When the van is speeding up, the average velocity vectors and the average acceleration vector point in the same direction (+). When the van is travelling at a constant speed, the average acceleration is zero.

When the van is slowing down, the average velocity vectors (+) and the 

average acceleration vector (−) are in opposite directions
