WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose Polymers for Industrial Applications
WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose Polymers are cellulose esters, derived from natural wood or cotton linters. To obtain WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose, a mixture of nitric acid, sulfuric acid and water is applied to a cellulose feedstock. WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose polymers have been produced in Bomlitz, Germany, since 1879. While Bomlitz is one of the oldest DuPont facilities, significant investments made recently have positioned our Bomlitz facility as a world leader in nitrocellulose production and technology.
DUPONT IS THE WORLD LEADER IN CELLULOSIC DERIVATIVES DuPont Nutrition & Health offers a wide range of cellulose derivatives including WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose. Our expertise in cellulosic polymers and their applications make us an excellent partner of choice for many customers in a wide range of industries.
WHAT ARE WALSRODER™ NITROCELLULOSE POLYMERS?
A RANGE OF FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES

Solvent and Component
Compatibility
Film FormingForms transparent films with
excellent mechanical properties that remain hard but flexible.
Exhibits superior binding capabilities which are essential when formulating
printing inks and coatings.
Highly compatible with most organic solvents, pigments and resins;
provides rapid solvent evaporation with low solvent retention.
Naturally derived cellulose ester; odorless and non-toxic, making it a good choice for many industrial
inks and coatings.
Builds viscosity once in solvent solution; enables users to
customize the required viscosity and rheology in application.
WALSRODER™ NITROCELLULOSE APPLICATIONS
WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose products are used in a wide variety of applications. The examples below display only a few of the many possibilities.
Wood Coatings
Other Applications
Leather Coatings
Nail Polish
Blotting Membranes
Printing Inks
Widely used in flexography and gravure printing for flexible
packaging; provides excellent binding capability and compatibility with solvents, resins and pigments.
Used in wood coatings, particularly furniture; forms
transparent, fast-drying films with excellent mechanical and optical
properties; soluble in many organic solvent systems.
Can be used as a binder in coatings for automotive, metal, paper, glass and
other applications.Popular membrane material for transferring electrophoretically separated biomolecules to a solid support; high binding capacity to
proteins; excellent mechanical stability; very low detection background.
Key component of nail polish because of its mechanical resistance
and fast-drying properties.
Used in leather coating and finishing; particular water damped E-grades allow for Nitrocellulose emulsions.
WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose is soluble in many organic solvent systems. The table below shows the solubility and application properties based on the selected grade.
PHLEGMATIZATION ENSURES SAFETYIn order to mitigate flammability risks, WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose is phlegmatized with at least 30% alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol), 35% water or 20% plasticizer (ATBC, ESO or SAIB).
WALSRODER™ NITROCELLULOSE PRODUCT OFFERING DuPont has made significant investments to support our customers and provide Free-Flowing WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose products. These products provide additional safety and increase productivity for our customers.
We continually adapt WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose to our customers’ evolving processes and applications. As a result, DuPont offers three different particle morphologies of WALSRODER™ Nitrocellulose:
• WALSRODER™ NC Standard Grades• WALSRODER™ NC Free-Flowing Grades• WALSRODER™ NC-Chips

WALSRODER™ NC-Chips, a specific form of nitrocellulose, contain a plasticizer as their phlegmatizer.Since they are alcohol free, NC-Chips are used when other Nitrocellulose grades cannot meet certain technical requirements. For example, when only one solvent can be used, NC-Chips are ideally suited for the production of coatings.
