TIDVG Particle Deposition

F.Velotti, C.Bracco, B.Goddard, M.Meddahi

Outline• Initial parameters–Particle distribution–Kicker waveforms

• Simulation for LHC beam• Simulation for HL-LHC beam• Conclusions and next steps

Initial parameters

• Optics: LHC Q20 -> Q_h = 20.13, Q_v = 20.18• Energy = 450 GeV• Dp/p = 0.29e-3• Number of bunches: 288• Bunch spacing: 25 ns• Tracking mode: MAD-X thin-tracking (thin-lens

approximation)• Area of each pixel = 0.25 mm2

LHC values• LHC Norm_emittance: 3.5 um (both planes)• p+/bunch = 1.15e11• Each macro particle = 1.15e8 p+

LHC values• HL- LHC Norm_emittance: 2.3 um (both planes)• p+/bunch = 2.3e11• Each macro particle = 2.3e8 p+

Particle Distribution• 1000 particles• Gaussian

distributions truncated at 3 𝜎

• Each bunch (288) composed of 1000 particles

• Bunch length supposed negligible

Kickers waveforms• MKDV synchronized at

6.975 us with the beam• Waveform sampled at

25 ns• Used the 5 different

current waveforms for the 5 MKDV/H obtained from the experts

• 41.4 kV (very pessimistic assumption)

Outline• Initial parameters–Particle distribution–Kicker waveforms

• Simulation for LHC beam• Simulation for HL-LHC beam• Conclusions and next steps

Simulation for LHC beamS=600.6076

Pixel_area=0.25 mm2

Simulation for HL-LHC beamS=600.6076 Pixel_area=

0.25 mm2

Outline• Initial parameters–Particle distribution–Kicker waveforms

• Simulation for LHC beam• Simulation for HL-LHC beam• Conclusions and next steps

Conclusions and next steps• Just preliminary study! • For LHC beam (1.15e11 p+/b), max particle

deposition is 3.31e11 p+/mm2

• For HL-LHC (2.3e11 p+/b), max particle deposition is 8.28e11 p+/mm2

• Use different HL-LHC values: • 2.5 um, 2.5p+/b• Pencil beam: 1.15 p+/b, 1 um

• Different MKDV voltage has to be considered for a more accurate analysis

• Studies of ‘common’ failure cases need still to done
