LET’S PLAY NINE: The Dodgers tonight begin a quick three-
game homestand with the first of three games against the NL
Central’s Cincinnati Reds. According to STATS, LLC, the Dodgers’
six-game winning streak over the Reds is their longest active streak
against any opponent. The Dodgers played their second-consecutive
extra-inning game yesterday, beating the Padres, 9-5, in 17 innings.
The five-hour, 47-minute contest was the fifth-longest in franchise
history and the longest by innings since 2007 (also at SD). Following
this short series, the Dodgers head out on a seven-game road trip to
New York (3 games) and Chicago (4).
Seven of the eight regulars in the Dodger lineup played all
17 innings in yesterday’s game: Chase Utley, Corey
Seager, Howie Kendrick, Adrián González, Joc
Pederson, Yasiel Puig and A.J. Ellis.
Dodger second baseman Chase Utley tied a Los Angeles
record for assists with 13, joining Davey Lopes (April 12,
1980, 17 innings at Houston). and Willie Randolph (Aug.
23, 1989, 22 innings at Montreal).
Howie Kendrick’s nine total bases (4-for-8, 2 2B, HR)
yesterday were one shy of the 2016 Dodger high, currently
held by Kiké Hernandez, who went 3-for-5 with a double
and two homers against the Giants on April 15.
Speaking of total bases, the Dodger record for total bases in
a game was set on this date in 2002 by Shawn Green. Green
set an ML record with 19 total bases and tied a Major League
mark by scoring six runs while becoming the 14th player in big
league history to hit four home runs in a game. In that contest,
a 16-3 victory over the Brewers in Milwaukee, the Dodgers
established a team record with eight home runs in the game.
ELECTION YEAR: All-Star balloting is underway online at
Dodgers.com/vote, where fans can cast their votes for starters a total
of 35 times with the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot,
including a maximum of five valid ballots cast in any 24-hour period.
THE PERENNIAL: Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw has been
named to the All-Star team in each of the past five seasons and is
well on his way to a sixth, perhaps as an NL starter for the very first
time. Tonight, Kershaw looks to continue his dominant May, with four
wins in four starts, a 0.82 ERA (3 ER/33.0 IP) and 48 strikeouts against
just one walk this month. Kershaw has already established a club record
with six consecutive starts with 10 or more strikeouts, striking out 68
and walking two over 48.0 innings in that span, and his six consecutive
starts with 10+ strikeouts and one or fewer walks are the most in the
Majors since at least 1913. With a 22.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio (88 SO,
4 BB), Kershaw is on pace for the highest mark in the modern era, far
outpacing Phil Hughes’ 11.63 mark with Minnesota in 2014. The MLB
record for consecutive double-digit strikeout games (single season) is
eight, shared by Chris Sale (May 23-June 30, 2015) and Pedro Martinez
(Aug. 19-Sept. 27, 1999). He could tie the NL record of seven tonight,
set by Arizona’s Randy Johnson April 13-May 13, 2001.
Kershaw leads the Majors with 88 strikeouts, a 0.70 WHIP,
70.0 innings and ranks among the big league leaders in wins
(6, T-6th), ERA (1.67, 3rd) and opponents’ batting average
(.181, T-4th).
The last pitcher to strike out more batters than Kershaw
through his first nine games in a season was Curt Schilling in
2002 (95).
Kershaw leads all active players (min. 1500 IP) in shutouts
(14), ERA (2.40), opponents’ batting average (.206), and
WHIP (1.02).
Dodger pitchers rank second in the Majors with 399
strikeouts, behind only Washington (412).
The Dodgers’ 3.05 ERA at home ranks fourth in the
National League and is more than a run better than their
road ERA (4.27, 11th).
SEEING RED: In the last 10 seasons, no one has played the Reds
better than the Dodgers:
Dodgers, Best Record vs. NL Opponent – Since 2006
vs. Cincinnati Reds 45-23 (.662)
Washington Nationals 37-22 (.627)
Pittsburgh Pirates 43-29 (.597)

a .300/.349/.563 slashline this month, going 24-for-80 with six
doubles, five homers and 11 RBI in 20 games. He ranks among the
National League May leaders in hits (24, T-10th), home runs (T-8th)
and slugging percentage (13th).

Thompson has hit six home runs this month, which ties for third in
the NL. Thompson has posted a .298/.377/.723 slashline in 15 May
games, going 14-for-47 with two doubles, and also ranking among
the NL leaders with 14 RBI (9th) and slugging percentage (.723, 1st).
Thompson is also hitting .341 (14-for-41) at Dodger Stadium.
According to Stats, LLC, Thompson and Corey Seager are
the first pair of Dodger rookies ever to hit five or more home
runs each in the same month.
SHUT THE DOOR: Kenley Jansen is tied for fourth in the Majors
with 13 saves, while allowing three runs in 19 appearances (1.50
ERA, 3 ER/18.0 IP) and limiting opponents to a .164 batting average
(10-for-61) with 20 strikeouts against just one walk.
With 155 career saves, Jansen is just six saves shy of Eric
Gagné’s club record.
GET FIT!: Tomorrow, more than 300 third and fourth graders at
Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School will welcome Dodger
catcher A.J. Ellis to their school to help conclude the New Balance
SparkStart Fitness Challenge, a program that challenged over 1,000
children in six cities across the country to participate in recess
activities and games and track their physical activity over a six-week
period. Ellis will be there from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and the school
is located at 1963 E 103rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90002.
SKIP THE CAR: On Friday, Metro officially completed the 15-
mile Expo Line between downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
The Expo Line is now a convenient and relaxing option for fans to
get to and from Dodger Stadium. Fans can gain access to the Metro
Expo Line from downtown L.A.’s 7th and Metro Center station,
transfer to the Red or Purple Line to Union Station and take the
Dodger Stadium Express bus service to the stadium. Complete
details on the Dodger Stadium Express services, route information
and helpful tips from Metro can be found by visiting
www.Metro.net/dodgers or by calling 323.GO.METRO.
WORTH NOTING: By defensive efficiency, which measures
turning balls in play into outs, the Dodgers are the second-best NL
team, trailing only the Cubs, with a 71.4% efficiency rating
according to Baseball-Reference.com.
The Dodgers have used 217 defensive shifts this year, tied
for the fourth-fewest among National League teams
according to FanGraphs.
SVS ON THE MEND: Scott Van Slyke (low back irritation) began
his rehab assignment yesterday with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga
and played 7.0 innings in right field while going 1-for-2 with a run
scored. Van Slyke is scheduled to play 9.0 innings at first base for
Triple-A Oklahoma City tomorrow.
