Up to 25:1 compression can be achieved 1 megabyte file can be compressed to 40 K

without a perceptible change to the photo

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format 256 colors

Clipart type files, with need for fewer colors Can save with fewer colors to save space

Lossless compression Provides a way to store multiple images for

animated GIF’s Owned by Compuserve, so there are fees

involved

PNG (pronounced PING)

Portable Network Graphics Lossless compression, generally slightly

better than GIF Supports up to 48 bit color A good choice for graphics such as text

labels, but JPEG is still better for photos
