Executive Summary TheUFAISTEAM:Together,WEAchieveMore Eachyear,AISstrivestosupportitsmembersontheireducationalandprofessionaljourney.WehelpmoldourmembersintoconfidentandsuccessfulInformationSystemsprofessionalsbyprovidingenrichingevents,hands-ontechnicalandprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopsandaplatformtoengagewiththeirbroaderprofessionalnetwork.Thisyear,aswebuiltuponthefoundationcreatedbythosebeforeus,ourfocusshiftedfromone’spersonaljourneytothecollaborativeeffortandsuccessoftheteam.Wefoundthatwhenwebuildgoodsupportsystemsandavenuesforourmemberstolearnfromeachother(bothcurrentandpast),weallsucceed.Wewouldliketotouchonafewoftheopportunitiesforcollaborationweintroducedthisyear:Weaddedanewaspecttoourportfolio,AlumniRelations,toencouragealumniengagement,strengthenexistingtieswithpastmembers,andfosternewrelationshipsbetweencurrentandpastUFAISmembers.TheAlumniRelationsroleintroduced:

WealsoencouragedcorporatecollaborationandpartneredupwithGE,SSPandPwCtoprovidetechnicalandprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesforourmembers,whichincluded:

Thisyear,ourmembersgrewpersonallyandprofessionally,sharedtheirknowledgeandtheirtriumphs,andsuccessfullyachievedtheirgoals.Noneoftheseaccomplishmentswouldhavebeenpossiblewithoutthecollectiveeffortofourteam.Weoweoursuccesstothosethatputtheirfaithinus,andtraveledthejourneyalongwithus.ToUFAIS,andthefutureofInformationSystems, JustinRatcliffe FaridaKarim weleaveyouingoodhands. Professional Development CreatingaHolisticCandidate:Leadership+SoftSkillsintheField

Ace the Showcase AcetheShowcasewascreatedtohelpmemberspreparefortherecruitmentprocessatCareerShowcase.Itisaneventthatisheldtwiceayear,beforetheCareerResourceCenter’sCareerShowcaseeverysemester.Theeventwasasmallgroup,round-robinlayoutwithfourfocusareas:professionaletiquette,companyresearch,professionaldressandlayoutoftheshowcase,andtalkingwithrecruiters.Thegroupswereabouteightmemberseach,whichallowedforgreaterdiscussionandquestionaskingwithinthegroups.Oncethegroupsfinishedrotatingthrougheachtopicstationexecutiveboardmembersworkedonbasicresumecritiquing.Theoverallintentofthiseventwastopromoteconfidenceinmembersastheyenterthecampusrecruitingseason,especiallyforthosethathavenothadsuchexposure.

Mock Mixer MockMixerishostedtwiceayear,theweekbeforeAIS’sPre-Showcase Corporate Mixer. The event allows members topracticetalkingwithexecutiveboardmemberswhoareactingas recruiters. The event is set upwith the same number ofmock recruiters as actual companies that attended the Pre-ShowcaseCorporateMixerand the table layout is similar tothe actual venue, so members were able to get realisticpractice.Thispracticerunpromotesconfidenceinmembersastheyfeelmorefamiliarwiththerecruitingprocess.

Technical Interviewing Workshop by SSP SSP,aGator100companyspecializinginGIS,hostedahybridinformationsessionandprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopintheSpringsemester,thataddressedbothhowtostandoutinatechnicalinterviewandinformedourmembersaboutthevariousopportunitieswithinSSP.Moreoftenthannot,ourmembersencountertechnicalinterviewsduringtheirofficevisitsanddonotknowtheproperwaystotacklethem.SSPprovidedourmembersa‘peakbehindthecurtain’onhowtechnicalcompaniesconducttheseinterviewsaswellasallowedattendeestoworkthroughlogicquestionsthataresimilartotheonesgivenduringthehiringprocess.Theworkshoptaughtourmembershowtoapproachthesequestionsandtheimportanceofexplainingtheirthoughtprocessoutloudtotheinterviewerinordertoacetheirtechnicalinterviews!

Ace the Internship: Member Intern Panel AcetheInternshipwasdesignedformemberswhoarepreparingtotakeontheirsummerinternshipwithvariouscompanies.Thelayoutwasapaneldiscussionthatfeaturedmemberswhohadpreviouslyheldsummerinternships.Frequentlyaskedquestionswerecreatedpriortotheeventtofacilitatediscussionbetweenthepanelandmembers,althoughmemberswerealsoencouragedtoaskquestions.Theeventaimstohelpmembersachievesuccessduringtheirsummerinternships,whichoftenleadtofull-timeoffers.

Summer Plans by Leigh Graves Hall, GBCS InSpring2016,AISpartneredwithHoughGraduateBusinessCareerServicestohostaSummerPlanseventtocovertopicsthatincluded:creatingyourowninternship,searchingforrelevantshort-termwork,self-learningandcontinuingyoureducation,andpreparingforthenextrecruitmentseason.ThiseventfocusedonhelpingmemberswhohadnotsecuredaninternshipyetforthesummerandwereunsureofwhatstepstotakenowthatboththeFallandSpringCareerShowcasehadpassed.Throughoutthepresentationanddiscussion,theunderlyingmessagewasformemberstoremainpositiveandlookatalternativewaystogainexperience.

Project Management Workshop by GE IntheFallsemester,AISpartneredwithGEtohostaProjectManagementWorkshopwithLouOrtega,MattAusman,andJamieVoisin.TheGEprofessionalswalkedourmembersthroughtheprojectmanagementlifecyclewithanexamplecontainingrealworldapplication.Thesessiontaughtourmembersaboutthemanypracticalskills,techniquesandperspectivesinvolvedinanITprojectanditstimelinefromplanningatthebeginningstagestoaccountingforpotentialrisksandcompletingriskmanagement.

Technical Skills Workshops: Python, VBA, Linux ViatheISOMprogram,ourmemberslearnafewprogramminglanguages,learntouseSolverwithExcelandlearnhowtocreatedatabasesinAccess.However,unlesstheytaketheITtrack,theymaynotlearnhowtomixtheirprogrammingskillswiththeirAccessdatabasesandoutsideofJavaandC#,theywouldhavetopickupotherprogramminglanguagesandskillsontheirown.IntheFallsemester,MichaelCordoba,anISOMgradandcurrentDeloitteTechnologyAdvisoryAssociate,taughtourmembersthebasicsofPythonandhowtoextractandmanipulatedatausingthepopularprogramminglanguage.

IntheSpringsemester,YoelLapscher,anISOMstudentwithpriorexperiencewithP&G,hostedaVBAWorkshopforAISmemberstoutilizeandapplytheirprogrammingskillsinExcel.

AlsointheSpringsemester,JixinFeng,aPhDcandidatefromUF’s ECE Department, gave AIS members a crash course onusing Linux with Command Line and taught us how to useterminaltofigureoutwhatexactlyhappensbehindthesceneswhenyoumanagefilesonacomputer.Utilizingbasicterminaloperations, our members were able to manage a remotecomputer using SSH (secure shell), transmit files throughnetworksanddownloadcoderepositoriesfromGitHub.

Bridging the Gap: Alumni Seminar Series InSpring2016,AISalsolaunchedBridgingtheGap,anAlumniSeminarSeriestoreconnectalumniwithcurrentAIS/ISOMstudentsandhelpshedlightonlifepostISOM.TheseriesconsistedofsevenalumniinvaryingrolesthatcametogethertoanswerquestionsontheirexperiencesintheworkfieldandhowtheircareershaveevolvedpostISOM.ThegoaloftheeventwastoprovideaplatformforcurrentmemberstointeractwithandreachouttoAlumniwhilelearningaboutthedifferentcareerpossibilitiesaftergraduation.ThethreemainthemesoftheeventwerePersonalBrand,LeadershipintheFieldandGoals&Aspirations.

Professional Etiquette by Dr. Berry Eachsemester,Dr.Berry,aprofessorwithintheHoughGraduateSchoolofBusinessandheadofBerryandAssociates(acommunicationsconsultingpractice),presentsonprofessionaletiquetteandthenotionofglobalcitizenship.Herpresentationincludesadviceforprofessionaldevelopment,corporatedining,andbodylanguage.Throughherhands-onpracticeexercisesandresources,sheensuresthatourmembersarepreparedtosuccessfullypresentthemselvesattheCareerShowcase,withintheGraduateBusinessSchoolandintheprofessionalworldoutsideofUF.

Community Service HelpingtheCommunityandSharingtheMagicofTechnology UFAIS’sCommunityServiceisourversionofCorporateCitizenshipandResponsibility.Throughengagementwiththegreatercommunity,ourmembersgainvaluableskillsandexperiencewhilegivingbacktomeaningfulcauses.ThisSpring,UFAIShostedfoureventsdirectlyfocusedonbetteringthecommunity.

Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County OurmemberspridethemselvesonbeingabletogivebacktotheGainesvillecommunity,especiallyitsyouth.ThispastMarchwevisitedtheWoodlandParkBoysandGirlsClubofAlachuaCounty.EngagingwiththeyouthattheBoys&GirlsClubenabledourmemberstoparticipateinmentorshipoutoftheprofessionalrealmandallowedourmemberstogivebacktotheyouthofGainesvillebyhelpingwiththeirhomework,caringfortheircommunitygardenandevenplayinginteractivegameswiththemoutside.

Jungle Friends Monkey Sanctuary

Whodoesn’tloveworkingwithanimals?Especiallyifthoseanimalsare“adorable”littlemonkeys.AgroupofourmembersspenttheirSaturdaywiththeJungleFriendsPrimateSanctuary,asanctuaryformonkeyswhoare retired from lab research, ex-pets, ormonkeysbroughtinfromabusivehomes.Ourmembers helped lend a hand to repairvarious sanctuaries, clean landscapes in themonkeys’habitat,andchopproduceforthemonkeys’ diets. The activities, althoughfocusing primarily on hard labor, reallybrought out the leadership qualities in ourmembers.Whether itwas taking charge onmoving the habitat, directing the group onwhentolift,orkeepingupeveryone’smoralethroughout the day with positivity andlaughter,everyonehadachancetoshowcasetheirstrengthsandbondasagroup.

Relay for Life AtRelayforLifeevents,communitiesacrosstheglobecometogethertohonorcancersurvivors,rememberlovedoneslost,andfightbackagainstadiseasethathasalreadytakentoomuch.Ourmemberswereabletoraise$300withinathree-dayperiod.Thefundswecollectedgotosurvivingfamilymemberswhowereaffectedbythediseaseandalsotowardsresearchthatwillhelp make a difference in the fight againstcancer.RelayforLifeteamscampoutovernightandtaketurnswalkingorrunningaroundatrackorpathatalocalhighschool,park,orfairground.AtUF,thisyear’sRelayforLifewasheldatFlavetField. In addition to donating and raising fundsforthecure,ourmembersparticipatedinmanyotheractivitieshostedbyotherUForganizationstocontinuethefundraisingeffort.RelayforLifeis a great opportunity for our members tosupport each other, those affected by cancer,andthecommunityatlarge.

Data Extraction & Visualization Case Competition with PwC Everyyear,AISpairsupwithacompany(itwasAccentureintheFallsemester)tohosttheirCaseCompetition.ThisSpringsemester,wewantedtotakethecompetitionintoourownhandsanddecidedthatitwouldbeneattonotonlyhaveourmemberscompetetocreatesomethingofvalueutilizingtheskillswehavelearnedthroughouttheyearbutalsotocreatesomethingthatcouldbebeneficialtoalocalnonprofitorganization.AISdecidedtobuilduponourpartnershipwiththeBoys&GirlsClubtohelpthemwithtrendanalysis,dataevaluationandvisualization.Technologyisapowerfultoolthatcanbeveryinstrumentalincreatingsocialimpact.Thiscasecompetitiongaveourmemberstheopportunitytoreallyputtheirtechnicalandpresentationskillstothetestforthegreatergood.Thewinningteamalsowon$50giftcardsfromPwC!

External Fundraising: Corporate Sponsorship Thisyear,AISrestructuredoursponsorshippackagesandwewerefortunateenoughtohavetwoCorporateSponsors.BothAirWatchandProtivitinotonlyrecruitedheavilyfromAISandtheISOMprogrambutalsomadegenerousdonationstosupportouractivitiesandtheprofessionaldevelopmentofourmembers.Theirdonationsaccountedfor18%ofourFallrevenueand10%ofourfiscalyeartotal.

Internal Fundraising: Bake Sales The main source of internal fundraising in both the Fall andSpringsemestersconsistedofbakesalefundraisingeventsputonbymembersofAISincooperationwiththeHoughGraduateSchoolofBusinessattheUniversityofFlorida.TheFallBakeSalewastitled“GlobalGoodies”andencouragedmembersofAIStobakea treat fromtheirhomecountryandbring it in tosell tograduatestudents to raisemoney forAISandaportionof theproceeds alsowent to the Boys&Girls Club in the form of adonation.IntheSpring,anothersuccessfulbakesalewasputonand it is our intention to continue to host a bake sale once asemesterasarecurringeventformembersofAIS.

Local Business Initiatives AISstrivestomaintainprofessionalrelationswithcompaniesthatfosterthegrowthanddevelopmentofourmembers.Thisyearwesoughttocreatemeaningfulrelationshipswithlocalbusinessesinordertoencouragepartnershipsthatwouldprovidecontinualbenefitsforourmembers.OurmostsuccessfullocaloutreachwasworkingwithDoughReligion,anewrestauranttotheGainesvilleareathatislocatedneartheUniversityofFloridacampusandhasatargetdemographicofstudents.WemanagedtogetfavorableratesforsocialeventsandfeelconfidentthatourrelationshipwithDoughReligionwillcontinuefortheforeseeablefuture.

Membership Thisyear,wefocusedonbuildinguponUFAIS’sbrandofqualityresourcesandeventstocreatevalue.OurmemberbasetypicallydeclinesseverelyafterthetraditionalFallrecruitingseasonisover.Inordertoretainaconsistentmemberbasethroughouttheyear,wehaveimplementedtoolstomaximizeefficiencyandaddedopportunitiestokeepmembersengaged,bothaftertheyhavesecuredajob/internshiporhavegraduated.

Square Card Readers InordertofacilitatethecollectionofduesandreimbursementofpaymentswehavesuccessfullyutilizedSquareCardReadertoenablememberstoconvenientlyandsecurelyusetheircreditordebitcardtomakepayments.Theuserinterfaceissimplisticandhastheaddedbenefitofacceptingallmajorcardcarriers.TheSquareReaderalsohasthebenefitofconnectingdirectlytotheAISbusinesscheckingaccountandenablingadirectdepositoffundstotheaccount.WereceivedapositiveresponsetotheSquareReaderfromourmemberswhofoundittobemuchmoreconvenientthathavingtopayincashorbywritingacheck.

Monthly Social Hours Ourmonthlysocialhourscreateaplatformformemberstoengageinmentorshiprelationships,networkwiththeirpeers,andconnectwithISOMstudentsfromdifferentsemesters.TheyareheldatadifferentlocationeverymonthandareidentifiedbyUFAISname-tags.Typically,wehavetwodifferentcolorname-tagstosignifythosethatareinterestedinprovidingmentorshipandthosethatareseekingmentors.Thesocialhoursprovidemembersanavenuetoremainengagedeveniftheyhaveattendedourprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopsandeventsinprevioussemesters.

Alumni Database TheAlumniDatabaseisanotheravenueformemberstoremainengaged.ItconsistsofacomprehensivelistofUFAISISOMAlumniandincludesinformationsuchastheircurrentposition,employer,location,andcontactinformation.Thedatabasecurrentlyspans10yearsasitgoesasfarbackas2006-whenISOMwasstillDIS.TheaimforthisdatabaseistoprovidememberswitharesourcetoreachouttoandnetworkwithAlumniandallowAlumnitoremaininvolvedwithUFAISandtheISOMprogrampost-graduation.

Beginning of the Semester Socials: Shucks & Dough Religion Atthebeginningofeachsemester,afterourfirstGeneralBodyMeeting,AIShostsabacktoschoolsocialinMidtown(duetoitsproximitytotheHoughGraduateSchoolofBusiness).TheFallsocialwasheldatShucksandourSpringsocialwasheldatooZooandDoughReligion(oneofourlocalbusinesspartners).Thesesocialsenablenewmemberstomeet,returningmemberstocatchupaftertheholidaybreakandeveryonetohaveagoodtime!

Potluck + Game Night Tohelpfosterunityamongstourdiversegroupofmembers,ourchapterhostedacompetitivepotluckandgamenightintheSpringsemester.Individualswereabletobringdishesfromtheirhomecountrytosharealittleoftheirculturewhichbroughtourmembersclosertogetherbysharingtheirfoodandheritagewiththeirpeers.Byengaginginfungames,theygottobondoverMafia,CardsAgainstHumanity,andmore!

Communications Thewebsiteanddifferentcommunicationtoolswereusedtoimproveourweb-omnipresence.Nomatterthenumberofeventsheld,ifourmembersarenotawareofthetimeandplaceoftheeventnoonewillturnupandtheeventorganizedwillnotbesuccessful.Toimproveuserengagement,thewebsitewasupdatedwithsomesnapshotsoftheevents.Toservethepurposeofcommunicatinginformation,ourprimarytoolswereFacebookandtheUFAISListServ.

Website UFAIS.COM Ourwebsiteprovidesthememberswithinformationregardingtheclub,eventsorganizedanddifferentcompaniesthattypicallyrecruitfromourprogram.Thewebsiteisconstantlyupdatedwithdescriptionsoftheeventsthathaveoccurredthroughoutthesemester.Thesedescriptionsincludeablurbabouttheactivitiesthattookplacealongwithphotographedmomentsthatwerecapturedduringtheevent. Social Media Facebook: Facebookisthemostpopularsocialmediatooltoday,thusUFAIShasagrouponFacebookinwhichnewandoldmemberscaninteract.OnourprivateFacebookpage,wecanpostpicturesandrecapsofevents,andalsosharearticlesfoundontheweb.Wheneverwehaveanevent,wecreateaFacebookeventwithabriefdescriptionoftheeventandthetimeandlocationoftheeventandinviteallactivemembersinthegroup.Facebookthensendspersonalinvitestoallmembersandweareabletogaugehowmanypeoplearecomingandalsocreateaspaceforpeopletoaskanyquestionsorpostanyremindersspecifictothatevent.
