Message from the OSA Chair
Dear Old Stithians
It has been a manic start to the year, and I am sure you have felt it too.
With the New Year well on the way, a lot is happening at the OSA. From the planning of the Easter Festival
which is well underway (Pg 15), to the details related to our development project being finalised, and
everything in between. Once again we sent a team down to the Cape Town Tens Tournament, and although
they did not win the division, they had a lot of fun in the process and represented us like we knew they
would. I want to thank Christian Ashcroft and the team for all the work they put in and for being our team
again this year.
The Higher Ground continues to be a hive of activity with more and more people visiting us on a weekly
basis. We continue to get great reviews in the press and we are slowly becoming a sought-after venue in
Gauteng. Remember, as a Life Member of the Alumni, you get to use the facility without having to pay
venue hire fees, for the best view in Jo’burg.
My team is continuing their work on upgrading the membership value and we will finally have the
membership cards ready for collection in the next couple of weeks. It has been a journey of trial and error so
far in finding the right solution, but I believe we are there. So look out for the mail detailing the
membership cards and when they can be collected.
With all this going on, we have launched the new OSA website www.oldstithian.org which will at first look
better, but as the year goes on, watch out for additions of some great new services which we will be putting
in place.
I know I have been talking about this for a long time now, but as we grow, we need more and more people
to get involved in one way or another. We have taken on the development adjacent to Higher Ground and
we will need your help in making this vision a reality. Our plan is to build a new Pavilion to service the
Wayne Joubert field as well as the new field, which we will be grassing, irrigating and lighting, to create an
amazing environment for sports, family and relaxation for all. In saying that, no project runs itself, nor does
it pay for itself. We will be looking to raise funds through a number of events this year and will also be
looking for people to help us with project management, supplies, or just time in the development of our
home (Pg 11-12). If you are interested in getting involved or would like more information, please let me
know and we can have a cup of coffee. I know that we will get this done and I know that we will get it done
“One and All”.
I hope to see you at the next OSA draw on 27 February 2014 (Pg 7).
Until we meet at the Higher Ground.
Regards
Shaun Edmeston

Chapel – 1958/59
“This photo was rescued from an old slide that was about to be
thrown away. It was probably taken by my father who did quite
a lot of slide photography in those days. 'Those days' are
probably my first two years at St Stithians (1958-59) because by
my Matric year (1961) the Science Block to the right of the
chapel was already in use, and in my Std 9 year the building
operations were evident. The house of Mr Wally Mears', the
founding Headmaster, is among the trees in the distance on the
right. I was always aware of the Cornish connections of the
school and the Cornish origins of the Founders, but recently
that connection was made even more plain to me. I saw the
crest of Cornwall and it is very similar to the old boys' badge,
with the gold coins grouped in the middle (round the edge of the
school badge). The Cornish motto underneath is, of course,
"One and All".”

Letters of Mr E M (“Monty”) Harris
“Monty” Harris was one of the first four staff members of St Stithians College in
1953. From the first few days of the College until April 1961, shortly before he died
during a holiday visit to his sister Lilian in England, he recorded the early years of the
development of the College in letters to Lilian. Following his death and at the request of
Mr Mears, the first Headmaster of the College, Miss Harris typed up the
extracts about St Stithians that Monty had written in his airmail letters.
These were first issued in 1969 (volume 1: 1953 – 1956) and a second
volume (1957 – 1961) followed. Few extant copies remain. The Archives
copy is a signed copy that formerly belonged to Lindsay Baytopp, the first
groundsman after whom Baytopp field is named.
Here are a few extracts from the letters:
Jan 31st [1953]:
“Yes, St Stithians has been “alive” for four days and it would not be far out to say
that I, too, have been alive for the same period … On Tuesday Mr Mears called for
me at 9.a.m. and we proceeded to the house of Mr Tucker (he is an Accountant and
one of the Council of the College) to pick up one desk and a load of books. From there to Ferndale where we
picked up the two lady members of staff and thence the short journey to the school. The morning was spent in
checking books, etc. and in the afternoon the boarders began to arrive. The boys are not a little proud of the
fact that they will always be known as founder pupils. Wednesday was the great day. We were on the job about
7.20 a.m. ready for the influx of the nippers who do not live in. This is my first experience of classes for the
“fives” and I have never seen so many small boys crying at the same time. …
Feb 28th
:
“And now to the doings of the week which has seen the first purchase of a St S cane and the use thereof. One of
the Standard VII’s [Grade 9’s] so far forgot himself as to play the fool in Afrikaans lessons. I wonder whether
he will go down in history as the first founder student to be caned.”
The College Archives has undertaken, at the request of the Class of ’63 who recently gathered for their 50th
reunion, to produce a limited edition reprint of these delightful items which contain a unique record of the early
years of the school. Mr Baytopp’s copy and its companion volume have been digitised, printed and bound as
replica sets of the originals.
These booklets are being made available to the Saints family, past and present, at R130-00 for the two volume
set. Funds raised from this project will go towards the development of a Living History Museum in which the
history of the College can be displayed and explored in both real and virtual formats.
Should you wish to order a set of these collector’s items please complete the attached order form, deposit the
amount electronically and email the form and payment proof to archives@stithian.com . Should you wish to
pay by cash, please pay at the Bursar’s office and email a scan of the receipt.
