WHAT IS WAVE MOTION ?????????

Wave motion is the propagation of disturbance from the point of medium to other parts of it.

CHARACTERISTICS OF WAVE MOTION

All types of traveling waves transport energy. Study of a single wave pulse shows that it is

begun with a vibration and is transmitted through internal forces in the medium.

Continuous waves start with vibrations, too. If the vibration is SHM, then the wave will be sinusoidal.

KINDS OF WAVES.

Longitudinal Wave

When a wave propagates through some medium, if the local displacements of the medium that constitute the disturbance are in the direction of travel of the disturbance, then the wave is longitudinal. An example of a longitudinal wave is the pulse that can be sent along a stretched slinky by shaking one end of the slinky along its length.

Transverse Wave

A disturbance that is perpendicular to the direction of travel are called transverse waves. Examples are waves on strings, surface waves on the water, etc.

(A)Longitudinal waves are created in a spring when the free end is moved back and forth parallel to the spring.

(B) Transverse waves are created in a spring when the free end is moved up and down.
