WES ANDERSON IN-PERSON RETROSPECTIVE
October 3 - 5 >> Aero Theatre
Few contemporary directors have mastered as many variedtones as Wes Anderson. There's the combination of youthfulenthusiasm and disillusionment in RUSHMORE, the balancebetween playful fantasy and melancholic regret in THE LIFEAQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU, and the juxtaposition of character details with a sweeping vision of New York in THEROYAL TENENBAUMS. Anderson's voice is the most original inAmerican comedy since Preston Sturges. Join Wes Anderson atthe Aero for a complete retrospective of his work, including asneak preview of his latest, THE DARJEELING LIMITED.Series compiled by Gwen Deglise. Program Notes by Jim Hemphill.

YOU AIN'T HEARD NOTHIN' YET:A TRlBUTE TO AL JOLSON
Co-Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
October 5 - 7 >> Egyptian TheatreBelieve it or not, the first sound feature film with spoken dia-logue premiered 80 years ago (October 6, 1927)! The film wasTHE JAZZ SINGER and its star was none other than the leg-endary Mr. Al Jolson (1886 -1950), The World'sGreatest Entertainer. AlJolson was the pre-eminentsuperstar of his era; hisinfluence has been incalcu-lable. There isn’t a majorentertainer since 1920 whosomehow, some way hasnot been affected by themagic of Jolson. His pres-entation style of singing tothe audience and makingevery song an event, is mir-rored in the work of performers from Judy Garland to FrankSinatra, Mick Jagger to Michael Jackson. Join us for a weekendof Jolson films, a panel discussion on the restoration of “AlJolson in A Plantation Act” and a live Cabaret show in tribute of Jolson on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of thislandmark in motion picture history. Vintage attire encouraged!Series produced by Richard Halpern, David Greim, Michelle Malik with Margot Gerber.

CROOKS IN CLOVER: NOIR, FRENCH STYLE
October 19 - 28 >> Egyptian TheatrePresented in association with Ile de France Film Commission,
the Minister of Foreign Affairs, France and the French Film and TV office of the French Consulate. With the sponsorship of Agnes B.
Since our tribute to French noir maestro, Jean-Pierre Melville in1996, Melville-mania has swept the US (most recently, with the
re-release of LE DOULOS.)But Melville was not alonein re-inventing the crimefilm in French terms -directors Jacques Deray(BORSALINO), AlainCorneau (CHOICE OFARMS), Georges Lautner(CROOKS IN CLOVER),Rene Clement (JOYHOUSE), Claude Sautet(CLASSE TOUSRISQUES), to name only a
few, filtered their love ofAmerican gangster and noir movies through the rugged beautyof actors Alain Delon, Lino Ventura, Yves Montand, Jean-LouisTrintignant and the feline grace of actresses Romy Schneider,Catherine Denueve, Jane Fonda, Isabelle Adjani. Like theAmerican West Coast jazz scene of the 1950's, the Frenchcrime film was the very definition of "cool" - a quicksilver worldof silent killers and speeding Citroens. Join us for two spellbind-ing weeks with the French masters, including hard-to-see gemslike Costa-Gavras' ultra-rare debut, THE SLEEPING CAR MUR-DER, Melville's SECOND BREATH, Corneau's SERIE NOIRE,Yves Allegret's RIPTIDE and more!Series compiled by Chris D., Gwen Deglise and Axelle Fossorier.
LAFCA’S FILMS THAT GOT AWAYOctober 19 - 24 >> Aero Theatre
Every year, there are dozens of superb American and foreignfilms that fail to show commercially in the United States.Ironically, it's usually because these movies are unique, thatdistributors avoid the challenge of trying to sell them. Fear not, cinema fans. The L.A. FilmCritics Association, in asso-ciation with the AmericanCinematheque, has polledits membership and pro-grammed a festival com-pletely comprised of theirpicks of "films that gotaway." Bold, visionary, sexy, shocking and inde-scribable. These are thetitles the best critics intown pass among them-selves like rare jewels. Thetreasure box is now open to all, with overlooked gems plus in-person discussions with some giants of independent film andother indescribably rare treats!Series Compiled by LAFCA programming committee: Scott Foundas, Robert Koehler, WadeMajor and Ray Green.
HALLOWEEN WEEK HORRORSOctober 25 - 31 >> Aero Theatre

Plus don't miss ourall-night, big screen horrorthon: gore galore with Fulci's THEBEYOND and THE GATES OF HELL and marvel at the time-lessness of the classic midnight movie, FREAKS and that’s onlyhalf the horrors in store for you!
