within the fortifications surrounding the city

the Wipers Times and Grotten Santé beers are
brewed, among others.
You can join one of the brewery visits if you
want to learn about the history of this site, the
operations, or the story behind the brewery.

Hops farmers Wout and Benedikte are the
fourth generations of hops growers providing
Belgian brewers with the best quality hops.
Benedikte fascinates both young and old
visitors with the story of Belgian hops and the
Poperinge hops shoots. A fun outing for all

LEMAHIEUPOPERINGEYou can discover all the smells and flavours of
hops at the hops firm of Ivan Lemahieu and Rosa
Lobeau. Ivan and Rosa would be happy to take
you on a tour and teach you anything you want to
know. You will learn that hops do more than give
beer its flavour, but also have a medicinal effect,
and that the farmed hops vines can even be
turned into decorative art pieces.
During winter and early spring, they will be
working hard on harvesting the most expensive
vegetable in Belgium – the famous hops shoots.
You can attend workshops and create your own
hops wreath from mid-September to November.
Or would you rather experience the harvest
yourself? Make sure to reserve a spot during the
first weeks of September. Once you complete the
workshop with a wealth of new knowledge, you
can enjoy a delicious hoppy beer before Ivan and
Rosa cheerfully waive you goodbye.

BELHOPPOPERINGE
In 1903, Carolus Boeraeve moved to a farm on
the Schoudemonthoek, a stone’s throw from
the Helleketelbos, to grow hops there. A few
years later, his Buvrin hops win a price at a
hops’ exhibit. His son Maurits also catches the
hops bug, and soon many hops fields pop up
along the Kleine Casseldreef, which are still
there, 100 years later. Grandson Albert starts
growing hops within the ring of Poperinge, only
to return to the Schoudemonthoek in the 60s.
In the meantime, hops farmer Gery, the fourth
generation, has operated the hops firm
for 40 years, and the fifth generation is ready
to continue the family tradition.
There are currently 7.50 hectares of hops at
the Schoudemonthoek, both aromatic hops
(for the pleasant aromas) and bitter versions
(for a bitter, spicy hint). The mild sea climate
and the Poperinge sand-loam soil give the
hops a unique flavour pallet which can be
tasted in the beers brewed using Poperinge
hops. All our hops have the Belgian hops logo.

BREWERY & ABBEY ST. SIXTUSIn 1838 - 1839, the priests of the
Sint-Sixtus Abbey first started brewing
Trappist beers. In 1945, the abbot decided
to limit production to quantities needed
to be self-sufficient. The next year, the beer
was brewed based on a license in the
Sint-Bernardus brewery in Watou.
It wasn’t until 1992 before the Westvleteren
Trappist beers were fully brewed in the abbey
itself again as a new rule was introduced
which required that only beers brewed
in an abbey could have the Trappist beer label.
Three beers are brewed: Trappist Westvleteren
Blond (5.8°), Acht (8.0°) and Twaalf (10.2°).
In 2005, the ratebeer.com website elected the
Westvleteren Twaalf as the best beer of the
world. The Westvleteren Acht also scored high in
the rankings.
The abbey and the brewery are not accessible to
the public. The Westvleteren beers can only be
purchased on site or at the brewery after online
reservation. Across the street you can also taste
their beers in café ‘In De Vrede’.

DE DOLLEBROUWERS
Brewery De Dolle Brouwers has existed under
its current name since 1980. That year, four
friends acquired brewery the Costenoble,
which had closed shortly before. The name “De
Dolle Brouwers” (The mad brewers) is derived
from the bicycle club of the friends called “De
Dolle Dravers” .
The brewery enjoys regional and international
fame with beers like Oerbier, Arabier, and Stille

are welcome on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM.

TALBOTHOUSE
“If you are willing to forget your class or
standing, visit the Talbot House.”
At the end of 1915, chaplains Philip “Tubby”
Clayton and Neville Talbot opened a unique
recreational facility.
Talbot House quickly grew into the number
one soldier’s home of the British Army. It
offered visitors a home, relaxation, and a place
to forget the war, to become human again. All
military staff was welcome there, from ordinary
soldier to higher officers, an Every Man’s Club.

LIJSSENTHOEKLijssenthoek Military Cemetery is the
impressive witness of over four years of
wartime violence. The hamlet of Lijssenthoek

Great War. The visitor centre, which can

IN FLANDERS FIELDS MUSEUM
The In Flanders Fields Museum tells the story
of World War I in the West-Flemish
front region. The museum is located in the
Lakenhallen in Ieper, an important symbol
of the suffering caused by war, and the later
recovery. The new exhibition focuses more on
the personal stories of ordinary people, and
creates an even better link with the landscape
of the First World War in Flanders. Visitors can
now also climb the Belfort Tower and enjoy a
unique view of the once ravaged region.

YPERMUSEUMIeper, a worldwide symbol of the commemoration
of the First World War, but there is so much more.
It has a rich history spanning eleven centuries:
Textile City, Large Medieval City, Fortified
City, Bishop City, Military City, Ravaged and
Recovered City, Cat City, Peace City, Westhoek
City ... Ieper has been, and is, it all.
The background is nothing to smirk at: the Yper
Museum is located in a wing of the Lakenhallen,
Europe’s largest civil complex in the Neogothic
style. The Lakenhallen also host the Flanders
Field Museum, the Knowledge Centre of the
Ieper Museums, the Tourism Service, and
the regional visitor centre. This makes our
Lakenhallen one large museum building. It is
certainly worth bringing your children to a visit to
this museum.

DEMENENPOORTThe Menenpoort is the most well-known
Commonwealth War Memorial in Flanders. The
gate was designed on the drawing tables in
London by Sir Reginald Blomfield while the war
was still raging, and was created at the location
of the former Menenpoort, the road along
which the troops moved to the front.
The Menenpoort was revealed in 1927. The
stone panels show the name of 54,896 soldiers
from the Salient which were reported missing
and have unmarked graves. You will only
find the names of soldiers that died between
August 1914 and August 1917 here. Those who
were reported missing between 16 August 1917
and the end of the war (34,000 names) are
etched into the stone tables on the Tyne Cot
Cemetery in Passendale.

THE LASTPOST
Since 1928, the Last Post is played every
night at 20:00 underneath the impressive

who fought in the First World War at the
