BuildingsCompetitionTwentyoutstandingbuildingshavebeenselected for theWoodAwards2016shortlist, featuringsomeofBritain’sbestarchitecturaldesignsinwood.LedbyarchitectMichaelMorrisonofPurcell,thejudgesreviewedapplicationsinavarietyofcategoriesincluding:Commercial&Leisure,Education&PublicSector,Interiors,PrivateandSmallProjects.Theshortlistwillbeshowcasedat100%DesignstandL620,21st-24thSeptemberatLondonOlympia.ThewinnerswillberevealedbyhostGrantGibson,editorofCraftsmagazine,atthe45thannualWoodAwardsceremonyatCarpenters’Hallon22ndNovember.Established in1971,theWoodAwards istheUK’spremiercompetitionforexcellence inarchitectureandproductdesignintheworld’sonlynaturallysustainablematerial.TheAwardsaimtorecognise,encourageandpromoteoutstandingdesign,craftsmanshipandinstallationusingwood.MichaelMorrisoncomments,“Ithasbeenanotherexcellentyearforentries.Thevarietyofsubmissionshas,asever,beenterrific.Attheshortlistingtherearealwaysanumberofprojectsthatgetalotofvotes,whichmakes themeasy to select. LocatedatthethresholdbetweentheresidentialandcommercialzonesofemergingAlconburyWeald,three-storeyAlconburyWealdClubsitsbeneathtwoexaggeratedroofcanopiesthatcreateshelteredcommunityspaces.Thebuilding’sstructureiscross-laminatedtimber(CLT),usingasystemof4.5to6mwidestructuralbays. The vertical order of curtain wall glazing and dark-stained timber cladding echo the neighbouringAlconburyIncubatorbuilding.However,thetimbercladdingrunsvertically,inaslip-and-missarrangementakintoaScandinaviansummerhouse.ThebuildingaccommodatestheofficesofUrban&Civic,apubliccafé,ameetinghallandagymbutitsgenerousvolumesandexposedfinishesmeanthatitisabletoadapttonewusesasthecommunitycontinuestogrow.

SituatedintheCotswoldcountryside,GloucesterServicesconsistsoftwomainretailfacilitiesandtwopetrolstations.The£45mprojecthasnofranchisedbrands.Instead,locallysourced,homemadefoodisproducedinitskitchensattheheartofthebuildingsandinlocalfarmshops.TheprojectisthebrainchildoftheDunningfamily,foundersofWestmorlandLtd,whoopenedtheirfirstMotorwayServiceAreainCumbriain1972whentheM6wasbuiltthroughtheirhillfarm.Theirfarmingbackgroundinspiredthebarn-likeenvironmentoftheproject.Thebuildingsblendwiththeenvironmentwithverylittleimpactontheimmediatelandscapeandlong-distanceviews.Excavatedmaterialsfromtheconstructionsitewerere-usedinthelandscaping,whichalongwiththebuildingitself,actasabarriertomotorwaysound.Internallytheglu-lamroofisleftexposedandtheretainingwallsaredressedinCotswolddrystone.3. Sky commissioned dRMM to design a purpose built staff amenity building as a demonstration of theircommitment to the health and well-being of their staff. Positioned opposite a large landscaped plaza(currentlyunderconstruction)thebuildingtakesadvantageoftheviewacrossthislandscapeandtowardsBoston Manor beyond. dRMM collaborated closely with Arup in the design of the building, carefullycomposingauniquestructuralarrangementofglu-lambifurcatedtimberandbeams,containedwithinCLTperimeterwallsandfloors.Internallyallthestructuraltimberisleftexposedwhichaddsarichnessoftextureandsculpturalform.Theprojectwasdesignedanddeliveredinjust17monthswiththesuperstructureonlytaking26daystoerect.4. TheGradeIlistedWestonbirtArboretumishometooneofthefinesttreecollectionsintheworld.TheStihlTreetopWalkwayprovidesviewsoverthislandscape,inparticulartheancientwoodlandsofSilkWoodandacrossTheDowns.Atalmost300mitisthelongeststructureofitskindintheUK.Thewalkwaybridgesacrossa valley, allowing for ease of access at ground level without any stairs or lifts.While walking along thestructurethevalleyfallsawaybeneathandthewalkwayrisestoover13.5mabovetheforestfloor.Theroutesnakesaboveandthroughthetreecanopysupportedbyscissoringtimberlegsspacedat10.5mintervals.Atfourpoints along the route itwidens from1.9m to3.7m,providing spaces forpauseand reflection. Thewalkwayisahybridtimberandsteelstructure.Larchwasselectedastheprincipalmaterialgivenitsdurabilityandattractivecolour.ScottishlarchwasselectedforthedeckingandhandrailwhilethecolumnsareSiberianlarchasitoffersatightergrainandhigherstrength-to-weightratio.5. TheWelcomeCentreprovidesnewvisitorfacilitiesattheentrancetothehistoricestateofMottisfontAbbey.Thebuildings,locatedbetweentheexistingcarparkandatributaryoftheRiverTest,includeavisitorarrivalandticketingspace,ashop,anofficeandastaffroom.Duetobeingpositionedinthefloodplain,thebuildingsareraisedoffthegroundandarrangedaroundaraisedcourtyardthatconnectstoanewwalkway,bridgeand to landscaped paths beyond. With bold, clear, reductive detailing, the buildings are contemporaryinterpretationsofsimpleagriculturalforms.TheprojectwasdesignedtobehighlysustainablewithminimalimpacttothesensitiveSSSIsurroundings.Thespruceandlarchframeandfloorcassetteswereprefabricated.Thedistinctivedia-gridframeworkandcarefullydetailedjointsareclearlyvisiblethroughout.Theshopiscladinweatheringsteel, theWCbuilding inWesternredcedarboardsandthereception ishighlyglazedwithdeepcedarfinstoaddtextureandminimisesolargain.Allthecedarhasbeenleftuntreated.Itwillweathertopalesilvertomatchtheroof.

HarmondsworthBarnisregardedasanoutstandingexampleofmedievalcarpentry,andoneofthelargestsurvivingmedieval barns in England. The oakweather-boarded, oak framed, twelve-bay aisled barnwas

constructed for Winchester College in 1426/7, a date confirmed by dendrochronological dating of thetimbers, and provided the collegewith an income for at least 150 years. The only acceptable choice ofmaterialforitsconservationwastimberworkedusingtraditionalmethods.The600-year-oldbarnprovidedheritagecarpentrytrainingforoneapprentice,whilsttheseasonedcarpenterswereabletosharpentheirskillsonthecomplexstructuralrepairs.2. Maggie’sCentresprovideawelcoming‘homeawayfromhome’–aplaceofrefugewherepeopleaffectedbycancercanfindemotionalandpracticalsupport.ThedesignoftheManchestercentreestablishesadomesticatmosphere in a garden settingwitha greenhouseanda veranda. The centreaccommodatesa rangeofspacesfromintimateprivatenichestoalibrary.Naturallyilluminatedbytriangularrooflights,thebuildingissupportedbylightweighttimberlatticebeams.Thebeamsactaspartitionsbetweendifferentinternalareas,visuallydissolvingthearchitectureintothegardens.Thetimberbeamsaredesignedastrussesthatreflectthemagnitudeandorientationoftheloadsactingonthem,anythingsuperfluoustothestructuralsupporthasbeenremoved.ThedesignusesLaminatedVeneerLumber(LVL)timberwithnovisiblefixingbetweenthepieces.Thediagonalarrangementofthetrussesacrossthecentralspineprovidesstabilitytotheroofwithout the need for additional elements. The desire to create a low energy, homely environmentwithnaturalventilationanddaylightdefinedthedesign.3. MELLORPRIMARYSCHOOL

TheextensionforMellorPrimarySchoolprovidesaseriesofnewspacesbasedontheschool’s‘ForestSchool’ethos,believingthatlearningthroughtheoutdoorenvironmentiskeytohelpingchildrenbuildresilience,resourcefulnessandanabilitytoworktogether.Itis,ineffect,a‘treehouse’:aclusterofpitchedroofformssetonadeckextendingoutintothelandscape.TheWesternredcedarshinglecladdingallowsthebuildingtositcomfortablyinitsGreenBeltsetting.Tree-likeglulamframessupportthedeck,theroofsinternallyandthecanopiesexternally.Thenewclassroomandlibraryenjoyviewsintothesurroundingtreecanopy.Thecoveredexternaldeckareascanbeusedasforplayorasanoutdoorclassroom.The low-energybuildingfeatures a striking habitat wall designed and built in partnership with the pupils. The thickened wallaccommodatesbio-diversehabitatsforbirds,insects,smallanimalsandplants.

St.Clare’sCollegeprovidescourses in the InternationalBaccalaureate.Theoriginal site,a largedetachedGradeIIlistedhouse,wascreatedin1903byarchitectHenryTHare.Thelistedbuildingisattheheadofthefivenewpavilionbuildingsarrangedaroundanewquadranglebetweenexistingtrees.Thenewbuildingsaccommodate36studybedrooms,roomsforthreewardens,twocommonrooms,andanartstudio.Theresidentialpavilionsareconstructedofoak-cladCLT,comprising100mmthickwallandfloorplates.CLTwaschosenasthestructurehadtobecranedoverthelistedbuildingandcompletedintimeforthestartofthenewacademicyear.Thecellularnatureofthewallandfloorplatescanbeseeninthestructurallyglazedorielwindows.Thechoiceofoakasacladdingmaterial,bothinsideandout,wasdrivenbytheoriginalbuilding.Thenaturallyventilatedartstudiohasanexposedglulamportalframeinoak.5. Its interiorcelebratesthediurnalchanges indaylightandtakesadvantageofthedramaticviews.Deliveredwithinamodestbudgetof£7.5millionandcompletedovertwophases,thenewspacesincludeprivatecells,arefectoryandassociatedkitchen,workrooms,ameetingplace forbefore/afterchapelservices,guestspacesandacommunitychurchandchapel.Preferencewasgiventorenewable,recycledorlowenergymaterials.

This project redevelops the crypt at Christ Church Spitalfields, a Grade I listed building by NicholasHawksmoor,completed in1729,andwidelyregardedashismasterpiece.TheuseofEuropeanoak inthecryptspaceisinspiredbyHawksmoor’suseofmaterialsinthechurchabovebutwithcontemporarydetailing.The new lightweight, reversible timber structures have been designed to be discrete. The design andplacementoftheunvarnishedoakwallsmakesacleardistinctionbetweentheoldandnewandcreatesopenviewsalongthelengthandwidthofthespace.Hierarchyiscreatedbyhavingtwotypesofpaneling.Thewallstotheprimaryspacesaresimilartoplankandmuntinwallswithstaggeredboards.Inthebackofhouseareas,thewallsaredetailedasflushtonguedandgrooved.2. ThenewrearstaircaseisdesignedasadistinctcontemporaryinsertionintotheoldMedievalservicewingofPortledgeHouse,aGradeII*listedManorHouseinnorthDevon.Thestairreplacesadamagedmulti-phaseservicestairand formspartofa re-orderingof thehouse.Thestaircaseblendswith thewallpaneling tocreateahomogeneousdesignusingEnglishoakchevronsbetweendarkerwalnutfins.Onthestaircase,thewalnutfinsformspindlestoppedwithaleatherhandrail.Thespindlesarecutwitharcsofvaryingsizestocreate an organic flow. CNCmachining was used prior to the staircase being assembled by hand usingtraditionaljoinerytechniques.ItsdesignasabespokesculpturalpiecewasinstrumentalinitsapprovalbyHistoricEnglandandthelocalConservationOfficer.3. ‘rooms’foreachareawithintheopenplanspacehavebeencreatedusingasimplepaletteofmaterials.Thetimberdiningareadividesthekitchenfromthesittingarea.Chestnutwaschosenforitscolour,grainandstructurebothinternallyandoutsidewhereitisusedtoformaprojectingwindowseat.Larchfloorboardsrunthroughouttolinktheareastogether.

Ansty Plum, amid-centuryhousedesignedbyDavid Levitt andwood-lined stone studiodesignedby theSmithsons,hasundergonea retrofit and studioextension.Thebuildingsare situatedona steepwoodedhillsideoverlookingacollectionof12thcenturybuildings.Thehousehasasimpleopenplanwithasingularplanerectangularrooffollowingthegradientoftheland.Thestudio,hedgedintotheslope,peepsontoanancientwoodedtrack.CoppinDockraytransformedthehousebyremovingmanysequentialchangesmadeoverthepast50yearstoopenupthehouseandexpressthearchitectonicqualitiesoftheoriginalDouglasfirconstruction.AnewbedroomandstudywerecreatedwithbespokeDouglasFirjoinery.Thederelictstudiohasbeenbroughtbacktolife,actingasanancillarybedroomthatglowspinkwithDouglasfir.Asecludedshowerroomwascreatedbyextendingintothehill.AccesstotheoriginaldrawingsallowedCoppinDockraytointerpretmanyofthetimberdetails.2. SaneiHopkinswascommissionedtodesignanopen,lightreplacementhouseusinghigh-qualitytraditionalmaterials.Removing theexistinghouseandassociated landscapingallowedthe ‘Contours’of theoriginalmeadowsitetobereinstated.TheuseoftimberexternallywasprecludedbythePeakNationalParkAuthoritybecausethesiteisintheheartofaprotectedlandscapewherestoneistheprevalentmaterial.Stoneonlyactsasarainscreenandcladding.AcombinationofAmericanwhiteoak,Europeanoakandsomestainlesssteelhasbeenusedforthesuperstructure.Flitchedfeaturetrussessupporttheroofovertheswimmingpoolandmasterbedroomwithstainlesssteeltiesandrodfixings.Thehousehasbeendesignedwithsustainabilityatitscore,maximisecarbonstoragewhilstminimisingcarbonemissionsandenergyconsumption.Itutilisesbothlocalandrenewablematerialsasmuchaspossible.

Woodpeckerswasdesignedasatwo-storeyreplacementfora1930sbungalow.Thesiteisheavilytreedwithawell-establishedgarden.Theclientsneededsomewheretoretreattoatweekendsandwantedittohaveastrongrelationshipwiththegarden.Forspeedandcostatimberframewasadopted.Thestructureisentirelytimberstudwork,sittingonapiledconcreteslab.Thestudworkisfilledandover-cladwithinsulation,creatingathermallyandstructurallyefficientenvelope.Ratherthanpre-fabricationitwasbuiltonsiteresultinginamarginallylongerbuildtimebutwithfarbettercosts.Claddingtheprojectinopen-jointedtimberhascreatedasofteraesthetic.Larchwasselectedforitsstability,relativelylowcost,anditsabilitytobeuseduntreated.Thehousewillgraduallysettle-intothesiteascladdingweatherstosilvery-grey.Three-plylarchpanelsformhorizontalbandsaroundthehouse.Thesebandsservetobreak-upthefacadesaswellasreflectingthetimberringbeamstructureswithin.

PropertydeveloperLothburyorganisedacompetitiontodesigntwosetsofdoorsforaprestigiousnewbuildat55StJames'StreetinofWestminster.Theywantedthedoorstocreate‘anunquestionablesenseofarrival'atthebuilding.Inspirationcamefromthearea'srichhistoryofgentlemen'sclubs,luxurycraftsmanshipandbespoketailors.Thelargestofthetwosetsofdoors,madefromsolidoakand5mmthickoakveneer,arefortheStJames’Streetentrance.Thedesignofthedoorsiscleanwithcentraldoublefinstaperedandangledtotheplaneofthedoor.Thefinsrunthefullheightofthedoorsresemblingthelapelsofamorningsuit.Towardsthebasethereisabronzekickplatewithapatina.Thedoorstothesideentrance,whichallowaccesstotheresidentialflatsatthetopofthebuilding,aresimilarbutthelapelfeaturehasbeensimplified.

OnthegroundsoftheRoyalFortGardensinBristol,artistKatiePatersonandarchitectsZeller&Moyehavecreatedaparticipatory,publicartworkthatrelaysstoriesoftheplanet’shistoryandevolution.Hollowisameditativespacemadeupofover10,000uniquetreespecieswhosenarrativesspanmillionsofyears—frompetrifiedwoodfossilsfromtheearliestforeststhatemerged390millionyearsago,toemergentcategoriesofarboreallife.ThespecieswerecollectedsustainablyoverthreeyearsfromwidenetworksacrosstheglobeincludingXylariums,Herbariums,BotanicalGardens,institutesandprivatewoodcollectors.TheDouglasfirposts that form the façade reflect varyingheightsof treeswithina forest canopy.Once inside thewarmminiatureforest,visitorsexperienceamonumentalcollectionoftreespecimenssurroundingthem.Above,lightfiltersthroughaperturesintheceiling,mimickingthewaysunlightradiatesthroughaforest.FromKyototoCalifornia,thesamplesnarratestoriesfromacrosstheearthincludingtheIndianBanyantree,underwhichtheBuddhaachievedenlightenment,andtheJapaneseginkgotreeinHiroshima,whichsurvivedoneofthedarkestmomentsofhumanhistory.3. The glowing orchard design of the Kingston AncientMarket Place & Stalls has diversified the area. Theperforate,CLTmarketstallstradeduringthedaythentransformintolanternsatnight.TheuseoftimberechoestheTutortimberstructuresthatsurround.CLTpanels,chosenfordurability,tactilityandadaptability,formtheinvertedbowstringtrussroofs,thewallsanddoors.Thedesignisadaptable,shelvesandfixturescanbeaddedtotheinternaltimberwalls.ThehybridroofandcanopystructureutilisesCLTincompressionandthinsteelstrutsintensile,enablingthetimberthicknesstobeminimal.Thestallshavebeengroupedandpositionedtoopenupurbanvistas,capturingkeyviewsofAllSaint’sChurch,GuildHallandthehistoricalleyways,andadheretothestrictmechanicsandpsychologyofmarketstalls.

The TWIST was developed by the Emergent Technologies and Design Programme at the ArchitecturalAssociation School of Architecture for Timber Expo 2015.
