U’ FOOD & DRINK
MAGAZINE
Presented by Oliver Lakey
The brief given to me by the Northern echo was to produce a newspaper or magazine, of my choice, that has to be
founded by self advertising and aimed at a target audience of 16-25.
Other magazine’s that
feature food and drink:
•Olive • Good food
• Great British food
• Delicious
• Morrison's
NONE cater towards the
younger ages. The typical Target
audience is 30+
My product is aimed at the university students, aged 18-24 I believe there is a gap in the market for this kind of magazine.
My magazine is going to be FREE,
so it will be totally self founded by
advertising.
Why food and drink?•I love cooking•My mates come back from university and tell me what they eat.
AUDIENCE RESEARCH
• Most students tend to spend between £4-£20 on take out food a week!Averaging at £15!
• Most students live off microwave meals, instead of cooking for them self's.
• 70% of students mainly live off pasta while at university
• 60% of students spend between £10 and £25 on booze when out.
• 10% of people said they have never cooked
I did this to look at the behavioural habits of my TA
AUDIENCE RESEARCH With my target audience in mind, being students at university they live
on a budget. So paying for anything, (apart from booze) is not taken lightly.
My 3 major Design aims :• mature • contemporary • modern
Aimed towards Rahs & leading edge to encourage others to pick up the magazine and follow the trend
Both male and female
5 main university's in north east• University of Sunderland•University of Teesside, Middlesbrough•Durham University•Newcastle University•Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne
Aprox total 120,000 students
The problem this causes is that the magazine is not going to have any income from sales. So advertising is the most important aspect
Target of 11,000 students
PCCWhen creating any magazine you have to follow the code of
conduct of the PCC. Here are some guide lines I might have to follow;
Accuracy
I) The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information, including pictures.
Opportunity to replyA fair opportunity for reply to inaccuracies must be given when reasonably called for.
Confidential sources
Journalists have a moral obligation to protect confidential sources of information.
GENRE INFORMATION
When looking at the genre research I conducted:
•No food or drink magazines where in the top ten for any category
•Younger people are reading mainly gossip magazines, music, car mags and gaming magazines
•I want to break this trend! Desire barrier
Action barrier
•I will adapt and mimic the way in which food recipes are layout out.
• I won’t follow the typical traits of food magazines talking about where food is sourced. I will have articles that students can relate to.

MOCK UPS To see what my target audience thought of a potential article I
could feature. Whether they liked the language used, tone, the reading speed and the narrative.
As well as a possible design for the pages. Colour scheme Images layout
This would also give me vital information about the genre choice. To see if my TA would be interested in my idea, and would pick up one if they came across it.

OUTLINE OF IDEA my idea is to create a modern contemporary food & drink magazine, catered
towards university students aged 18-24
•I want to get students cooking for themselves
• eating more healthier foods
• feature drinks/ cocktails that they can make at home
•Featuring topics that relate to university students lifestyles
