William Longhurst, Jamie Harper and Nicholas Williams have been
selected for the opportunity to construct an aeroplane which will fly at the
High Energy Air Show this weekend at Parkes.
On Sunday, Trundle Central School will have a display stall at the show to
exhibit the amazing work our students have produced through the School to
Work program.
Good luck to our remarkable students with the construction. We are looking
forward to having the wider community to come and watch this event and
support our students.

Principal’s
Message
This week is incredibly busy, as it should be
towards the end of term. Thursday is our
Transition Information Afternoon from 3:30pm
and Big Gig practice 11:30am-3:00pm. Friday is the
Secondary street stall, Big Gig practice and WAP
Graduation.
Three students will be graduating from this school
in the near future. Each one of them has grasped
the opportunity public education provides and
should be immensely proud of themselves. Not
every student receives a HSC and it should be that
way, in my opinion. The certificate is a recognition
that the student has focus, excelled and achieved
not just turned up. I will be very proud of public
education on Friday at the Western Areas
Program graduation.
This week, three Stage 5 students, Nicholas
Williams, Will Longhurst and Jamie Harper will be
helping to construct a plane at Parkes Airport. This
is a fantastic opportunity for these students to
demonstrate their skills. The ultimate for me
would be an offer of employment for these talented students upon completion of school. This
would require them to move from Trundle to
train, but ultimately return with their 11 children
to enrol them in this school.
Transition is an important step both for those
beginning school and those moving to High School.
Trundle parents are lucky to have two excellent
schools to choose from. The problem is the lack of
children in our community transitioning to school.
Two schools whilst giving parents choice effectively
weaken each other because of the lack of available
children. Whilst people continue to support the
illogical idea that a town of less than 600 people
can support two schools, both will suffer. Without
the generous drought staffing supplement, this
school would be facing the very real possibility of
losing teachers. I am sure this will happen in the
near future because of the lack of children in our
community. Our primary section was near 70 two
years ago but two big Year 6 classes moving to
High School and small intakes mean, it will be
under 60 next year. All staff at this school, where
possible, live within our community so a job lost
will take considerable money from the local
economy.
NAPLAN results were received last week.
NAPLAN is one of the many diagnostic tools that
schools use to determine an area of school
performance, which is Literacy and Numeracy
development. This year’s results were extremely
pleasing especially the value added index. This is
the growth between testing periods. The school is progressing well towards the school strategic
direction of having more children in the top two
bands. I would especially like to mention the Year
3 results, which I believe are outstanding. An
indication of quality teaching when the skill level of
some students entering school is considered.
Across the whole school, NAPLAN results indicate
that the school is performing well. Congratulations
to all teachers, parents and students. However, I
stress that NAPLAN is just one tool to judge
school performance.
Last week, I watched a small segment of the Big
Gig production. I was impressed by the quality but
most of all I was impressed by the obvious
enjoyment students were obtaining from the
experience. Sister Veronica constantly told me,
school was not meant to be fun and all 5 foot 6 of
her made sure it was not. However, I disagree,
watching young people actively engaged and having
fun is one of the true pleasures of teaching.
The obvious question the various tables of
knowledge will ask is, how is practicing for Big Gig
learning? Students are learning to take risks, move
away from a comfort zone, commit to a goal,
cooperate with peers, follow instructions and
much more. These are all essential life and
employment skills and I believe are only taught
effectively outside the traditional classroom.
Last Thursday, I attended a brief special meeting of
the Trundle Progress Association. This was to
discuss the very real possibility of Trundle getting a
Skate Park. The goal is to raise $50 000 over a two
year period. This should be easy for a community
such as Trundle especially considering the lack of

youth cantered activities currently available in the
town. I will be speaking to our SRC to start
brainstorming ideas for fundraising. Also a
company wants to dig a big hole near Fifield, so
maybe they would be good for a bite as well. A
two billion dollar construction cost surely a few
thousand could fall our way for youth facilities.
Last week, I received a phone call from ZDF TV
Germany. They would like to come to Trundle to
film our school’s efforts to help people survive this
drought. This station is Germany’s public
broadcaster, except it has an audience of about 55
million people. The producer was not sure when
this could occur but it does not really matter. The fact that Trundle Central School is known in those
circles is a recognition that we must be making a
difference. Also last week, I received a call from
the producer of the Project on Channel 10. They
would also like to come to Trundle to film the
school. These enquires rarely come through
because of the nature of the news cycle. However,
I think it is vitally important that we keep the plight
of small country towns in the news.
Also last week, I met some people who came to
the school to tell me they changed their holiday
plans to come to Trundle after hearing our school
on the radio. They attended Bush Tucker and left
some much needed money behind in the town.
This is a proof that most people are willing to help
in times of need, they just need to be asked.
On Tuesday, I received a word that the school has
progressed to the final of the NSW / ACT
Regional Community Leadership Awards. This is an
outstanding achievement considering the number
of nominations. Our school has reached the last
four in regional NSW and ACT. Regional is defined
as outside Sydney and Canberra. My name is on
the certificate because I am ultimately responsible
for everything from ensuring the lawn is watered
to child protection and syllabus implementation
but this is recognition of team work and culture. I
am sure some members of staff and community have a passionate dislike for the way I run the
school but they have not let dislike for
personalities change or corrupt our core focus in
providing quality education. The community should
be very proud of this school as this is an
independent panel judging school performance.
The weather is starting to warm up and snakes will
soon be on the move. Each year we always have a
few visit our school but I fear this year will be
worse because of the prolonged drought. The
procedure for students is to tell a staff member
where the snake is and keep away. We will then
ask the snake to move to a more appropriate
location as per Departmental procedures.
Unfortunately, over the years we have had some
unfortunate accidents where shovels have slipped
and snakes have been fatally injured. Hopefully if
they quickly cooperate, this will not happen this
season.
Attendance at school is not optional. Under the Education Act 1990, students must attend school
every day the school is operational and for the
whole day. If parents do not actively encourage
children to attend school, the Department of
Education will take them to court. Thankfully this
school has excellent attendance overall but a few
students are starting to become a concern. If you
receive a letter indicating your child is in danger of
referral to the Department’s Home School Liaison
team this is the first step in the journey towards
court if things do not rapidly improve. If a student
is over seventeen years of age and not making a
genuine effort, they will be removed from the
school. I do not believe there is any grey area in
my stance of attendance.
The Woodbridge Cup remains in its rightful place
of Trundle. Holding a team to nil in a Grand Final
is a rare achievement for any side. The Boomers
proved that defence is often the best form of
attack, totally tackling Manildra out of the game in
the first half. This club obviously has a positive
culture and bring considerable enjoyment to their
followers. Some players are in a desperate need of
a calendar as Mad Monday seemed to have
continued for some well past Wednesday but
winning three in a row requires a considerable
celebration.
150 million dollar Powerball Jackpot. Money cannot buy happiness but I would be willing to give
it a try.

Ajax’s
Weekly Woof
Woof Woof Awards: 50 happy barks to the staff and students that
attended Movie night. Your positive happy
behaviour makes it a pleasure to come to this
school.
500 happy barks to Cooper Dunn for the massive
improvement in your reading. This is a credit to you and your teachers. This just proves with a bit
of confidence and support what you can achieve.
My human mother Anastasia was beaming with
pride. The only time I see her like that is when she
looks at Southo. She thinks he is a God because
she often as she leaves the room asks ‘Oh God,
what did I deserve to get you’ !!!
500 happy barks to the three students graduating
from High School. Southo said this is just another
rite of passage along life’s journey. I have no idea what that means but do not ever talk to him during
footy finals time, especially when the Sharks lose.
500 happy barks to the boys helping build the
plane. I remember when a REX propeller fell off so
tighten the bolts guys. Also having a display at the
air show is a great achievement. Life is about
grasping the opportunity so turn your ears on and
your mouths off. Great advice for the dogs in Long
Street, too.
500 happy barks to all students, teachers and
community who have contributed to the school
being a finalist for the regional leadership awards.
Leaders are only as good as those that are willing
to follow.
500 angry growls to Southo. Last week he was
putting something on the lawn that smelt like
chook poo. When I place a perfectly formed dog
poo on the oval he is cranky. Loose the double
standards boss man.
500 angry growls to those members of the
community who still do not support the town and
school. If you want to live in a second rate
backward town because it makes you feel safe and in your comfort zone it will happen if rural decline
keeps going because of lack of support to
communities and pressure on decision makers.
I am very jealous that some people have so many
friends in town. As I
travel around town I
see people that
always have regular
visitors. They only
drop in for a short
period of time but
they are regular
visitors every couple
of days. These must
be good friends to
visit so often. What
a strong community
we have.
Until next week, Ajax
Bark with laughter with Ajax:

CWA Country of Study Day
Last Tuesday, the students from Year 3-6 walked to
the CWA Hall to participate in the Country of
Study Day. The students were entertained by Mrs
Kelly who had a very interesting PowerPoint to
share with the students. She showed them video
footage of village life in Papua New Guinea. The
students thoroughly enjoyed this talk.
All the students were presented with a
participation certificate and the winners of each
category were announced.
Thomas Sanderson won the Year 3/4 poster
competition and Lucy Hartig and Kayden
Charlton-Little achieved a Highly Commended in
the Year 5/6 PowerPoint competition.
Well done to all the students who entered this
competition.
Assembly Another fantastic assembly was held last Friday. For
this assembly, we decided to try using the Golf
Club as there is more room for parents and guests.
Our assemblies have become a popular event. The students thoroughly appreciated the attendance of
their parents, grandparents, siblings and friends.
Year 5/6 entertained us with ‘A Bad Case of
Stripes’ through readers theatre. Year 3/4 sang a
song ‘You’re Welcome’ and Year 1/2 opened and
ran the assembly and then presented a fantastic
‘Welcome to Country’, an acknowledgement to
country. K/1 then delighted us with Sea Otter
reports!

Hats Although Terms 2 and 3 are not part of our NO
HAT NO PLAY policy, we are recommending that
the students bring a hat on sport days and P.E. days
to reduce any risks of sunburn and windburn.
Please ensure your child has a hat for Friday sport.
WSSA Athletics Last Friday 6 students represented our school and
the Gobondery/NARRAF district at the WSSA
Athletics carnival in Dubbo. Vashti Williams,
Alice Bridger, Tyrone Kirk, Jessica Morgan, Mikayla
Penny and Narella Thornton-McKellar participated
with enthusiasm and a high level of sportsmanship.
Well done to all these students.

Secondary
This week we have Year 11 examinations. The
timetable has been distributed to students and
published in today’s newsletter. Students are
exempt from school when they do not have an
exam, but they are strongly encouraged to come to
school and make the most of the study
environment and access to teachers.
Friday is the Western Access Program Graduation
dinner in Parkes. This evening is a celebration of
student’s achievement in the whole program. As
always we are so proud of what our students have
achieved and the way they have achieved this. We
will also be having a final school assembly for our
students on the last Friday of term, which is
officially their very last day at school. The last
official celebration of Year 12 schooling will be our
local Year 12 dinner next term. Well done Year 12!
Speaking of Year 12 this week they will be baking
and selling cookies as a fund raiser. Love these fund
raisers!
We have our three students at the plane building in
Parkes this week. I am sure they are going to have
an amazing time and I look forward to seeing the
photos for this experience. Good luck Nick, Will
and Jamie, and thanks to Mr Southon for the
transport early this morning.
Thursday our students will be involved in a ½ day
rehearsal for the Big Gig followed by a full day on
Friday. The P&C will be cooking sausages for the
whole school on Friday, so don’t forget to bring a
dollar for a sausage sandwich.
Congratulations to the students who have come so
far already. Your hard work and perseverance is
amazing to watch. Also well done and great job to
Mrs Sanderson and Mrs Gray for the organisation
and passion, as well as the countless hours outside
of school, which is shaping this to be a fantastic
show!
As always if there are any questions in regards to
Secondary matters please contact me at school.
