Summer is upon us, after a very busy year. July and August weekends are busy with Weddings and events and then Fall will be back before we can blink. This July happy hour will be on the second Thursday, July 14 and will be a Summer barbecue theme. Please join us for some fun drinks and food. A huge, huge thanks to my staff once again. We had a record breaking year and some huge parties! Mancini Electric 50th Anniversary party, held on June 18, was a spectacular event with over 300 guests and the room looked amazing; draped in red and black and gold accents. Some of the best desserts you could ever try were provided by Baked With Love, owner Elizabeth Roberts; and Maine Event Design and Decor provided back drops and beautiful centerpieces. Photos will appear on the IHC Facebook page. Have a safe and Happy July 4th! Kimberly A. McDonough

Two IHC administered scholarships were awarded at the June 16, 2016 General Meeting.
Long time scholarship benefactors, Dominic and Linda Reali, awarded the Reali Scholarship to Cassidy Coyne, daughter of IHC members, Patti and John Coyne. Cassidy will be attending the University of New England in the fall. She graduated from Deering High in the top 7% of her class with better than a 95% average. She was the recipient of the St. Anselm book award which is “awarded to a student in the class of 2016 that has excellent academic achievement, an awareness of social responsibility, a display of leadership skills, and possesses strong character.” According to her guidance counselor, Tracey Moore, this “describes Cassidy perfectly.” Cassidy read her winning essay about her mother to the membership.
The first annual Germani Family Scholarship was presented to Erika Darling by Louis and Rose Germani's daughter, Liz. Erika is the wife of IHC member, Michael Darling. Erika will be returning to Kaplan University this fall, seeking her RN. She currently has a 4.0 GPA and as her Student Advisor, Matthew Cremer, said, he is “confident that she will continue to turn in similarly excellent academic performances in this term and the terms to follow.” Erika read her winning essay about her mother-in-law, Nikki Cox, to the membership.
Our thanks to the Germani Family and Dominic and Linda Reali for their ongoing support of the IHC scholarship program. Without the generosity of such dedicated IHC members we would be unable to offer these scholarships each year.
If you are interested in joining the scholarship committee, please contact Carl Paquette via email: crpaquette@maine.rr.com or by phone (207)956-3588.

GIN RESULTS
We had another successful spring season for our Gin players. The nine winners were Tim Hamm, Jean Shaw, Sam Mack, Bev Waterman, Dick Barter, Joe Ferrante, Mary Toppi, Bob Allen, and Sis Norris.
After the play off, the following people placed:
First Place-Jean Shaw
Second Place-Sammy Mack
Third Place-Sis Norris
Congratulations to all the top players. The bottom nine players decided to play for the top of the bottom. Carolyn Barker won that playoff.
I want to thank everyone in the gin family for everything this spring. It was a pleasure to host gin, and I am planning on hosting it again next year. Gin will start up again sometime in September.
In the meantime, if anyone is interested in playing gin during the summer, some of us will be play-ing on Wednesday evenings in the Cantina. Come on down if you are interested in playing.
If you would like to learn how to play, I will be available to teach you how to play on Wednesday evenings this summer. Give me a call at 899-5149, and we can arrange a time to play. We would love to have more members join us on Wednesday nights this fall.
One Cup Flour, Four Eggs, and A Pinch of Salt We need your recipes!!!
The IHC Activity Committee is producing a new cookbook due out in November. We have collected 60+ recipes to date, but we need more. You only need to send in ONE recipe to help make this a success.
You can drop your recipe off at the IHC or send them to Vicki Dunn at vdunn@maine.rr.com.

The Charity Committee is taking a well deserved break for the summer months but that doesn't mean we're not around to help when needed. Please don't hesitate to call or email me, or any other member of the Charity Committee, if you know of anyone that may be in need of some aid.
Thank you and have a wonderful summer!

There will be no Italian Movie Nights during the summer, but ……
Join us again in September for the first movie of the fiscal year. The movie, released in 1950, is about one of the most famous Italian-Americans of the 20th Century. It’s an American movie entirely in English and is sort of auto-biographical based on this person’s career. You can’t rent it, buy it or see it at the movies or on TV in the United Sates. You’ll only be able to see it at the IHC.
A Thesis on Italian Immigration Experiences
Any children or grandchildren of Italian immigrants interested in telling their own story of their folks’ Italian immigrant experience, and who would like to be interviewed for the record to be archived in the Library of Congress, please contact Robin DiDominicus at (323) 810-8341.
Book for sale
There are still some copies of Jamie Carter Logan’s book “Built on Family” for sale for $10 in the Cantina with 30% of the proceeds going to the Cultural Committee. As Jamie states in her Introduction, the book strives to provide a deeper understanding of life in Portland’s Little Italy and the key role which family and community played in day-to-day life, while furthering an understanding and appreciation of Italian-Americans’ contribution to Portland.
Upcoming Events:
Trip to Italy (Sicily, Calabria, Naples, Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Capri, Mt. Vesuvius, Rome) scheduled for September 26th through October 8th, 2016.
There are no Cultural events scheduled for July, but your Cultural Committee is hard at work to provide
the IHC membership with some new and exciting programs to span the new fiscal year.
Italian Idiom for July:
Fare le corna a qualcuno (to put the horns on someone). If your wife or
girlfriend 'puts horns on you', it means she’s having an affair. You can either use the
phrase or simply make the horns gesture to imply someone is being cheated on.
But where does the expression come from? In Greek mythology, Parsifal, the Queen
of Crete, had an adulterous relationship with the Cretan Bull. Her son, the Minotaur,
was born with the body of a man and head of a bull – the horns acting as a symbol
of his mother’s extra-marital affair. Italian cities which were founded by the Greeks, like Naples,
inherited several of their gestures and sayings. Nowadays the gesture can be used as an insult even if
you've got no reason to assume someone's partner has been unfaithful. For example, you’ll often see
angry Italian soccer players make the horns sign at the referee!
