Key Virtualization Features
Thin Provisioning Satisfy provisioning requests but allocate storage only when data is written
Improve capacity utilization across the infrastructure
Value: Purchase only the storage you need when you need it
IBM Easy Tier SSD Management Busiest data automatically moved to
highest performing Solid-state Drives
Up to a 3x performance improvement with as little as 5% SSD
Value: Optimized performance at lower overall cost
Real-time Compression Buy and maintain less storage
Compress active data up to 80% without application performance degradation
For example, VMware ~75%, Database ~80%, Exchange ~50%
Value: Store more data with less disk
Hot-spots due to poor data layout. Optimized performance and throughput.

Without thin provisioning, pre-allocated space is reserved whether the application uses it or not
With thin provisioning, applications can grow dynamically, but only consume space they are actually using

Key Management Features
Practice Disaster Recovery Techniques
 Practice application recovery procedures
Detect mirroring failure and automate failover
Value: Train staff and prove business continuity plans work without disrupting applications
Application-Aware Copies Integrated, instant copy for critical applications
Rapidly create clones for application testing
View inventory of application copies and instantly restore
Value: Virtually eliminate application downtime for backup
High Availability Configurations
Network
Synchronous and asynchronous mirroring between sites
Real-time data mobility between sites complements
VMware vMotion and PowerHA Live Partition Mobility
 Integrated management with practice support
 Automated fail-back after repair
 Value: Enable near-continuous data availability

Storage optimization scanarios
Rebalancing (Storage Optimizer)
Re-tiering (Tiered Storage Optimizer)
Provisioning (SAN Planner) User defines volume properties
 User selects allowed target pools
 User provides workload characteristics
⇒ TPC suggest best matching pool
⇒ TPC will create the volume, map it and zone it to the server
? ?
User selects source pools and target pools
⇒ TPC suggest which volumes to move to achieve almost equal utilization in terms of workload
⇒ TPC provides a list of commands for SVC to migrate volumes
 User executes the recommendations manually
 User defines policies
User groups pools into storage tiers (not one tier may have more than one pool)
⇒ TPC suggest which volumes to move to different tier and shows the estimated performance changes
 User executes the recommendations manually
16
Tiered Storage Optimizer
What this is:
• Integration with existing storage optimizer and storage
tiering reporting; policy-driven ILM leveraging
virtualization technology to provide recommendations for
storage re-location
• Developed by IBM Research and has been deployed in IBM
GTS to manage storage assets
Benefit to you:
• Provides recommendations for workload migration
based on user defined policy based on file system
level data, performance and capacity utilization
• Ensures only highest performing workloads are
allocated to most expensive storage
• Enterprise wide datacenter storage tiering solution
complementary to Easy Tier technology

VSC Offering Overview
23
A suite of IBM storage management products that can be ordered as a single PID using a ‘Tiered per Terabyte’ pricing metric
One PID includes:- SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Virtualization
- SAN Volume Controller FlashCopy
- SAN Volume Controller Remote Mirroring (Metro/Global Mirror)
- Tivoli Storage Productivity Center (TPC) with Advanced Analytics
- Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Replication (2-Site)
- Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager (FCM)
Use as many of the products as you like
Pay on a ‘per Terabyte’ basis for data within the SAN Volume Controller storage pools, referred to as Managed Terabytes
NOTE: This does NOT include Real Time Compression
