• was originally compiled by the orders of King Alfred the Great in AD 890

• consists of 9 manuscripts

• last update was written in 1154

• Penultimate Anglo-Saxon king of England

• Normandy

• Nickname “Confessor”

• Had no children

• Construction of a new cathedral

• Was canonized in 1161 by Pope Alexander III
