MARCUZZI RESEARCH NOTES Trieste (Trieste)
Ronchi dei Legionari (Gorizia)
RESEARCH NOTES:
For many Italians, heritage has more to do with culture than borders. Indeed, some ancestral towns did
not fall within Italy’s own boundaries when family lines first emerged. Such is the case with Trieste — a
colorful seaport town with a history all its own, nestled in a corner of the Adriatic Sea.
Before the Roman Empire, Trieste was known as Tergeste, crudely translating as “marketplace.” Over
the last two thousand years, the city has held an important place as a center of trade and shipbuilding
throughout the eras of the Byzantine and Hapsburg Empires.

At the turn of the 20th century, Trieste ranked as the fourth largest city in the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. Only a bit more than half the population spoke Italian primarily. Europeans from all over
visited and relocated to Trieste, with Viennese cafés and neoclassical architecture creating a unique
cosmopolitan vibe.
Sigmund Freud made Trieste his vacation home. James Joyce removed himself from tumultuous
Ireland to the seaside oasis of Trieste, and it was here where he began his masterpiece Ulysses.
Shortly after World War I, Italy would annex Trieste while acquiring Slovenian lands. Unlike other
annexed lands in the area, most citizens of Trieste had developed a distinctly Italian identity.

During these swirling and evolving times, we meet the Marcuzzi family of via Lavatoio, 5.
On July 8, 1903, Leopoldo Marcuzzi and Emilia Soletti had their fourth child — a fourth daughter —
named Bianca Irene Marcuzzi.
Entrance to the Ancestral house located in Via (del) Lavatoio, 5
At the church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, Bianca was baptized on July 30, 1903. Her parents named
her maternal aunt, Irene Soletti, as godmother. In honor of this unmarried relative, Bianca inherited her
aunt’s first name as her own middle name.

Church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, Trieste
Her mother, Emilia Teresa Giovanna Soletti, was born to two Trieste natives on March 15, 1861.
Emilia’s father, Giacomo, was a negoziatore or merchant. Her mother, Apollonia Rozza, was a
housewife or casalinga.
Her father, Leopoldo Marcuzzi, was an agente di commercio or sales agent. Born on June 19, 1858,
Leopoldo was the son of a cappellaio or milliner (hatmaker) named Mattia, a landowner from Ronchi
dei Legionari. Leopoldo’s mother, Luigia Cosolo, hailed from Ronchi.
Emilia’s father met Leopoldo through business and introduced the two — they would marry on
February 7, 1891, in Trieste.
A boy who was born tenth out of twelve children to a family in the province of Gorizia, Leopoldo had
now settled in Trieste. He and Emilia were ready to start a family, some thirty miles south of his
family’s hometown of Ronchi.

Ronchi dei Legionari had changed hands of various governments over the years, but always maintained
a majority Italian population and cultural identity. Part of the Republic of Venice for 300 years, Ronchi
fell under French domination from 1797 to 1815. From then until 1918, Ronchi was part of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Ronchi’s fierce Italian background played a pivotal role in one of the more memorable moments of
Italian history after World War I. When the poet-warrior Gabriele D’Annunzio assembled a militia to
protect the city of Fiume from being taken by Yugoslavia, the members were largely comprised of
Ronchi men. The soldiers in this “Impresa di Fiume” were called the Legionari—immortalized in the
name Ronchi dei Legionari.
The registers of the parish church (also known as parrocchiale) of San Lorenzo in Ronchi only date
back from 1865, but the church itself dates to 1780. Unfortunately, older books were destroyed in a
fire. We have information from 1834 onward, however, found in the second copies of those registers in
the Diocese Archive of Gorizia.

Church of San Lorenzo in Ronchi dei Legionari
Mattia Marcuzzi, father of Leopoldo, was born circa 1816. Mattia’s parents were Giovanni Battista
Marcuzzi and Pasqua Cidulin — often spelled Zidulin due to varying dialectal forms of the time.
Leopoldo’s mother, Luigia Cosolo, was born to parents Antonio and Domenica Corgnalli. Luigia
grew up in Fogliano di Ronchi.
We often must look beyond paperwork in the search for family history. The church fire likely destroyed
many critical records, but we can find clues elsewhere by exploring the town itself. In the Ronchi
cemetery, our researchers noticed only a few gravestones for the Marcuzzi family. Had the family lived
in Ronchi for much time, surely more family members would be buried there.
In the nearby province of Udine, records indicate far more Marcuzzi family members. Mattia likely
moved to Ronchi in order to marry his wife, Luigia Cosolo, whose family was originally from Fogliano
— a hamlet of Ronchi. Confirming this, Mattia’s maternal maiden name of Cidulin can only be found
in the province of Udine, rather than Gorizia. 6 | P a g e

A careful examination of the details helps shine light on the story of the Marcuzzi family. While
baptismal records and other such documents can often fill in the dates and details, we know more
about the lives and occupations of the Marcuzzi ancestors.
Mattia, the milliner, designed and made hats at his store in Ronchi. A landowner, he possibly owned the
store. The godparents to all of Mattia’s children are also listed as landowners, mostly from the nearby
hamlets of Peris di San Canzian d’Isonzo (province of Gorizia) and in Fogliano di Ronchi.
The Marcuzzi, like many families who lived in the border towns along the Adriatic, lived and worked
during some of the most exciting and tumultuous times of the region. Their story is not only the
ancestral tale of modern Marcuzzi family members, but part of the story of a town that became part of
Italy during their lifetime.
