TO GEELONG
Welcome to our 6 day tour to Geelong featuring the Portarlington National Celtic Festival. With personal pickup from home, we head to the beautiful venue of Overnewton Castle. The castle was built in 1849 and now stands as a prominent heritage building. This Scottish Baronial style castle set amidst 4 acres of private tranquil English gardens makes the perfect setting for our High Tea lunch after which
we enjoy an historical tour. Next we travel to Geelong where we meet a local
specialist to take us on a city sights tour. As we familiarize ourselves with the surroundings we also learn of the significance of Geelong and of course a few stories of interest along the way.
OVERNIGHT: Rydges, GEELONG
DAY 2: Saturday 8th June, 2019
GEELONG
Our first stop today is the National Wool Museum. Geelong for most of its history has been one of the great wool cities of Australia and the nearly 200 buildings in the area, classified by the National Trust, keep residents and visitors mindful of the city’s heritage. The museum consists of more than 7,500 objects including photographs, documenting the Australian wool story, from
the sheep’s back to the clothes rack. Our next stop is at the Geelong Gallery, which is one of Australia’s leading and oldest regional art galleries. With time to browse through the collection we then
board our coach once again to travel to our lunch venue at The Geelong Boathouse. This refurbished vintage barge is the perfect place to enjoy modern Australian seafood. After lunch we head down the coast to visit Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, famous for the location featured in “Seachange” a popular ABC series.
OVERNIGHT: Rydges, GEELONG
DAY 3: Sunday 9th June, 2019
PORTARLINGTON NATIONAL CELTIC FESTIVAL
Following breakfast we head off to Portarlington to spend the day at the Portarlington National Celtic Festival. The Festival uses a range of venues within the town, including community halls and spaces, the hotel, restaurants, cafes and churches. Marquees are also set up on the foreshore to provide additional venues; these include the
Village Stage, Celtic Club, Wine Bar, and Celtic Markets. Our entry ticket will enable us to enter more than 14 venues in the town from 10am until 12 midnight! At a designated time,
we’ll meet up again for the drive back to Geelong for dinner. Lunch own expense/arrangement today
OVERNIGHT: Rydges, GEELONG
DAY 4: Monday 10th June, 2019
GREAT OCEAN ROAD
We have a full day today exploring one of Australia’s most spectacular coastal drives. Following an early breakfast, we travel to Bellbrae where we visit the Great Ocean Road
Chocolaterie & Ice Cremery to taste their wares before joining the spectacular Great Ocean Road. Built to honour the servicemen and
women of World War One, the road extends more than 300 kilometres along some of the best coastal scenery this country has to offer. We travel through the coastal town of Anglesea to Lorne, which was the first place to be declared an area of Special Significance and Natural Beauty by the Victorian Government. The approach to Lorne is spectacular. This popular Victorian seaside village, located on Loutitt Bay overlooks the Otway Hills. From Lorne we continue through Kennett River, keeping an eye out for wild Koalas, Kookaburras, Parrots and Lorikeets in the eucalyptus trees
and on to Apollo Bay where we leave the coast and wind our way through the slopes of the Otway Ranges and the Otway National Park.
The spectacular Otway Fly is a tree top walk, the longest and highest canopy walk of its kind in the world. There is a 300-metre flat walk from the carpark to the Visitors Centre so wear some comfortable shoes. After our walk we enjoy our lunch here. This afternoon we continue along the full length of the Port Campbell National Park - the western section of the Great Ocean Road which is known as the “Shipwreck Coast”. We stop to see the famous Twelve Apostles, towering limestone stacks with wild waves crashing at their bases, as they dominate the coastline near Port Campbell. After our sightseeing, we drive up to the Princes Highway and make our way back to Geelong.
OVERNIGHT: Rydges, GEELONG
DAY 5: Tuesday 11th June, 2019
LOCAL TOURING
This morning we make our way to the Werribee Open Range Zoo where we board our special safari coach to take a drive through the Zoo. The magnificent wildlife, including rhinos, giraffes, zebras and antelopes will seem almost touchable. We’ll have an early lunch at the Zoo’s café before we
head to Point Cook to visit the Point Cook Air Force Museum, birthplace of the Australian Flying Corps and the Royal Australian Air Force. With a bit of luck we may be there in time for the interactive flying display from the Point Cook base! Next we head to the famous Werribee Park Mansion, long regarded as Victoria's finest rural colonial homestead. On arrival we take a walk through the State Rose Garden. The garden features 4,500 plants from 100 species in the shape of a giant Tudor rose. Completed
in 1882, the gardens were allegedly laid out by the curator of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens and feature not only a parterre, but also a lake, grotto, glasshouses, meandering pathways, extended vistas and British fauna and flora, including many venerable trees. We have time to explore the gardens before heading back to the motel for our final dinner on tour.
OVERNIGHT: Rydges, GEELONG
Day 6: Wednesday 12th June, 2019
HOMEWARD BOUND
Queenscliff is an enchanting historic town that was established in 1838 as a pilot station to guide ships through the Rip (the narrow entrance to Port Phillip Bay). Once
known as “Queen of Watering Places” it is imbued with old world character, historic hotels and homes, stores, rugged beaches and even a bona fide fort, built to defend Port Phillip Bay from foreign navies, privateers and other undesirables. Our first stop is the Queenscliff Maritime Museum.
The museum covers the maritime history of Queenscliff, Southern Port P h i l l i p a n d t h e B a s s S t r a i t interface. We enjoy our final tour lunch together before boarding the mid-afternoon ferry to Sorrento, where our chauffeurs will be waiting to take us home.
