Protagonist

ClayClay is one of the people to receive the tapes. He is who Hannah hooked up with at a party. They also secretly liked each other.

Antagonist

JustinJustin is the first person to get the tapes.

He is Hannah’s first kiss and he is the one who started all the rumors about Hannah. Justin

appears twice on the tapes.

Favorite Character

TonyTony is the one who gave Hannah the tape recorder not knowing what she was going to do with it. Hannah then sends the second set of tapes to him along with his recorder. Tony then feels it is his responsibility to make sure

everybody on Hannah’s list listens to the tapes and sends them on.

Least Favorite Character

Tyler

Tyler was Hannah’s peeping tom.

Plot Summary

• Hannah commits suicide and makes tapes of thirteen reasons why she did it. The tapes get sent to everyone on her list of people who she talks about on the tapes.

Exposition

• The book begins with Clay coming home from school finding a shoe box sized package on his front step. The package contained seven tapes.

Rising Action

• Hannah feeling like no one understands and decides to end her life. Do to the thirteen significant events that happened.

Climax

• Hannah committing suicide.

Falling Action

Clay realizes that all the signs of suicide were there and wishes he would have notices them so he could have helped her.

Resolution

• Clay sending the tapes to the next person on Hannah’s list. Just as Hannah wanted.
