Level 1 (Radiance) Validation-1Level 1 (Radiance) Validation-1

• Radiative transfer calculations to compare radiances

• Compute radiance from satellite profiles correcting for lighting conditions– Successfully employed SBUV/2 for GOME

(Hilsenrath, et al., 1996)– Three operational SBUV/2s in orbit– Similar to R. van der A (2001) for GOME– Will include Ring effect– Most applicable to profile channels

• Results– Limited SCIAMACHY Level 1b data

available

Level 1 (Radiance) Validation-2Level 1 (Radiance) Validation-2

• Ground based validation of “radiances”, 300-400 nm

– Radiative transfer models show direct comparisons can be made irrespective of ozone and aerosol columns

– TOMS, SBUV/2, GOME, SCIAMACHY can be validated independent of algorithm.

– System undergoing test at GSFC using SSBUV instrument

• Results– No Level 1b data available over GSFC

Space Shuttle (SOLSE) comparisonSpace Shuttle (SOLSE) comparison

• SOLSE Space Shuttle payload

– Test limb scattering technique

– Entire limb imaged on detector

– SOLSE-1 in 1997 gave limited data but good results

– SOLSE algorithm employed by SCIAMACHY and OSIRIS

• Results (SOLSE-2)

– Mission delayed to Jan 2003

Mauna Loa Intercomparison CampaignMauna Loa Intercomparison Campaign

• NDSC sponsored campaign :– Ozone sondes– Microwave sounder– Three lidars– August 5-21, 2002

• Results– No profiles from SCIAMACY– No profiles from MIPAS– Limited profiles from GOMOS (ACRI)

Total Ozone Column IntercomparisonTotal Ozone Column Intercomparison

• GSFC/Brewer comparisons– GSFC maintains highly calibrated

double Brewer for research and TOMS validation

– Aerosol and trace gas measurements

– Difference with TOMS is 3% rms

• Results– Very limited overpasses over GSFC

– Large biases observed
