� Cuttings normally don’t need to be removed with a scoop on a 25 –30m raise, provided:
• The cuttings can be washed away from the drill after every rod.
• Access to the drill can be maintained so that the drill can easily be moved once the hole has been completed.
� If access to the front of the drill is available with a scoop, we do like to remove the cuttings periodically.

� Primary slots can be developed using Machines Rogers’ V-30 boring head and a conventional ITH drill.

� Setting up the ITH drill in the stope in preparation for V-30 drilling does not require any special installation such as concrete pad or slashing the back.
� An experienced ITH driller will readily learn and master V-30 drilling.
� Training the local personnel can be achieved easily in relatively short time frame.
� In addition to developing the slots, the ITH drill can be used for all other drilling requirements such as:� Production drilling� Service hole drilling� Paste fill hole drilling
Advantages of utilising the V-30 boring head for slot
development
� Assurance that the slot will be successful ,with low risk of failure ,such as associated with conventionally blasted slots
� Ease of use and operator training relatively simple.
� Ability to use the ITH drill to accomplish other drilling requirements; production & service hole drilling.
� Speed by which the primary slots can be developed in comparison to other methods.
� Equipment setup and moving without special installations such as required for Raise Boring (concrete base) or Alimaks.
� Capacity to develop blind slots (drilling up) without the requirement for an upper level.

Slot development using Alimak method
• The development of slot raises using the Alimakmethod requires specialised equipment and an experienced labor force.

• Miners experienced in Alimak mining are difficult to find and/or train and require:
• Specialised training with Alimak installation.
• Experience using ‘Stopper’ drills.
• Experience in raise blasting.
• Completing a typical 2,0M x 2,0M, 25 meter length slot can require 20– 22 shifts depending on the type of installation chosen.
Slot development using a conventional Raise Bore
• Slot development using a conventional raise boring machine involves sophisticated equipment requiring a specialised labour force.
• Raise bore machines are normally operated by a mining contractor with highly trained raise bore operators.
• Training a proficient raise bore operator is a lengthy process..
• Training the local work force on the use of this type of equipment is a long a repetitious
• The equipment is expensive and will be uniquely dedicated to the slot development. This equipment will not be used for other drilling requirements such as; production drilling.
• This type of equipment does not typically have the capacity of drilling blind up holes.
Slot development using a conventional Raise Bore
• Development of a typical 1,8M x 1,8M, 25 meter in length slot using a 42’’ reamer can require 10 –12 shifts:
• Site preparation, installation of concrete base and equipment installation: 3 shifts.
• Drilling pilot hole and installing reamer head: 1 shift.
• Reaming to 42 inches: 3 shifts.• Drilling 4 ½’’ holes: 2 shifts.• Blasting: 2 shifts.• Demobilisation: 1 shift.
SLOT DEVELOPMENT USINGCONVENTIONAL DRILLING AND BLASTING
• The development of a primary slot using this method requires an experienced labour force.
• The success of a slot using this method will first of all be driven by the accuracy of drilling.
• This method requires attentive drillers and the right choice of drilling equipment.
• If slots are longer than 15 meters serious consideration should be given to choosing an ITH drill.
• Hole deviation of more than 3% will increase the possibility of failure.
• Blasting the slot using this method will require an experienced blasting team.
• Blasting a slot is not an exact science, and the blaster will have to adjust his method and bring required changes after each blast.

SLOT DEVELOPMENT USINGCONVENTIONAL DRILLING AND BLASTING
• A typical 1,8M x 1,8M, 25 meter slot will require 8 to 10 blasts, depending on the proficiency of the blaster.
• The total slot development will re quire 13 – 15 shifts, provided no major problems are encountered.
• A missed blast will require specific and detailed operating procedures in order to attempts to recover the slot.
• Standard operating procedures will need to be developed in order to minimise the recovery risk.
• When explosives remnants are suspected to be present, all drillngrequired to recover the slot will have to be carried out with remote drilling.
• In certain situations, a failed slot will have to be abandoned and re-drilled at another location.
