Not just the furnace,

but the water heater

too -- set it at 130 to

140 degrees. Turn the

setting to low or off

when you leave for the

weekend or for a long

vacation, and then put

a note on your bath-

room mirror so you’ll

remember to turn it

up when you return.

Washers can use more

than 50 gallons of water

per load, so avoid

washing a lot of small

loads whenever possible.

Also, be sure to choose

the

lowest level of water

needed for each load,

use warm water instead

of hot, and set the rinse

cycle to use cold water

ENERGY USE

Homes built with U-Panel™ walls require about 44% less energy to heat and 32%

less energy to cool than a comparable wood-frame house, based on a study of 58

single-family homes located throughout the U.S. and Canada

STATS ON CONCRETE BUILT HOMES

2

“Green Goals, Think Unitech”

In 2005, concrete homes accounted for nearly 18% of all new single-family detached homes, up from 16.3% in 2004, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Portland Cement Association (PCA)

Greater comfort and quiet. Those who live in ICF homes say the absence of cold drafts and unwanted noise are the biggest pluses, even topping the energy-saving benefits.

Fire resistant. Insurance companies recognize concrete as being safer than any other form of construction when fire threatens a home.

Pest proof- concrete is an unappealing food source for termites, carpenter ants or rodents that often dine on or reside in wood-framed walls.

One out of every six new houses built in the U.S. are now made of concrete. . .

Less repair and maintenance. They are not vulnerable to rot or deterioration as is untreated lumber.

As the interest in “Green Building” grows, building rating systems such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) have emerged as one way to rate the environment impact of construction. These rating systems are founded on the four guiding principles of green building
