The foliage colour of ourgarden ornamentalsshould be simply outstand-
ing every fall. While many gar-dens will be ablaze with a foliagebonanza, many others are miss-ing this important seasonal event. It is so easy to choose flowering and ornamentaltrees that bloom in the spring but with a littlecare you can, at the same time, select trees thatprovide a beautiful fall display as well.
Dogwoods are a prime example. ‘Florida’dogwoods, native to the eastern United States, provide outstanding fall colour. As a rule ofthumb, they are shorter and bushier than ournatives, making them ideal for screening. Themost popular ‘Florida’ is the ‘Rubra’ or ‘PinkDogwood’. Its masses of dark-pink blossomsin May of each year are a welcome sight. Thevariety ‘Rainbow’ displays a profusion of richtri-coloured leaves that provide some of themost spectacular fall colour. Few sights are asbeautiful in autumn as sunshine illuminatingthese leaves.
The many varieties of ‘Kousa’ or Chinesedogwoods extend the blooming period in thespring because they bloom in June and July, when other varieties have finished. They alsotolerate quite a bit of shade, which may be ofinterest for those of you living in heavily treedareas. Their fall leaves are a brilliant, vibrantred with huge edible seed pods hanging likegiant raspberries throughout the tree. It is suchan interesting plant to have in the garden, and Itruly hope that more folks use them. There aremany new varieties, some with stunning varie-gated foliage that also turns amazing colours.
Japanese maples certainly lead the pack inthe outstanding colour department. The onlyproblem these days is making a choice betweenthe many fine varieties. One of the finest, ‘Acergriseum’, often called the ‘Paper Bark’ maplebecause of its arbutus-like peeling red bark, has brilliant red foliage. The ‘Coral Bark’ maple‘Sango Kaku’ is considered to be one of themost outstanding of all maples. The autumncolour range of red maples is everything fromdeep burgundy to the most vibrant fire enginered, but don’t overlook the green-leafed variet-ies, like ‘Osakazuki’, that also offer an incred-ible range of fall colours.
Another unique tree that has not been read-ily available until the past few years is the‘Persian Parrotia’. It is a small and rather slow-growing shrub that provides a beautiful displayof dense-headed flowers with red stamenssurrounded by woolly brown bracts before theleaves open. In fall, the filbert-type leaves turn
brilliant scarlet to orange. When the leaves dis-appear, it reveals quite an interesting smoothgrey winter bark that flakes to show intriguingwhite patches.
One of the most fascinating fall trees is theJapanese stewartia. It is a summer bloomerthat often carries right on into the fall. Theflowers are truly distinctive, starting off aslittle round white balls that burst open like a ca-mellia, revealing bright yellow anthers. That’swhy it is often referred to as a pseudo-camellia.Those white flowers, combined with foliage thatfirst turns scarlet, then bronze and finally pur-ple, make this tree a wonderful fall specimen.
If you’re looking for a colourful tree that isquite resistant to pests, how about the ‘Katsura’tree or ‘Cercidiphyllum japonicum’. It is amedium-sized tree with attractive round leavesthat have a purple tint on their outer rim allsummer long. The unusual shape of the leavesand the beautiful yellow to scarlet fall colourscertainly make it a great garden plant, espe-cially at this time of year. Its leaves also have asweet scent of lightly burnt sugar. There is onlyone tiny problem – it doesn’t hold its fall colourvery long.
One of my favourite small trees is the littleknown and unfortunately, seldom planted‘Sourwood’ tree. Oxydendrum arboreum hasmultitudes of long creamy white flowers indrooping racemes that add lots of colour to aJuly and August garden. Almost immediatelyafter flowering, the long narrow leaves turn abrilliant scarlet and last well into the fall. It’s abeautiful smaller tree for sunny or shady loca-tions.
Every garden should have at least one‘Burning Bush’, and if you only have a smallgarden, there is a compact form now avail-able. The ‘Euonymus alata’ has dense twiggybranches with interesting corky wings, makingit very attractive in winter, but its small deepgreen leaves turn brilliant orange-red in fallalong with hundreds of tiny orange-red fruits. These plants also make a nice deciduous hedge.
‘Enkianthus’ has, perhaps, one of the mostattractive fall colours of any flowering shrub. It looks somewhat like a small-leafed rhododen-dron with red Pieris japonica-like flowers inspring. Its tiny leaves turn brilliant red for thelongest time each fall, making it a super addi-tion to any autumn garden.
These are a few of the more unique andbeautiful plants that deserve a spot in anygarden, not only for fall, but also for interest-ing year round contributions. Fall is one of thevery best times to plant, so why not add at leastone of these hardy plants to your garden collec-tion for an autumn show. A sunny location andwell drained soil creates the best scenario forvibrant fall colour.
