Ugandan Scientifi c Visit

2015

The Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) organized and conducted a scientifi c visit for a group of professionals from Uganda at Texas A&M University in July. The purpose of this program was to provide the participants with a comprehensive introduction to nuclear power so that they will have a good understanding of the many elements and dimensions of implementing a nuclear power program and the technical and policy issues surrounding them. It was jointly sponsored by the Ugandan government and International Atomic Energy Agency.

The program included presentations on basic nuclear power plant systems, operations, and safety culture needs, as well as policy issues related to nuclear regulation, human resource development, nuclear waste management, and national

infrastructure. Speakers for the program were subject matter experts from all aspects of nuclear power drawn from industry, utilities, regulatory agencies, and academia. At Texas A&M, the participants visited the Nuclear Science Center and the Cyclotron Institute.

The training program also included a trip to the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company in Wadsworth, Texas, where the participants met with the company leadership, management, and staff involved in all aspects of nuclear power generation. They also met with County Judge Nate McDonald of Matagorda County to see how local governments are integrated into a nuclear power program, and toured the nuclear power training facility at Wharton County Junior College.

The participants included both engineers and scientists, as well as business and fi nancial professionals, who are involved in evaluating the possibility of developing nuclear power in Uganda. This training program will aid Uganda in understanding the steps necessary to establishing a safe and effective utilization of nuclear energy.
