SOLAR ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Electrical current, anytime, anywhere – something we all take for granted. More than two billion people, however, live in another reality: in so called remote areas, far away from power plants and electrical grids. And for this reason, they simply must live without many of the conveniences of our civiliza-tion.
Our Company realized that Nigeria with a population of over 120 million people has less than 3.000 Megawatts of electricity and we understand the potentials of sun energy, unlike other source such as fossil fuels and hydropower generation.
We note with sadness, the hardship and suffering of the people occasioned by the lack of electricity supply. These include but not limited to:
Loss of means of livelihood by workers whose businesses are solely depen-dent on constant power supply.
Loss of lives in hospitals and clinics without alternative source of power supply.
High cost of production by industries relying on generator power supply.Threat to Nation and State security of lives and properties due to inability to
operate installed surveillance equipment.Meridiana Impianti snc observes that this has led to the total collapse of
several industries which is impacting negatively on the economy of Nigeria in general inspite of the huge sum of money spent by the federal Government of Nigeria on Electricity generation without any meaningful result, hence the alter-native energy supply: Solar Energy. Photovoltaic offers solutions like no other technology: PV systems are robust, durable, easy to install and maintain.
Introducing PV in Africa is a way to combat both energy problem and clima-te change. Right now, two billion people lack access to electricity grid: they have only kerosene and firewood to get light and heat, and both, as fossil fuels, produ-cing tons of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, and their fumes are very toxic.
In Africa most villages lack even the most basic services such as light, heat, water pumps, communications, radios, cell phones and the energy to charge them. They lack the ability to carry out some useful activity at night such as night fishing or to produce artwork.
In larger communities the need for a reliable source of energy is even more critical, at schools, clinics, hospitals and community services.
If there is something that Africa does not lack is the Sun. Introducing Photo-voltaics in Africa will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. This will make our communities more independent and able to develop. Not to mention the reduc-tion of green-house gases, an essential step to combat climate change.
.
Page - 71
MERITS OF SOLAR ENERGY PROJECT IN NIGERIA
To provide constant and reliable power supply to Nigeria;• Improvement of the socio-economy of the State;• Adequate provision of job opportunities to the good people of the State;• It will encourage and invite foreign investors to the State;• It will make “Nigeria” a role model in Africa;• It will improve the standard of living of the Nigerian people;• It will increase directly the IGR of the State;• It will be a direct form of technology transfer to Nigeria.•
The sunshine pours on the earth at a rate of 100.000 trillion Kcal/hr, this amount of solar energy produced per hour is equivalent to the total worldwi-de energy consumption per year. And from our records, Nigeria produces as low as 30 watts of electricity per person while South Africa with a population of about 40 million produces 800 watts for person, they experience no power failure because they injected solar energy into their power generation. The ge-nerated Energy from the sun is without environmental harmful compounds that can lead to global warming or destruction of ecosystem, it is extremely cheap and steady and has life span of at least 25 years with proper planning.
Meridiana Impianti snc realized the need of a reliable power supply to the good people of Nigeria, hence, the importance to introduce the Centralized Solar Energy System.
Due to the problems of power failure, pollution, high rise in petroleum products prices and destruction of ecosystem in the World, which have become problems of major concern, Meridianna Impianti snc decided to introduce this noble policy to the Nigerian States to provide an alternative of a reliable and constant source of electric power.
Meridiana Impianti snc is affiliated to Meridiana Impianti situated in Palermo, Italy which has extensive experience in large scale, all over the world from designing, planning, training, manufacturing, distributing and installing of Solar Energy Systems ranging from one watt to several Megawatts.
Once our projects are implemented and functional, we train local people to carry out maintenance and proper care of systems and equipment. Our projects provide a complete network grid of connection systems that link towns and villages from few Centralized Solar Substations that ensure good quality stan-dard, security, easy maintenance and also ensure electrical and mechanical durability.
Meridina Impianti snc has decades of diversified experience and a history of success, wide range of interaction with customers and vendors and strong technological competence. Our employees are highly skilled to create innovati-ve products and solutions for our customers all over the world.
Page - 72
STAND-ALONE PROJECT IN NIGERIA
In remote areas, rural villages and even the cities themselves, the electri-cal power supply is not stable continuous or reliable. Continuous breakdowns, brownouts and blackouts are common occurrences. Critical services, such as lighting at schools, communications, life support systems at hospitals and clini-cs are interrupted and time and information is lost. Not to mention, house hold appliances and running water suddenly stop functioning. The integrated use of a different and reliable power source of energy is the solution. PHOTOVOLTAI-CS are a reliable and efficient power source.
Secure power supply for off-grid systems: can forms a standard AC voltage grid into which all users and generators can be easily integrated. Providing an innovative solution for supplying electricity to remote locations and for creating an emergency supply for areas with unstable grids.
PRINCIPAL FUNCTION
The batteries are charged from the photovoltaic system through the inver-ter that maintains and regulates the voltage and frequency of the AC grid within allowable limits. Both users and generators are connected directly to this grid. If there is an energy surplus, the inverter charges the batteries; if there is a shortage, it supplies the grid with electricity from the batteries.
Example of autonomous systems for multi-family independent production of electricity.
Page - 73
Thanks to its highly developed battery management system, it can recognize the charge levels at any given moment and, through its function as system ma-nager, it makes further decisions as well: if batteries are discharged or if there is a great demand for electricity, the inverter can start a diesel generator or it can disconnect loads as needed. If the batteries are fully charged and there is little demand, it can reduce the solar plant’s electricity production.
FLEXIBLE GRID LAYOUT
In addition to solar and small hydro plants, diesel generators and other elec-tricity generators (immersion pumps, etc.), as well as all 230-volt loads, can be connected to the AC stand-alone grid. This avoids costly DC cabling and provi-des great flexibility. The special advantage: stand-alone grids can be set up quic-kly and can be adapted to increasing demand without much expense.
SMART POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM
The combined use of various energy sources such as solar, wind, water, me-chanical and the existing electricity is possible thanks to SMART POWER SUP-PLY SYSTEM, developed by the Meridiana Impianti snc, in collaboration with international companies specialized in the production of energy.
Using the most advanced European technologies concerning production, sto-rage and transfer of electricity, and through careful design you can create modular systems that can provide electricity continuously and independently from the instability of the main electricity grid with power ranging from certain kW to 100 kW.

Page - 76
To understand the importance of energy saving in lighting, for example, we must think that it accounts for more than 40% of the electricity consumption in each country, such as commercial buildings, government buildings, institutions and street lighting. In Europe it amounts to over 160 TWh/year, this is the same as 160,000,000,000,000 Watts-hour/year.
A significant reduction in energy consumption would be achieved only by acting on the lighting system itself with simple actions such as:
- Saving and Energy efficiency
Replacing traditional light bulbs with LED technology • that have greater luminous efficiency, the ratio lm/w, that reduces the power demand and consequently the electricity consumed.
The lifespan of LED is rated for 50.000 hours
A single LED chip produces 1,500 lumens,
which is the same amount of light produced
by a 100 watt incandescent lamp but with a
power consumption of only 14 watts.
Page - 77
The growing interest in the environment and energy savin-gs, added to the soundness of our Company and the know-how have led to specialization in a growing sector:
LED LIGHTING.
Every day we provide assistance and advice to
independent installers outside the company that have found the benefits and advantages of
LED lamps.
