Wea Ridge Middle School
March 2018
The students at Wea Ridge have made an incredible difference in the lives of oth-
ers in our community and throughout the country this year. We have several Wea
Ridge Middle groups and individuals who have engaged our school community in
a variety of community service projects to help Riley Hospital for children, flood
victims in Houston and more. Engaging in community service provides students
with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a last-
ing, positive impact on society at large. Community service or volunteerism ena-
bles students to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to
those who need it most. These are some of the common benefits of participating
in a community service program:
1. Psychological benefits: Volunteering increases overall life satisfaction and helps you feel good about yourself because you are helping others. It can also help to decreases stress and ease depression.
2. Social benefits: Volunteering engages students with the community, cre-ates special bonds with the population being served, and increases social aware-ness and responsibility.
3. Cognitive benefits: Volunteering helps students enhance their personal knowledge, grow from new experiences, and develop better interpersonal com-munication skills.
Currently our Students In Action club is sponsoring the Wea Here to Serve collec-tion drive to help children in our community, homeless families, and our active mil-itary. It is wonderful to see students take an active role in supporting members of our community near and far as they develop empathy, expand their world view and understand how they can have a positive impact on the lives of others.
Thank you to all the parents who have encouraged their child to participate in this activity and others throughout our school year to help our students develop a rich-er perspective of the world they live in.

This Friday, March 2, will be my last day here for this school year as I am going on maternity leave. It is difficult to leave a school year unfinished, but the students will be in very capable hands as Mrs. Jones,
who retired from Wea last school year, will be returning to finish the rest of the semester. I will miss the students and trust that our 8th graders are ready for this transition that is ahead!
In our previous Coffee with the Counselor session on Feb. 21st, I discussed some of the common issues
regarding social transitions and dynamics in middle school. We also spend some time discussing various resources and tools that are available to help parents trying to stay on top of the technology swing with teens as there are many programs and tools available to help monitor appropriate usage of cell phones
and other devices. Lastly we talked quite a bit on tips to prepare 8th graders for high school. It was a good discussion having feedback from other parents whose children just recently made this transition. A link to the handout that was shared is here Coffee with the Counselor 2-21-2018 Coffee with the Coun-selor provides a valuable way to discuss academic, social/emotional and career development concerns with the school counselor as well as other parents. We are thankful to the Husky Parent Association for
partnering with us and I look forward to continuing this program next school year.
A quick note about scheduling: In April we will look at entering scheduling information for our cur-rent students. Those looking to switch their music elective will be given instructions and an opportunity
to do so through their current music course. We will also be looking at academic needs to determine placements in Learning Labs and study halls. If you have questions about options for your child for next
year, please contact the counseling office.
There is still plenty of time to enroll your student in the Twenty-First Century Scholars program. This is a wonderful program that can help pay for college. Students must enroll in this program by June 30 of
their 7th or 8th grade year. You can find more information and enroll in the program at scholars.in.gov If you need help or additional information, please contact the counseling office.

Students In Action
The Students In Action group has launched their biggest collection drive of the year called Wea Here to
Serve. Students are collecting items to support 3 different organizations within our community in
a fun way, competing to see which grade level can collect the most items. Each grade level is encour-
aged to wear their designated color (6th grade-orange, 7th grade-red, 8th grade-green) on each Thursday
during the week of the drive. Fridays will be themed all school dress days: March 2-Neon day, March 9-
pajamas, March 16-Wea Ridge.
6th graders are collecting the following items which will be made into Happy Sacks and given to children
in the pediatric department of our local hospital: new puzzles, board games, stuffed animals, mini figures,
activity books, and crayons/colored pencils.
7th graders are collecting items that will be taken to Lafayette Transitional Housing Center to benefit the
homeless/sheltered within our community: socks, deodorant, travel-size shampoo, conditioner, bar soaps
or travel-sized body wash, toothbrush and toothpaste.
8th graders are collecting items that will be sent to Support Our Troops to benefit our servicemen and
women who are serving our country overseas: mints/gum, body wash/lotion, etc., beef jerky, small note-
pads or journals, playing cards, pens and chapstick (roll tubes only).
Students may place donations in the collection bins located outside each pod daily. The Collection drive
runs from now until March 16. If anyone wants to make monetary donation to cover costs of shipping or
purchasing supplies you may make checks payable to Wea Ridge Middle School. We appreciate your
support!
