began in 1990. The best materials are used in the manufacturing of
the vacuum interrupters, which can satisfy electrical and mechanical
requirementsatthesametime.
A further and important step in the development of innovative vacuum
interrupters is the brazing process developed by HYUNDAI for the
permanentsealingofthevacuumchamberinthemechanically
stablebondingofthemetallicandceramicpartsoroxygen
freecopperandcontacttips.

High Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity
HYUNDAIvacuuminterruptersrealizehighshort-circuitbreakingcapacityatcompactsizebyapplingtwogeometricallydifferentcontactsaccordingtospecification.Radialmagneticfieldcontactflowhighercurrentthroughaconstrictedarc,andaxialmagneticfieldallowsadiffusearcevenwherethecurrentintensityishigh.BoththeradialandaxialmagneticfieldsareproducedbyspecialcurrentpathsprovidedinthecontactsunderthesurfaceasshowninFig.4andFig.5.
Low Chopping Current
Belowacertainminimumcurrent,themetalvapourarcisinterruptedpriortothenaturalcurrentzero.Whenthecurrentisinterruptedbychoppingphenomenon,theovervoltageshallappearjustbeforethenaturalcurrentzeropointasshowninFig.1.Thereforethischoppingcurrentmustbeaslowaspossibleinordertopreventthebuild-upofimpermissiblyhighovervoltage.
Themagnitudeofchoppingcurrentdependslargelyonthecontactmaterialused.TheCrCucontactmaterialkeepsthechoppingcurrentbelow5A.

High Dielectric Strength
Onopeningofthecontact,thecurrenttobeinterruptedproducesametalvapourarcdischargeandcontinuesflowingthroughtheplasmauntilthenextcurrentiszero.Thearcisextinguishedinthevicinityofthecurrentzero,andthemetalvapourlosesitsconductivitywithinafewmicroseconds.Thedielectricstrengthofthebreakisthusre-establishedveryquickly.
Thesteadystateofpressureinavacuuminterrupterislessthan1x10-7mbar.Contactclearancesof2mmto20mmsufficeandthereforeproducesahighdielectricstrengthasshowninFig.3.
Minimal Contact Erosion
Themetalvapourplasmaofthevacuumarcishighlyconductive.Thearcvoltageandtheenergyconversioninthebreakarelikewiseminimal.Thehighconductivity,inconjunctionwiththeminimalenergyconversionandshortarcingtimesarethereasonsfortheminimalcontacterosionandlongelectricalservicelifeofourvacuuminterrupters.

Internal Pressure Testing
Completingthewholeprocess,eachvacuuminterrupterissubjecttoitsairtightnesstodeterminetheservicelifeexpectancy.Aspecialinternalpressuremeasuringprocesshasbeendevelopedtotestforleakageevenaftertheinterrupterhasbeensealed.
Inastationaryfacility,electricalandmagneticfieldaresuperimposedinasuchwaythatfreeelectronsionizeanyresidualgasmoleculesandproduceameasuringcurrentthatvariesasafunctionofthepressure.Allinterruptersarestoredinargonandthentestedbymeansofthisprocess.Theyarereleasedforshipmentonlyifaleakagerateofupto1x10-13mbarxℓ/sisnotexceeded.
Thisamountstoastoragetimeof20yearswithoutanylossinquality.Thefollowingfigureshowstheprincipleofinnerpressuremeasuringforvacuuminterrupters.
