Domain Names

• Must be registered

• godaddy.com

• networksolutions.com

• Registrations expire and must be renewed!

• Registrations are assigned administrative, technical and billing contacts

Domain Names

• Without domain names, URLs would look like this: 192.168.12.164 (IP Address)

• Your registration points to a Domain Name Server (DNS)

• DNS is a service of your web host. It answers to requests to yourDomain.com and points to the correct IP address

Static Web Sites

• A collection of published web pages that does not change

• html + css + javascript + images = “client side” code

• No “back end” programming

• Online brochure

Dynamic Web Sites

• Have some elements which change depending on parameters

• “Back end” programming dynamically generates the “front end” code

Database Driven Web Sites

• Complex web application stores large amounts of information in a database

• E-commerce, portals, social media, etc.

• Most dynamic web sites use a database

Secure E-Commerce• Database driven - products and customer

information are stored in the database

• SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption puts the secure in secure e-commerce

• SSL Certificate granted by a certificate authority verifies the authenticity of your encrypted site

• You will need a merchant account

Content Management Systems

• Edit your own site content without knowing anything about web development

• Many CMS’s are browser based. You can update your website using nothing but your browser

Search Engine Optimization
