NEWSLETTER 2/3 September 2017
TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME/A READINS: Jeremiah 20:7-9; Romans 12:1-2
GOSPEL: Matthew 16:21-27
Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.
Ten Principles of Catholic Social Teaching
1. The Principle of Respect for Human Dignity
2. The Principle of Respect for Human Life
3. The Principle of Association
4. The Principle of Participation
5. The Principle of Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
6. The Principle of Solidarity
7. The Principle of Stewardship: We show respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. We have a responsibility to care for the world’s goods as stewards and trustees, not primarily, let alone merely, as consumers. The Queensland Catholic Bishops issued a Pastoral Letter on the Great Barrier Reef in June 2004. They wrote: “We are all in the process of learning how to better safeguard creation, respect the rhythms of nature and live more sustainably.
8. The Principle of Subsidiarity
9. The Principle of Human Equality
10. The Principle of Common Good
As Catholics, we have a rich heritage of faith, tradition, and social teaching to draw upon as we seek to live the Gospel faithfully in our own time and situation.
As a community of faith, we seek to protect the dignity of every person and promote the common good of the human family, particularly the most vulnerable among us.
The Church champions the rights of the unborn, seeks to bring dignity to the poor, works to overcome the scourge of racism, and welcomes the stranger among us.
In parishes, diocese and other Catholic organizations, we encourage efforts to bring about discussion on issues affecting the environment (climate change, consumption, pollution, stewardship of the land) that is civil and constructive, that invokes the virtue of prudence in seeking solutions, and that is more responsive to the needs of the poor, both here and abroad.
As Catholics, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to make a difference in
addressing the impacts these issues present, particularly on those least able to endure the burdens. [Please take a copy of Rev Dr John Chalmers’ teachings home
with you. Available at our parish churches]
Creation Prayer
Jesus Christ, teach us to empathise with Earth. Make our spirits sensitive
to the cries of creation, cries for justice from the hills and the trees.
Jesus Christ, make our faith sensitive to the groans of the Spirit,
groans from the deserts, the salt plains, the winds. Jesus Christ, make our souls sensitive to the songs of
our kin, songs of celebration from the sea,
the land and the air. Christ, teach us to care. Amen.
2
Season of Creation
Pope Francis: “At the basis of everything is the Word of God, which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply”
We will celebrate the Season of Creation throughout our Li turgies during September. This week, please take home the 10 Principles of Social Justice enhanced by Rev Dr John Chalmers. It is said that Catholic Social teaching is the Church’s best kept secret. Let’s all become aware of our Baptism call.
THANKS A MILLION!!!
Your generosity to the Romero Appeal organized by our Social Justice Group was phenomenal. Thank you so very much. We have delivered a huge amount of food supplies, baby needs, toiletries, cash, ($240) to the Centre at Dutton Park and they are amazed at your generosity and most appreciative. Thank you. Beth McDonnell, Coordinator, Social Justice
Team.
