Chemists Celebrate Earth Day
A Historical Perspective
History of Earth Day
• First Earth Day – April 22, 1970
• Creation of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson
– As an environmental teach-in in response to an oil spill
• First year: 20 million people
• Now: 1 billion people in 192 countries

12
ACS Celebration of Earth Day
• Pilot celebration in 2003: “Chemis-TREE”
• First full celebration in 2004:
– “What Do You Know About H2O?”
• Themes have rotated through earth-friendly topics
– Air
– Plants/Soil
– Recycling
– Water
• ACS provides full range of resources for each theme.13
CCED Collaborations
• Because Earth Day is celebrated by so many groups in almost all parts of the country, it is a perfect event for collaboration.
• You can use this as a way to connect with other environmental groups in your area
• Gives environmental dimension to chemistry
• Can connect through the Earth Day Network: www.earthday.org
14
Complement to NCW
• CCED is ACS’s second largest outreach event
• Those groups who already celebrate NCW would be prime partners for CCED
15
Additional ACS Environmental Connections
• New ACS resource specifically on climate science: www.acs.org/climatescience
• ACS Committee on EnvironmentalImprovement
• ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry
16
How many times have you participated in CCED?
• 1 time
• 2-4 times
• 5-8 times
• All 9 times!
• I have not participated so far
17
18
Why do outreach?
Mission –
•To reach the public, particularly elementary and secondary school children, with positive messages about chemistry
•To make a positive change in the public’s impression of chemistry
•To promote a mechanism for effectively mobilizing ACS local sections
•To motivate the ACS membership through local section activities
Our Earth: Handle With Care
• For the 10th anniversary we highlight the four themes: air, plants/soil, recycling, and water
• Activities are centered around understanding and taking care of the Earth and its resources
19
Inside “Celebrating Chemistry”
• Review of the ACS Climate Science Toolkit
• Meg A. Mole interview
• Classroom-friendly activities with built-in safety notes
• Advice on taking care of the Earth at school
• Stories of recycling in San Francisco
• Wordfind
20
Outreach-friendly Activities
• Make indicator paper in advance
• Let kids use Q-tips to draw on the indicator paper
• Compare ripe fruit to unripe fruit
• Have some of the cabbage juice handy to show how it is done
