Our centennial theme--Honoring the Past, Embracing
the Future-- is on my mind. I like it because we shouldhonor those who devoted their lives to Christ and his
church. We should honor those who left us this great
legacy we call Tyler Street. I also like it because it directs
our focus forward to the future. Perhaps the greatest way
Embracing the Future NOW(Part 1)
(FUTURE continued on page 2)
to honor our past is to make sure Tyler Street has a great future.
Most churches are pretty good about honoring the past. Embracing the future seems
to be the challenge. I believe many churches fail to embrace the future because they
view it as something far off. They wait for the future to arrive. Yet the future is now!
At a recent clergy retreat, Pastor Paul Rasmussen shared principles for reaching
people for Christ. Paul serves on the pastoral staff of Highland Park United Methodist
Church and leads the dynamic Cornerstone worship community. In addition, he was
instrumental in leading the effort to revitalize Munger Place, which has now become
a thriving congregation and a second campus of Highland Park.
At the retreat Paul shared several principles which have proven fruitful. Some
come from his own experiences, while some he gleaned from the experiences of other
leaders. The principles offer insight and they can incite ().
This month I want to simply introduce them. Beginning next month I will go into
more detail. The principles are:
1. To reach people no one else is reaching, we have to do things nobody else is
doing.
2. Never let the resources dictate the vision.
3. When launching ministries, evaluate all assumptions.
4. Question the Values: What do we value?; What do our actions say we value?;
What should we value?
5. We are determined to be fundamentally preoccupied with those we are trying to
reach rather than with those we are trying to keep.
6. What do I believe is impossible to do in my field, but if it could be done would
profoundly affect my field?
7. If your memories exceed your dreams, your end is near.
