UNIT 10PERIOD 7
What we’ll know! The students will know the different type
and effects of ocean currents
Different types of ocean currents
Kuroshi Current: a warm ocean current that flows northward, then eastward on the west side of the Pacific Ocean
Alaska Current: a cold ocean current that flows northward, the westward towards Alaska
El Niño: an irregularly occurring and complex series of climate change affecting the equatorial pacific region
Deep circulation: current which sweep along the deep-sea floor
Different types of ocean currentsCont.
California Current: a cold ocean current that flows southward along the west coast of North America
What we’ll know! The students will know about the
geography of the ocean floor.
Mid Ocean Ridges Mid-ocean ridge systems are the largest
single volcanic feature on Earth. This is the place where the Earth’s crust
is spreading, creating new ocean floor and renewing the surface of the Earth.
The mid-ocean ridge consists of thousands of individual volcanoes or volcanic ridge segments which periodically erupt.
Deep Sea Trenches In the ocean there a few places on the
ocean floor they’re are unusually deep zones known as Deep Sea Trenches
They are long, narrow troughs that are the deepest parts of the Ocean.
Continental Margin The submerged shelf and slope that
forms the outer edges of the Earth’s major landmasses.
WWKThe
chilluns/students/nerds/whatever will know about the deep ocean and some life that lives down
there.
Deep ocean Many areas in the vast oceans of our big
planet have what we would call trenches, these trenches can lead to the darkest most deep black abyss anyone is likely ever to see. Much deeper than space if not physically then mentally seeing how there’s no star light in trenches. Not even the smallest smidgeon of sunlight. The deepest trench known is the Mariana trench in the pacific ocean. Abyss
‘Tis a vocab word.
Don’t forget it.
Dat life Most creatures that live in the deep
oceans are vile evil looking monstrosities that would chill you to the core. So I will just name a few and show you a picture of my personal favorite the cranchiid or deep sea, colossal, giant squid. A few other fish are the angler fish which use their light to attract their prey and the Gulper eels which have huge heads and mouths to easily catch and eat their prey. Cranchiid.
Remember it.
What we’ll know! The students will know how ocean
currents affect the climate.
Effects of ocean currents on the climate
Ocean currents influence the climate by transporting and storing heat from the sun.
When currents at the equator are heated, and start to flow to the higher latitudes, they begin to transport heat which, in turn, warms the air and blows over and warms nearby landmasses.
Colder currents cool the surrounding air and landmasses.
As a result, inland climates are vulnerable to extreme temperature, more so than coastal climates.
Effects of ocean currents on the climate cont.
More than half of all the heat that reaches the Earth from the sun is taken in by the ocean’s surface layer.
Currents that flow from the equator are warm and currents that flow from the poles are cooler.
KS Name two different types of currents.
