The Colours of the Trinity
Last week the church was decorated in the colours of fire, red and gold, the spark of fire in the coming of the Holy Spirit. Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, and it is here that the colours become more complicated. To explain the colours used in decorating the church this Sunday, look at Rublev’s Icon. In this icon the Father sits to the left of the table clothed in garments that seem to shimmer, reflecting Heavenly Glory. To the right is the Holy Spirit, clothed in green and blue hues, the colours of the Earth, as she “...is everywhere present and fills all things…”, our earthly guide given to us by Jesus; and in the centre is Jesus, the Son, dressed in both the colour red, and the blue representing both His divine and human nature.
