Name Function Location

Stores Memory, Controls movement

Top of Brain

Coordination center Back of Brain

Sorts and Sends Data to rest of brain

Middle of brain

Central Nervous System

• Made up of the:– Brain– Spinal cord

The Brain

• Coordinates body activities • Divided into two parts-

1. Forebrain2. Hind brain

**Surrounded by an outer covering: Cerebral Cortex**

Forebrain

• Made up of the– Thalamus– Hypothalamus– Cerebrum

Cerebrum

• Largest part of the brain• Memory is stored• Movements are controlled• Impulses from the senses are interpreted.

Hippocampus

• Helps to organize and store memories• Organizes Emotional Responses

Thalamus

• Sorts data and sends to other parts of the brain

Hypothalamus

• Your daily rhythms (sleeping)– Thirst– Temperature

Hindbrain

• Made up of the:– Brainstem– Cerebellum

Cerebellum

• Interprets stimuli from eyes, ears, muscles• Controls voluntary muscle movements• Maintains muscle tone• Helps maintain balance

Brain Stem

• Connects brain to spinal cord• Made up of the midbrain and the pons,– Act as pathways connecting various parts of the

brain with each other– And the Medulla • controls involuntary actions

The Spinal Cord

• Extension of the brain stem• Bundles of neurons that carry impulses from

all parts of the body to the brain and from the brain to all parts of your body

Cerebral Cortex

• Outer covering to the cerebrum• Higher Level thinking• Divided into Lobes– Frontal– Parietal– Temporal– Occipital

Corpus Callosum

• Connects hemispheres• Supports communication between

hemispheres

“Connects left brain to right”

So what?

• So your brain does all of this great stuff but how does it communicate with the rest of your body?

• OBJ: Quiz, NotesWhile both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the

summer each year, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game-male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers until after they give birth in the spring.

“The future depends on what we do in the present.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Reflex• A reflex is an involuntary, or automatic, action

that your body does in response to a stimulus

• A reflex action often involves a very simple nervous pathway called a reflex arc.

Reflex Arc• A reflex arc starts off with receptors being

excited. They then send signals along a sensory neuron to your spinal cord, where the signals are passed on to a motor neuron. As a result, one of your muscles or glands is stimulated.
