CONSTANTINE

What do we already know about Constantine?

Emperor Constantine

27 February 272 – 22 May 337

* The emperor Diocletian dies in 200 AD and the Eastern Roman Empire falls into chaos.

* Battles his rivals for the throne.

* Legend has it on the eve of a major battle Constantine saw the image of a cross in the sky and believed it was God stating he was on Constantine's side.

CONSTANTINE

* Constantine wins the Roman throne and converts from being a pagan into a Christian.

CONSTANTINE

* In 324 AD Constantine becomes sole ruler of Rome/moves capital east to and old Greek city Byzantium.

* Renames the city Constantinople, which means "City of Constantine."

CONSTANTINOPLE

From what you see on this map, what things do you notice about the city of Constantinople?

CONSTANTINOPLE

* The new capital of Constantinople was a crossroads for trade between Europe and Asia.

* Merchants could stop to trade goods by land or sea.

* It was easy to defend because the thick walls and moat to the west and the rest of the city was surrounded by the sea.

* Trade made the city and Constantine very wealthy.

CONSTANTINOPLE

* Spices from India, furs from Russia, silk from China, and grain from Egypt came into the city.

* Constantine used the wealth from the city to build temples, marketplaces, government buildings.

* Constantinople became the foundation for the new Byzantine Empire.

* After the WesternEmpire fell in 476, the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire survived.

Justinian

From our vocab who was Justinian?

Justinian

* Justinian ruled for nearly 40 years, from 527 to 565.

* His main goal was to reconquer the lands lost by the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

* He succeeded in conquering most of the lands (not all) but his wars were expensive and left his empire with money troubles.

From textbook page 37

* Like Constantine he was a Christian ruler.

Justinian

* In 532 AD he put down (defeated) a revolt and gained absolute power over the empire.

* After the revolt Justinian started a rebuilding program to repair the damage.

* Greatest building that was reconstructed was the Hagia Sophia.

Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia (The Holy Wisdom) is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the entire world.

Important thing to remember:

1) Christianity was allowed to spread throughout the Roman Empire when it was ruled by Constantine.

2) Constantinople was a stopping place for merchants and was easy to defend.

3) Justinian reconquered lands once controlled by Rome, established a new law code and rebuilt the Hagia Sophia church.

Homework:

1) What did Diocletian do that no Roman emperor had done before?

2) What sign did Constantine see in the sky before his last major battle?

3) What ban did Constantine lift and what religion did he convert to?

4) What was reborn under Constantine?

5) What was the name of Constantine's new capital?
