Teacher’s Notes:

• This initial book has a minimum of features and could be used as a model for several subsequent student-designed books.

• Two such projects are featured here:– a.) Focus on Action Verbs– b.) Writing with a seven sentence

essay format

a.) First project—Focus on Action Verbs

• This project would require the students to find, shoot and/or draw pictures that show how to play their favorite action games.

• This would give them practice with the nouns and verbs that go with that game.

• If a game is from their home countries, words from that student’s first language are useful and welcome, giving the student added expertise and confidence.

• This book could be called the “ing-thing” book to keep the focus on the “ing verbs” that go with gaming.

Example that uses our photo book as a model:

b.) Second Project—Seven Sentence Essay

1. Topic sentence is given: I want to introduce to you my favorite hero__________.

2. When sentence: He/she lived _________.

3. Where sentence: He is from _________.

4. What sentence: He/she is famous because…

5. Why sentence—Before this_________.

6. Fact sentence—Now_________.

7. Summary sentence: _________ is famous because he was _(summary adjective)_.

Example of a seven sentence essay:

• I want to introduce to you my favorite hero, Basil the Great.

• He lived 1600 years ago.• He is from Turkey from the city of

Caesarea near the Black Sea.• Basil the Great is famous because he

started the first Hospital. • Before this, sick people had no place

to go.• Now Hospitals are where sick people

go to get well.• Basil is famous because he was kind

to sick people.

Build the essay around photos and drawings from the first culture environment that can carry the meaning if the student doesn’t get all the words right—for example:
