FACT:

Peerworkisdistinctandseparatefromprofessionallydeliveredclinicaltreatment.

Peerworkersareviewedasavital,unique,andautonomouscomponentoftheaddictionsserviceworkforce,andtheessentialqualitiesthattheybringarevaluedastransformative,ratherthanmerelyadditive.

o Mostpeerrecoverycoachesserveinthefieldasvolunteerswhilealsoworkingatapayingjob,andsomevolunteerforalimitedtimeperiodasawayofstrengtheningtheirownrecovery.

o Manypeerrecoverycoachesdonotdesirefull-timeemploymentorpayforcoachingbecausetheyhaveotherjobsorprofessions.

o Becomingcertified,therefore,isnotaninterest.

MYTH: “THEY ARE TAKING OUR JOBS”

o Instead,thesepeerrecoverycoachesopttoworkasapeerto“giveback”asacomponentoftheirownrecoveryplan.
