Intro to Ecology
1. Ecology is the study of the relations of _______________ to one
another and to their physical _______________________.
2. The survival of species is dependent on other living organisms and
nonliving components, which is known as ____________________.
Humans need plants to produce ______________ and plants need the
____________________ we produce.
3. An _________________ is a scientist who studies ecosystems.

4. The ________________ includes all the living things on earth. BIOSPHERE
What are the other
“spheres” on Earth?
Crust to Core
GEOSPHERE
Layer of gases

ATMOSPHERE
HYDROSPHERE
All the water
BIOSPHERE
All living things
5. An _________________ includes all the organisms and nonliving
environment found in a particular place.
6. The ________________ includes only the living things in an area,
while a ________________ refers to all the members of one species in
the area.

Freshwater – Ponds, rivers,

#7 - Levels of Organization

Only one thing ORGANISM
POPULATION All organisms of one species
8. The place where an organism lives is called its ____________. The
living parts are called ___________ factors, while the nonliving parts
are called __________ factors.
Which of these resources in the school garden are abiotic?
Soil Plants Flowers Water
Birds Insects Seeds Worms
Air Rocks Mulch Sunlight
HABITAT
BIOTIC
ABIOTIC
Add to notes:
A habitat provides
food, water, shelter, and space
9. The job or role of an organism within its environment is called its
__________.
10. What is the difference between a generalists and a specialist? Give
an example of each.
NICHE
Pigs would be generalist species since they eat a lot of different
things. Generalist species can survive in a variety of habitats.
A panda would be a specialist species since it eats only
bamboo. Specialist species are very sensitive to changes in
their habitats and would have a harder time surviving.

Ecology Unit Vocabulary Cards
As we discuss the terms during the unit, you will need to create a
vocabulary card for each one.
Front = Term + a memory clue
(pictures, words, etc.)

Glue the worksheet
on page 8 FAF Left
What makes a bug a bug?
1. What of these animals are bugs?
Monarch Centipede Snake Frog
Bird Earthworm Spider Roly poly (Pill bug)
Stink bug Wasp Grasshopper Bumble bee
Cicada Praying mantis Ladybug Aphid
Snail Millipede Slug Monarch caterpillar

How would we define a bug?
How many different populations are in the garden? ________
Arthropods Crustaceans Arachnids Insects Centipedes Millipedes
2. Each person will need a specific job:
Catchers – Need bug tongs and nets along with bug catching skills!
Helpers – Will hang out at the MAIN TABLE to transfers bugs to jars
or ziplocs for the photographers as well as keeps track of duplicate
bugs. They will also release all bugs before we come inside.
Photographers – Will hang out at the MAIN TABLE, use a smart
phone with good camera to take pictures – bugs only, and upload
images to Google Drive at the end of class.
NOTE: One photographer will travel around for pics of spiders,
caterpillars, and stinging insects that cannot be moved/caught.
We will change jobs for different blitzes!
3. Garden Rules
No pushing, shoving, or other unacceptable behaviors allowed.
Stay in the front yard area and do not cross the road, go into the ditch,
or in the driveway area.
Watch where you walk and stay off the plants we want to keep alive!
If you move a rock, put it back EXACTLY how you found it!
DO NOT move railroad ties!
Frog Pond Rules:
Stay off the rocks around the pond, stay out of the water, and don’t
throw rocks into the pond. Only capture bugs in the pond area if you
can get to them without stepping on the rocks or getting the net and
tools wet.
DO NOT move spiders, caterpillars, or stinging insects – leave them
where you find them. Your team can take a picture to use as “proof”
you found them.
Use the insect nets and bug tongs for bugs only – not fish, people,
birds, or any other animals. Be careful not to get the nets caught on
plants or weeds, get them dirty, or use the handle to dig in the dirt. The
same goes for the tongs and jars!
WARNING: If you cannot behave or use your time wisely, you will
be "benched" and have to sit while your classmates search for
critters. You will also earn a zero grade for the class activity!
