Function of Wexford Co. Co.Function of Wexford Co. Co.

One of the functions of the Council is to provide potable drinking water.

The Council currently produces over 42 million litres of water a day.

The following map shows the major public water supply schemes in the county.

Water ConservationWater Conservation County Wexford Water Conservation Project

commenced in January 2003.

Purpose of the project, is to promote the more effective utilisation of existing water resources reducing the volume of potable water lost or wasted in the distribution system.

Why Water Conservation?Why Water Conservation?

Saves Council’s money (spent elsewhere) Saves on water bills (customers) Helps environment Increasing population – increasing demand Smaller households – increase demand More water appliances – dishwashers, power

hoses, garden sprinklers. (Possible) Climate change

How?How? Check your plumbing for leaks Install water saving devices in toilet cisterns – can

save 20% of the water you flush away Eliminate automatic urinal flushing by installing

sensor controlled ones Don’t let the tap run unnecessarily Make staff aware of the importance of saving

water and money Read your meter regularly, at least once a month.

Demand Management StudyDemand Management Study

Under the demand management section of the project, Gorey Community School was chosen to introduce water conservation measures.

Identification of Water UsageIdentification of Water UsageA data logger installed on supply meter to

record the volume of water used. Used to assess the consumption profile for the school.

Survey of the school undertaken to find out the number and type of plumbing fixtures and fittings.

Water Conservation MeasuresWater Conservation MeasuresGorey Community School (1,600 pupils)

– Installed push-fit taps, urinal controls and cistern dams (and repaired two small leaks).

– Reduced water usage from 24,000 to 15,000 litres per day (on school day).

SummarySummary

Per student consumption reduction from 15.5 l/student/day to 9.9 l/student/day

Demand Management SummaryDemand Management Summary

Monitor the meter supplying the building and assess the consumption.

Survey all water fittings in the building, this weill highlight where any repairs might be maade.

Install appropriate demand management devices Finally monitor the water consumption on a

continuous basis to ensure its remains consistent
