Afghanistan Renewable Energy Union(AREU) BACKGROUND

The AREU was established in 2013 and is duly registered with Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI).

It is governed by a board of seven members, and its work is executed by a proven administrative staff.

The AREU is structured as General Assembly, Board of Directors, Executive Board, Management team and monitoring team.

AREU boosts 52 members. AREU membership consists of a number of companies in the areas of solar, hydro, wind, biomass, geothermal, project development, equipment production and service provision sectors and specialist volunteer members from universities through out Afghanistan.

Members range in size from major national and international companies upto small service dealers.

AREU Objectives To promote renewable energy sector to invest on the Micro and Macro

investment government projects in Afghanistan, To protect the integrity of renewable energy companies, To improve quality and standards, To build and develop a close cooperation between activists and sharing

of experiences in the field of scientific research survey on the project development,

To work with government agencies on renewable energy projects under renewable energy master plan, tax-exemption and provide facilities for private companies to invest on business opportunities in Afghanistan,

To find international donors to promote renewable energy in Afghanistan, To achieve renewable energy promotions in electricity, heating, cooling,

and other relevant areas in support of increased use of renewable energies throughout the country,

exporting energy,

To improve people’s lives in terms of health, nutrition, education, agriculture, etc. through promoting renewable energy technologies in Afghanistan,

To link the renewable energy sector enterprises to financial institution for the rural and urban economic growth and job creation by the investing in the friendly environment generating electricity.

AREU Business Plan ( 2016) AREU will continue its classical method of road-show based on

its previous planning in the major cities of Afghanistan, by introducing the following contents:

Renewable Energy market & Products Opportunities & Startup companies Participant will fill a survey at the end of the event

To promote and enhance the use of renewable energy in Afghanistan, AREU will hold a renewable energy idea competition between individuals and groups.

AREU will use Afghan local newspapers to create a widely infocomercial articles about month of #CleanAFghanistan campaign.

AREU Business Plan ( 2016) AREU will design a national networking event for registered

members, industry experts, entrepreneurs, investors, and other business people to achieve the following:

AREU will hold its first Annual online faire event, Online fairs and networking events can be great opportunities to meet potential employers and professional peers for AREU members, without leaving the comfort of their desk

AREU will select companies that are involved in eco-friendly activities and based on a transparent competition and analyze, will choose the best eco-friendly firm of the year.

agencies to promote Renewable Energy Sector in Afghanistan:

US Department of Energy The International Renewable Energy Agency ( IRENA ) The Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization (IREO) Ministry of Energy and Water Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development Ministry of Public Works Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. Delegation of the European Union to Afghanistan Environment and Energy- UNDP “Projects in Afghanistan”

Key Achievements Improved awareness, skills, and knowledge of general administrative

and managerial matters,

Undertook specific technical tasks related to urban, rural and industrial electrification through renewable energies for all relevant agencies and sectors,

Improved awareness of sustainable electrification and renewable energies among government entities and improved public awareness in the society,

Working to create a positive competitive, learning, and workplace environment for all active companies in the renewable energy sector,

Key Achievements Continues….. AREU and Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW), in collaboration with the Indian

Embassy in Kabul, held the first and second “Access to Finance - Renewable Energy Summit” in Kabul and Kandahar provinces on June 13-14 and July 7, 2015. These events were designed to help Afghan businesses replicate the best renewable energy solutions from the region and establish linkages with local financial institutions. The Summits were attended by more than 1,000 participants.

Key Achievements Continue….. AREU and MEW organized the Afghanistan-India Renewable Energy Summit in

New Delhi, India during August 6-7, 2015. The event was designed to accelerate renewable energy deployment in Afghanistan, help Afghan businesses replicate the best regional renewable energy solutions, and establish links with financial institutions and international partners. More than 150 Indian renewable energy businesses attended the event. 34 Afghan enterprises and financial institutions also attended. This event generated potential deals of more than $81 million.

AFGHANISTAN – INDIA RENEWABLE ENERGY SUMMIT

Future Plan of AREU AREU planed a one-day “Access to Finance” Road Show program in all

major cities of Afghanistan. Road shows are awareness campaign for the Renewable Energy sector to develop the local capacity of Renewable Energy Business and giving the instruction coordination of the Renewable Energy Sector Players in Afghanistan,

The Road Show will specifically target the Renewable Energy sector functioning in Afghanistan by facilitating access to finance through linking them with potential Indian companies for technical support and purchase of Renewable Energy products. The Road Show aimed at motivating the renewable energy enterprises to take the AREU membership,

AREU membership helps enterprises identify challenges and opportunities in the renewable energy sector and allows them improve their productivity and services.

Objective of the Road Show To support AREU in accessing to finance for the renewable

sector through targeted discussions and meetings between relevant stakeholders,

To link renewable energy enterprises with the financial institutions and popular Indian companies those are active in the hydro, solar, wind, and biomass/biogas,

To create new jobs by encouraging the enterprises to invest in the renewable energy sector,

 To help the AREU increase their memberships.

100 Megawatt ProjectAREU’s suggestion for 100 Megawatt project being newly announced by Ministry of Energy and Water:

Providing facilitation for Afghan Companies to implement up to 1 Megawatt projects.

National Procurement Authority (NPA) of Afghanistan to include Afghan companies as a Joint Ventures for the International companies bidding in bigger projects of Renewable Energy as a term or condition for implementing these projects
