Introduction

came from China in 9th century

Technique

First step- Drawing

- drew in water ink

- made several sheets of tracing (hanshita)

Second step- Carving

- glued the hashinta on the several blocks of wood

- cut away the white area

Third Step- Printing

- set of woodblocks were inked in different colors

- some would printed more than once

Famous Types of Ukiyo-e

Bijinga- women who were in low caste ex. prostitute or waitress- most of the them have small eyes and small lips and wore kimono
