DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
Industrial Hygiene Division
We provide a myriad of Industrial Hygiene Services to the UAMS campus. Many of these functions include a respiratory protection program, an exposure assessment and control program, biosafety cabinet certification, ergonomic evaluations and indoor air quality evaluations. All of these services can be provided by private industrial hygiene firms on a consulting basis.
• Required by OSHA
• One Masters level and one Bachelors level industrial hygienist
• OH&S Fee: No charge to departments
• Outside hourly rate: $125 per hour
Example: OH&S performs indoor air quality evaluations which take approximately 8 hours of an IndustrialHygienist's time, for which a private firm would charge $1,000. OH&S averages about 4 such studies eachmonth.
Asbestos Removal
The UAMS Physical Plant hazmat team is certified to remove asbestos on the UAMS campus. The OH&S Environmental Programs Manager is certified as an asbestos inspector, and thus is qualified to plan, manage and clear asbestos removal projects in-house.
• Required by Federal Law under certain circumstances
• Function requires 4-8 hours to perform depending on scope of job
• OH&S saves UAMS $500 to $1,000 on every asbestos removal project
• Outside hourly rate: $125 per hour

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
Hazardous Chemical Waste Management & Disposal
Having a qualified chemical/environmental programs manager in OH&S (Louis Kiene, M.S. Environmental Programs Manager) presently saves UAMS nearly $50,000 per year in hazardous waste disposal costs alone.
• The solvent profiling/bulk solvent disposal program conducted by Mr. Kiene reduces costs approximately 90% over the commercial lab pack alternative. Lab solvents comprise our largest single chemical waste stream (approximately 15,000 lbs per year). The bulk solvent program saves UAMS approximately $30,000 per year.
• Pursuit of alternate disposal methods for non-RCRA waste, acid/base neutralization (performed in house) and CHEMSHARE (transfer of useable reagents to other on-campus researchers) results in an additional savings of $17,500 per year.

Our Buildings Continue to Age:
Buildings are constructed with a life expectancy of 20 years. Beyond that point, the systems are prone to failure, and repairs become unavoidable and expensive. Listed below are some of the Campus buildings that are over 20 years old and are overdue for extensive renewal or replacement.

The following buildings, currently under construction. will add to the Capital Renewal/Deferred Maintenance backlog:
• Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute (225,000 s.f.)
• Biotechnology Building (16,000 .s.f.)
• College of Public Health (120,000 s.f.)

What should we do?• Day by day, our facilities continue to age as new ones are being
constructed…
• The National Average for Capital Renewal/Deferred Maintenance for Medical Universities is 4% of the Current Replacements cost.
• Currently, the Capital Renewal/Deferred Maintenance liability for UAMS stands at approximately $27 million.
• We must start budgeting for Capital Renewal/Deferred Maintenance today. Without adequate funding the problems will continue to grow.
