Title Tags and Meta Descriptions
Title tags and meta descriptions are
some of the most basic attributes of a
website or page that matter for SEO.
Every page on a website should have a
unique title tag and meta description.
Let’s define what these page attributes
are, and review some examples of them
in proper use.
Title Tags • A title tag is the short label inserted inside
the <title> code on a webpage. Title tags are usually at, or near, the top of the code.
• You can see a page’s title tag up in the “top” of your web browser.
• Title tags are generally what search engines display in their listings for a webpage.
• Every page needs a short, unique, descriptive title tag.
• Title tags should not be more than 80 characters in length.
• Do not “keyword stuff” a title tag. It is not a “ranking wishlist”.
Creating Title Tags For Example: You are an accountant based in
Escondido. You are building a 3 page website to
describe your services. The site will have a home/
index page, a contact page, and a page about your
fees. These are the pages and title tags you
should create:
Index page: www.escondidocpa.com Title tag: Escondido CPA and Accoun:ng Professional – Your Name
Contact page: www.escondidocpa.com/contact.html Title tag: Contact Escondido CPA at 760-‐384-‐1212 Today
Fees page: www.escondidocpa.com/fees.html Title tag: CPA Rates and Fees – Escondido
*Remember, )tle tags are what search engines display in their lis)ngs.
Meta Descriptions • Meta descriptions are brief 1-2 sentence
descriptions of a web page.
• They are labeled <meta=”description”> inside your page code, and are usually near the <title> tag at the top of the page/code.
• Meta descriptions should not be longer than 250 characters.
• Meta descriptions are typically displayed in search results beneath the link for your page, and should invite users to click on your listing.
• Every page on a website should have a unique meta description.
Creating Meta Descriptions Ex: Continuing with our Escondido accountant website example, here are some example meta descriptions for each of the 3 pages.
Index page: www.escondidocpa.com
Meta description: “Professional CPA and Accounting services in Escondido from EscondidoCPA.com. Call today and get a free consultation on tax planning, business accounting, and more.”
Contact page: www.escondidocpa.com/contact.html
Meta description: “Contact EscondidoCPA.com at 760-384-1212 for a FREE consultation for your business or personal taxes. 20+ years experience, licensed CA CPA #18LA8H3.
Rates page: www.escondidocpa.com/rates.html
Meta description: “Competitive rates for professional CPA services in Escondido. Get a quote and a free consultation for your taxes or accounting call 760-384-1212.”
*Remember, your meta descrip)on must be unique. Think of it like an “ad”. Search engines typically display snippets of meta descrip)ons in their results. Invite the user to click
