCAtoday?

LikeallChristiandenominationsinthiscountry,allofusaresee-ingeitheradeclineoraplateauing[ofmembership],soIthinktheincreasingsecularizationiskindofashockforalotofourfolks.Wenolongerhaveaplaceofprivilegeintheculture.I’moldenoughtorememberpublic-serviceannouncementsfromPresidentEisenhowertellingusalltogotothechurchorsyna-gogueofourchoice.Thosedaysareover.Theworldhaschanged.Imean,storesusedtobeclosedonSundays—canyouimagine?ThiswasbeforetherewassoccerinAmerica.Nowallofthatisgone.Sohowcanwereadjustandre-engageasmissionariesagain?Wehaveto igurethisout.Itisentirelypossible.TheRo-manEmpirewasnotsayingtoChristians,“Oh,sure,takeSundayoff,”those irstfewcenturies.Sonothavingaprivilegeplaceinsociety,thatmightbegoodforus.

Yousupportthedecisiontoallowpartneredgayclergy,butyoualsobelievethatthechurchshouldmakeroomforpeo‐plewhodon’t.Why?

Lutheranshaveahistoryoflivingwithparadox.Therearesomethingsthatarenonnegotiableforus.ButthereareotherthingsthatitispossibleforpeoplewholoveJesusholdingthesamefaithtogether,canhaveverystrong,verysharpdisagreements,butitdoesnothavetoleadtodisunity.Thingslikemarriageortheorderingofgovernmentorcertainpoliticalpositions,wecanandwedodisagree,butweagreeonthecross.WewanttobeaplacethatsayswecandisagreeonthingsthatarevitallyimportantbutstilllistentoeachotherandseeintheotherabrotherorsisterinChrist,andmoreimportantly,some-oneforwhomChristdied.Ihearyouhaveaspiritualdirector.Whatisyourprocessofspiritualdirection,andhowhasitshapedyou?

Therearepeoplenowwhoarespiritualandnotreligious.Iwouldcharacterizemyselfasreligiousbutnotspiritual.Iamafaithfulperson,buttakingacloserlookatmyrelationshipwithGodinamoreintentionalwaywassomethingthatgavemethewilliessometimes.SoIthought,Bygolly,ifIreallybelievewhatIpreach,thenIcan’tdothisonmyown.IfeveryoneofusdependsutterlyonGod,maybeIneedtostart indingawaytohaveadis-cussionaboutthatwithGod,andIthought,Imightneedsome-onetohelpmedialintotheGodfrequency.Inoursynodwehavesevenspiritualdirectorswhoarespeciallytrainedandcerti iedfortheirparticularministry,soIcontactedoneofthewomenandshesaid,“O.K.Iwanttobeclear:Iamnotapsychologist,Iamnotatherapist,allIamissomeonewhocanbeyourcompanionwhileyouarehavingyourconversationwithGod,andIwilleavesdroponyourconversationandhelpyoutostayhonestinthat.”Wehavebeendoingthatforthepastyearorso,andithasmadeahugedifference.

SaintPaul,MartinLuther,WalterBrueggemann.SaintPaul—whosoundstomenotlikeoneofthosepeopleI’dliketohangoutwithverymuch,hesoundslikeoneofthosereal-lyintenseoverachievers—he inallyrealizedthatunderhisownsteamhecouldn’tdoit.Thathasbeenathemeformeoverthepastyearandahalf,tryingtopowerthroughundermyownsteamandrealizingthatthatissilly.IfwebelieveandtrustinGodthenthatisalwaysavailabletous,sojustlettinggo.Pauldoesthatinsentenceswithnopunctuationthatgoonforpara-graphs,butthatisaroughcalculationofhisjusti icationbygracethroughfaith.MartinLuther—wonderful,earthy.Iobviouslythinkhegotalotofthingsrightinhelpingtomakesomeofthethemesoftheologyaccessibletoalotofpeople,particularlyifyoureadhisSmallCatechism,ifyoutakealookathisexplanationofthefourthpeti-tionoftheLord’sPrayer,“Giveusthisdayourdailybread,”whenhetalksnotjustaboutfood,butagoodgovernmentandagoodnameandhavingemployment.AndBrueggemannjustsocapturesthemajestyofGodbutalwaysinthesensethatGodisalwaysopeningpossibilities.WhatpassagesofScripturehavemeantthemosttoyou?
