U:4A&E=Accidents and

emergencies

Background:

What kind of cases come to A&E departments ??!

1-victims of road traffic accidents.

2-Violent crimes .

3-Accidents at home

4-suicide attempts .

5- self-harming .

6-Contact with toxic

chemicals &

radiation .

7- burns .

8- near drowning .

9- hypothermia .

*** A&E departments also fill up with people who should not really be there-people with minor injuries like sprains (sudden or severe twisting of a joint) , cuts , grazes (scratches) .

Q: When is an accident an emergency ??!!..

1- Overdose or poisoning .

2- loss of consciousness .

3- Chest pain lasting fifteen minutes or more .

A process to detedrmine who is a priority and needs to be treated immediately, and who can wait .

One method is to color patients like this:

- Red=Patients who need immediate surgery or other life-saving action .

Patients who are stable but who will need hospital care .

- green=

Patients who will need to see a doctor, but not immediately .

Patients who only require first aid and home care .
