Alice King
Its what teachers have been asking for
Christine
Success for our early readers
Gina
Shared reading!
Mary Tavegia
I am excited for schools to have the opportunity from the very beginning to build in the dual goals of the CCC approach
Joe
Bringing back Shared Reading
Sandra McCartney
so much taught "formally" "informally" and "applied"
Alice B
That we are providing a curriculum that makes sense and is what teachers have been looking for
Marisa Ramirez Stukey
I’m most excited about the small group support. It’s essential!
Janice
Agree, shared reading
Kim Roberts
shared reading!!
Joe
Songs and Poems charting

Support for small group reading!
Wendy Seger
The balance that BAR provides for the youngest readers.
Sandra McCartney
aligned with Foundational Standards
Rachel
Good morning Eveyone!
Christine
Yes Linda!
Christine
Gina does shock us
Gina
I feel like MM and BAR are a perfect match!
Gina
So well said, Linda!
Christine
MM - overarching piece:)
Melissa Tovaas
I like that view, Linda. Thank you!
Kristy
Agree - easy to understand that explanation.
Joe
Sharon’s graphic for this idea is very helpful!
Sandra McCartney
it is about the stages of reading development
Rachel
I feel like BAR is that necessary bridge to transition our SIPPS districts into the whole literacy block and not just intervention &/or direct instruction
Sandra McCartney
stages not ages
Gina
Right, Rachel! Authentic literacy block based on the hard work they have done w developing fluent readers
Marisa Ramirez Stukey
Yes! So important to see the complex interactions between what we’ve taught as discrete pieces
Christine
MM gives everyone access to the deeper thinking and talk around a common text - supports all of the other literacy happening throughout the day
Rachel
I'm not seeing any chat.
Alice B
It's true that we need the thread- but it will take a lot of shifting in the school, district and teacher's minds about not just chunking time. People will want a pacing plan to see what the optimum placement of each piece will be in the day
Rachel
is my chat showing up?
me
Yes
Joe
I agree, Alice. That’s why I’m so glad to see the suggested schedules in the preview book!
Gina
Yes, Rachel!
Alice B
thanks :)
Rachel
:)
Wendy Seger
I think of the difference between content and process. We vary the content throughout each of our programs, but we've found a way to make the processes connect from one to another. That brings a great deal of consistency to the learning experience for the child.
Wendy Seger
BAR introduces many of those processes at the very early age again.
Mary Tavegia
I love that about these programs, Wendy.
Wendy Seger
Right?!
Gina
Right, Wendy and is strategically designed lessons!
Valerie
We have seen teachers using the shared reading piece as their ELD.
Christine
Thank you Valerie!
Sandra McCartney
it's not about how to make it" fit' but how we provide the most powerful supports for each child at each stage of their literacy journey
Gina
Such a huge point! Conferences are so important!
Gina
Reading & writing is for choice. So they may continue what they have been doing.
Christine
We also suggest having that “5th day” in MM as an additional IDR time to allow for additional conferring time
Christine
Easy way to add one student conference each day
Linda
Conferring is essential!!
Christine
We also suggest having IDR first thing in the morning so that we begin each day with a few conferences
Rachel
BAR is a beautiful bridge to open up conversation with my SIPPS districts and talk about whats happening in the literacy block. It's the perfect blend to bridge DI with Wshop and help them see the whole picture
Gina
And SIPPS for 60min
Christine
Linda - I love this activity - shows them that they have to make decisions about what stays and what might go
Joe
IDR in the morning would be so much more powerful than what most do as “morning work”!
Christine
I agree Joe!
Valerie
Being a Reader is intentionally designed for this purpose, because we recognize the differences in time available on different days and different situations.
Wendy Seger
How poignant that some of the teaching teams we've worked with this year have needed to revisit the idea of curiosity and genuine interest in learning with intermediate age students. IDR at this early level is about encouraging curiosity. It's almost like learning how to pretend and imagine.
Linda
So true, Wendy.
Christine
Love that Wendy
Linda
All you have to do is watch a 2-year-old with a book.
Christine
There is a strange noise - can everyone mute
Sandra McCartney
teachers advocate and evaluate - they may follow one of our programs more intensively but may have the sense of balance around their instruction and reflect on their instruction and practice
Katy Cortelyou
Folks in my Iowa session were thrilled to see the types of instruction in GS but in a connected way across the various components
Gina
Right, Katy!
Gina
So true, Linda!
Joe
Reading to a Partner is a wonderful way to extend reading time for early readers!
Gina
Marisa, you are going to over the moon!!!
Alice B
I'll need some help to see how to position BAR with my schools who may be doing whole class SIPPS rather than using it for intervention
Gina
We can help with that Alice because we modeled it after the standards which call to differentiate. We can help position that for you.
Sandra McCartney
built in differentiation
Alice B
Thanks
Gina
I have been thinking about automaticity, accuracy and fluency. The students may master the foundational skills but fluency may not be evident
Rachel
Alice, I have a district doing the same. Year 3 and they've now started teaching in 2 groups. Progress...? time is their issue and so BAR is a conversation to be had for them as well.
Alice B
yup!
Melissa Tovaas
Alice, when you say ‘whole class’ what do you mean? Are they teaching whole group SIPPS, or do you mean with all students, but still in small groups, differentiated? If the latter, I would say BAR is going to provide them with so many supports around intentional independent work and structures for setting it up, while the teacher is teaching small groups.
Gina
I agree, Rachel. I think the whole class component is the conversation you could have now. I think SIPPS + Shared Reading is brilliant.
Melissa Tovaas
Is it true that small group lessons in Being a Reader are a little shorter than SIPPS lessons?
Alice B
You know my people... some of them are just doing the whole class from lesson 1 "so noone falls through the cracks"- Not many of them- but I do have those schools.
Valerie
Yes, the small group lessons are designed to take 15 or 20 minutes.
Melissa Tovaas
Right Alice, so BAR will help support them with the move to differentiation
Rachel
This may be off topic; will BAR being a piece mentioned during SIPPS training? Maybe at the framework slide so that those districts who begin to use SIPPS as whole class understand, BAR is a better option?
Valerie
With SIPPS we do not know what else is happening in the classroom. But with BR, we know all the supportive instruction in the rest of the LA block.
Valerie
So because all the pieces work together, we felt we did not need quite as much time during the small group instruction.
Rachel
right. It's because they saw it working for RTI, they started to use it across the board, whole class and not differentiating.
Rachel
Thats def what i see; SIPPS and BAR
Katy Cortelyou
So glad to hear you say this, Gina! Agree!
Rachel
foresee, I mean
Wendy Seger
It could be that a conversation about the whole literacy experience for the child will be important. After Iowa, I'm thinking about how to move conversations from specific constructs (like Daily Five, Words Their Way, etc.) to where those best practices can be found throughout the components of BAR and our other materials--the Suite.
Marisa Ramirez Stukey
Totally agree, Gina! That’s what RTI is really about…how students respond to the intervention and how powerful core instruction is in relation to the students’ needs
Gina
Marisa, might you want to share more? The line is not muted.
Rachel
Right, we can get those triangles turned back around
Rachel
lots of upside down triangles b/c there wasn't mastery of those foundational skills and a good program being used
Gina
What do the kids need!! What a powerful way to start the conversation.
Sandra McCartney
very good
Gina
Right!
Marisa Ramirez Stukey
Agreed!
Rachel
Amen!
Melissa Tovaas
I haven’t looked closely at the ‘routines’ in BAR alongside SIPPS routines. How might they compare? Should we still use term ‘routines’ when talking about BAR small group work?
Rachel
great question!
Valerie
No, we do not use the word "routines". The information is there, but the teacher uses her/his own language to introduce the material.
Valerie
At the same time, the basic philosophy is the same.
Melissa Tovaas
Thanks!
Rachel
will there be built in QR codes to see what it looks like?
Gina
YES! The lessons in the sample lessons sections talk about the embedded supports.
Valerie
We don't currently have any video, but we will have this on the website.
Rachel
lol...good point
Wendy Seger
Yes, Valerie. You've created BAR so developmentally designed for the needs of the young learner that it should reduce the number of students that may need intervention.
Christine
LOL
Gina
Wendy, I am thrilled about that! That is why I fell for SIPPS and now we have another quality resource to stop the over identification problem.
Katy Cortelyou
so very true, Linda
Gina
Right, Christine!
Gina
We cannot make those decisions for them. We can provide guidance
Rachel
Yes! Needs to be a fit. Sometimes its about planting the seed too. The ol' saying: the teacher arrives when the student is ready.
Viewer 34
Yes, Christine, the district and the building administrator really have to understand that schedules are going to change as students develop skills, independence and so forth.
Rachel
We can't want it more than them
Melissa Tovaas
So true, Christine! That’s a big conversation when districts have so much else going on and giving mixed messages about practices to teachers
Gina
And they love to keep what they love!
Rachel
and sometimes what the district is asking and the message they are sending are different!
Christine
yes Rachel
Ginger Cook@me
will you please send the chat to me once you capture it? Want to reread it...
me@Ginger Cook
Of course!
Melissa Tovaas
I think I know what district, Rachel :)
Ginger Cook@me
appreciate it!
Melissa Tovaas
Thanks Gina! Very helpful!
Gina
Melissa, I’ll send you the draft. Its just about done.
Melissa Tovaas
Awesome!
Ginger Cook
me too, please : )
Gina
This flow is the same flow we are moving into for SIPPS also.
Gina
It will be done Tuesday (FYI)
Gina
Great news, Tracy had great patience and was able to get the link from last week’s webinar! Thank you, Tracy!
me
You are welcome! :)
Alice B
When you say virtual- are you talking about a video where they can see a whole lesson in action?
Rachel
I sure glad this will be archived. I need to re listen. Lots of good info. thank you
Melissa Tovaas
Where does modified lesson study format fit in, or can that be at any stage after the overview?
Alice B
I think videos of how the lessons look would be great too.
Gina
Follow-up, Melissa
Melissa Tovaas
got it, thanks Gina
Gina
We didn’t list all the possibilities
Gina
Mod. LS will be a follow-up
Alice B
Thanks!
Rachel
It's a hard conversation to have when its not actually out BUT I need to reposition how I phrase it being that we DO have support to get them started and tie over
me@Gina
I'll capture the chat.
Valerie
I can stay.
Christine
I can stay too
Alice King
thank you all, such wonderful help!
Sandra McCartney
I have teachers that are very interested in learning more - can we offer a timeline of informational BAR opportunities
Melissa Tovaas
For CA, what might be best solution for TK in terms of BAR?
Sandra McCartney
thank you!
Christine
Have a great weekend
Ginger Cook
Thank you!
Katy Cortelyou
Have a great weekend!
Gina
Melissa, like SIPPS it is the 21 letter names
Gina
Fall public webinars
Gina
That will be our start
Gina
I am finalizing the pre-sale/overview with Valerie next week
Ginger Cook
we also have the archived webinar that they could see?
Melissa Tovaas
But what about Shared Reading aspect? They could use it with TK, but maybe redundant if they would also use for K the next year.
Ginger Cook
/view?
Joe
Once we have implementations, seeing it in action would be wonderful for our own learning!
Valerie
We are thinking about TK now. Letter names are important. They could use K shared reading, as you say Melissa.
Gina
right, joe!
Gina
we will all be learning
Christine
Love it Linda
Marisa Ramirez Stukey
So exciting!
Melissa Tovaas
Thanks Valerie. Keep me posted… it’s coming up and districts view TK-K as a continuum.
Joe
Great to hear your voice today, Valerie!
Sandra McCartney
perfect thank you!!!
Christine
Awesome Linda!!
Melissa Tovaas
Some districts do have TK-K combo classes, so definitely the Shared Reading Gr. K would work well
Joe
Can’t wait to see it, Linda!!
Ginger Cook
so in terms of scheduling with Sam, we can start planning on those by Oct/Nov?
Sandra McCartney
I did download the ppt and saw all of the updates very good thanks for building in differentiation in our approach
Kim Roberts
thank u all!!
Sandra McCartney
thank you
Melissa Tovaas
Thank you so much!!!! So helpful
me
Have a great weekend!
Joe
Thank you, Gina and Linda!
