Theownersoftheplant,AndrewandBrendaKemp,arewellknownwithintheredmeatindustryfortheirinnovativeandprogressiveapproachtothelocalarea’sstringentenvironmentalregulations.Thefacilityhasbeentherecipientofmanyindustryawards,themostrecentbeingtheMeat&LivestockAssociation’s2009EnvironmentalandSustainabilityAward.

Plant Operations

Thefacilityincorporatesanabattoirandintegratedrenderingplantwhichusesanimalby-productstoproducemeatmealandanimaltallow.Itcurrentlyprocessesapproximately50beefperweek,80pigsperweekandwholesalelambsasrequired.

Animaltallowproducedintherenderingplantiscurrentlyusedtorunthesite’senergyandheatingsystemsandhasresultedina50%reductioninenergyconsumption.

Recentlegislativechangeshaveplacedgreaterresponsibilityonprocessingfacilitiestoreducetheirenvironmentalimpact.Twoofthemainareasofchangearetheminimisationofemissionsandtheestablishmentofacceptableeffluentstandards.Traditionally,incumbenttreatmentprocessesoftenfailtomeetminimumrequirements.

Inordertocomplywithnewstringentenvironmentalregulationsandtoimproveongoingplantoperations,AndrewandBrendaKempneededtoaddresstwomainissues.

Odor Emissions

Thefirstissuewastoaddressodoremissionsfromtheanaerobic,facultativeandtallowdamswhichhadrisentounacceptablelevels.Historically,controllingodorfromthesetypesofdamshasbeennotoriouslydifficultascommonlyusedtreatmentssuchaslimedosingareoftenaccompaniedbynegativesideeffects.AddinglimetoadamcausespHlevelstorisetoapointwheremicrobialactivityisallbuteliminated.Byeliminatingmicrobialactivity,organicwasteispreventedfrombreakingdown,whichinturnmeansnoodorisproduced.Thenegativesideeffectofthisprocessisthatnaturalmicrobialdecompositionofaccumulatedsludgeisinhibited.

Sludge Build-up

Thesecondissuewastoaddresssludgebuildupandheavycrustingonthetallowdamwhichwasthreateningthevolumeandflowoftreatedeffluentpassingthroughthewastewatertreatmentsystem.Thetraditionalmethodusedtoremoveaccumulatedsludgeismechanicalexcavation.Thisisexpensive,timeintensiveandhasanumberofenvironmentalimplications,suchasemissionsfromheavymachineryanddisposalofthesolidwaste.

BiOWiSH™AquaFOGutilizesahighspeedbiocatalysttorapidlybreakdownorganicwasteandodorcausingcompounds.Itisparticularlyeffectivefortreatingwastewaterthatcontainsahighfat,oilandgreasecontent,suchasthatofKempMeats.

GrahamrecommendedusingBiOWiSH™AquaFOG,asitwouldassistKempMeatsinreducingtotalVolatileOrganicCompounds(odors),accumulatedwastewaterdamsludgeandtotalsuspendedsolids,aswellasBOD(BiologicalOxygenDemand)andexcessNitrogenwithouttheneedtocontinuallyaddlime,orexcavateexcesssludge.

Application

Takingintoaccountthesite’sexistingwastewatertreatmentsetup,GrahamSmythrecommendedestablishingtwodosingsystemsthroughasimplesetupof10.5Gal(40L)drumswhichemptyintothedrains.

Thefirstdosingsystemwasestablishedintherenderingplant,whereBiOWiSH™AquaFOGwasmixedintosolutionandflushedthroughthedrainsonadailybasis.Thedrainsintherenderingplantrunintothetallowdamwheredissolvedfats,oilsandgreasesareseparatedpriortoenteringthewastewatersystem.

Theseconddosingsystemwasestablishedontheabattoir’sprocessingfloor,withBiOWiSH™AquaFOGbeingdischargeddirectlyintodrainoutletsonadailybasis.Drainsontheprocessingfloorflowdirectlyintotheanaerobicdam.
