2013 IMEA Honors and All State Orchestras

Trumpet Audition Information

Welcome from the Orchestra Division Vice President

Dear All State Orchestra Student,

Congratulations on your selection for the IMEA All State Festival Orchestras. You have proven yourself to be

among the most talented and committed young musicians in the state and should feel proud of your

accomplishments!

The level of your preparation for this special opportunity will have a significant impact on the quality of the

experience you will have. All orchestra musicians should carefully prepare the required scales, etudes (for harp,

woodwinds, brass, and percussion), and excerpts as outlined below.

We hope that your auditions go well and that you have an inspirational and enjoyable All State experience!

Clark Chaffee IMEA Orchestra Division Vice President clarkchaffee@gmail.com

Jeremy Marino IMEA Orchestra Division Vice President – elect orchestra@ilmea.org

2

Congratulations 2013 All-State Orchestra Wind & Percussion Selectees! You have been selected from many outstanding musicians to represent your District in the Orchestra Division at the 2013 Illinois Music Educator’s All-State Conference in Peoria in January. Be sure to read all the information in your audition packet as the orchestra audition is different from the band audition. Please contact Clark Chaffee, Orchestra Vice-President, or myself, Kris Cox, if you have any questions. We want this to be a great musical experience for you.

Again, congratulations, and Good Luck in Peoria! Kris Cox Band Division Vice-President Our Saviour School, Jacksonville 217-473-6911 or kriscox30@yahoo.com

Notes on the Audition

Woodwind and brass scales are the same at state as they are for district. Woodwind and brass players will audition on one etude (as listed) from the district audition. Everyone will have sight-reading as part of the audition. Everyone will have excerpts to prepare. 1. All audition excerpts are included in this packet. These include excerpts from each of the main performance works for both orchestras. Audition judges will choose from these for chair and orchestra placement. The excerpts in the packet are presented in the order that the works are listed in the "Audition excerpts" list (below). 2. At the end of this packet you will find “Sections Recommended for Practice” These are challenging sections from the performance repertoire that are likely to be too difficult to master in two days. These sections WILL NOT be asked for at the audition. However, it is recommended that these sections be prepared in advance. It is very important that each player arrive well prepared on all music for All-State weekend.

3

For the Audition

1. IMEA Scales, same as District audition. 2. TRUMPET: Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet, J.B. Arban, ed. Edwin F. Goldman and Walter M. Smith; Carl Fischer, Etude #12 – Allegro Moderato, (14 Characteristic Studies). Meas. 1-Fine (p.296) 3. Orchestral Excerpts from the Honors and All-State Orchestra Repertoire, listed below.
