Ms. Paul's Biology ClassBack to School Night

Why Study Biology?

You are a biological being.

What we learn about in this class is actually happening inside your body or it involves you as an individual member of the environment around you

You affect the world around you. The world around you affects you.

Topics we will cover

• Cell Biology- The Matter of Life• Molecular Biology- Structure and function• Genetics- Who are you?• Plant physiology- Why are plants cool?• Ecology and Evolution - How did we get here?

Using Technology in the Classroom

Throughout the year, students will be given opportunities to increase their technology skills within the class.

• Statistical analysis using SPSS in order to better interpret their experimental data.

• Following Ms. Paul's website to keep up with class notes and homework assignments, as well as participate in online discussion forum.

• Use technology to find information on various topics that are relevant to our society/environment today.

Sample Project

Students will be given a "hot topic" in biology.

• Stem Cell Research• Cloning• Invasive Species• Human Effect on Environment• Genetic Engineering

Sample Project Continued

For critical thinking, problem solving, and decision makingUsing technology standard CPI# 8.1.1.12.F.1 - Select and use specialized databases for advanced research to solve real-world problems.

Students will use online databases available to research their individual topic. They will then create a website on their topic to present their findings. They will take a stand on their topic citing their references as support for their argument, and give examples on how their stand will benefit our society or environment.Students will hand in a research paper to accompany their website.

Project continued

Students will be graded on this project by the following

• Research paper clearly states their conclusions with clear examples from resources. These resources should be accessed through special databases.

• Website should be clear and user friendly. Opinion should be presented with references, however does not need to be as formal as research paper. Graphics, discussion forums, videos, etc. can be used. Be creative!
